Niall Ferguson makes a strong, compelling case for the development of money and banking as a catalyst for the advancement of civilization. Yet while some critics praised his clear, comprehensible writing, punctuated with anecdotes and historical details, others were nonplussed by his explanations and narrative detours. The Financial Subplot

Niall Ferguson has written an easily accessible and very entertaining history of finance, ranging from the clay tokens of Mesopotamia 5,000 years ago to the hedge funds of today. The title of this book has apparently been modelled on Jacob Bronowski's "The Ascent of Man," and like that book it will be made into a television series. Being a television celebrity is not something that wins the admiration of one's peers in the history profession, to say the least. But those little rebukes are relatively mild compared to the scorn he received for his political views in Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power and Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire. In those works he argued that empire was beneficial not only to the mother country but the dominated countries as well. In this work he chronicles not only the history of money but also makes a case for liberalized finance.

Ferguson examines the financial subplot behind some of the major historical powers such as the role of money in ancient Mesopotamia, the denarius in Roman society, and gold and silver in the civilization of the Incas. He is very good in his descriptions of financial families like the Medicis and the Rothchilds, and how they became banking dynasties. Another memorable episode was the rise of Amsterdam as the world's financial center and the center's subsequent shift to London.

History is also filled with financial disasters of which we are well aware today. Ferguson tells the story of John Law and how he became France's head of finance. He engineered a financial bubble that took them several generations to overcome. Making matters worse, it occurred at the same time as the British South Sea Bubble.

Also instructive is the history of the first great globalization (1870-1914). (For this period also read Jeffrey Frieden's Global Capitalism: Its Fall and Rise in the Twentieth Century.) The world had become so economically interdependent that the pundits believed the possibility of war between great powers had been eliminated. This sentiment was famously expressed in "The Great Illusion" by Norman Angell.

Although this book was written before the current economic crisis, the last chapter is very prescient. "From Empire to Chimerica" tells of the symbiotic relationship between China and America. The combined country "accounts for just over a 10th of the world's land surface, a quarter of its population, and a third of its economic output, and more than half of the global economic growth of the last eight years". This relationship, in which China saves and America spends, and in which China's savings is used to enable America to spend even more, is clearly unsustainable. Ferguson sees this savings glut as the cause of the current subprime crisis. That, in my humble opinion, was one of the causes; there were many bad actors involved in this catastrophe, citizen-borrowers included.

Although it is not obvious to everyone in the midst of a crisis, Ferguson correctly points out that financial engineering is one of the great forces behind human progress. The history of finance is a process of creative destruction. Financial risk-taking is necessary for economic expansion and human development, and Ferguson does a good job in making the case. Too bad it reads like a script made for the History Channel.

Descriptive but not Prescriptive

Niall Ferguson's THE ASCENT OF MONEY, as its subtitle promises, is a broad overview of financial history, from the dawn of the first form of currency in Ancient Mesopotamia to the proliferation of complex residential asset-backed securities early in the twenty-first century. In six chapters, Ferguson traces the genesis and evolution of the pillars of modern finance: currency, bonds, corporate stock, insurance, and real estate. A final chapter focuses on the US and China's symbiotic debtor-creditor relationship, and an afterword discusses the current global recession and includes a somewhat strained evolutionary analogy comparing financial development to natural selection.

The objective here is to illuminate the modern economic system by surveying its historical origins, and to a large extent, Ferguson succeeds. The book is targeted to a lay audience and such readers are certain to walk away from a reading with an enhanced understanding of modern economics. The author generally takes the time to explain even elementary concepts in an effective manner, but there are also several maddening instances throughout where he casually references somewhat arcane metrics and complex ideas (e.g., VaR) without any explanation as to their meaning and significance. In this respect, Ferguson can be at times simultaneously too basic for the advanced reader and too complex for the novice.

Never dry reading, the narrative flows freely over its 358 pages, with perhaps the most interesting and edifying chapters being those on the bond, equity, and real estate markets. I especially enjoyed Ferguson's exploration of the five stages of "bubble" (displacement, euphoria, mania, distress, and revulsion).

Ultimately, though, the book will be of most benefit to those with a casual interest in economics, as it is entirely descriptive and not prescriptive. Ferguson never really offers anything resembling a thesis, nor does he reveal his own views except for the most fleeting of moments when singing the virtues of late-19th/early-20th century imperialism. He is focused exclusively on reporting, not analyzing. As such, THE ASCENT OF MONEY, though well-written, does not transcend its status as a historical chronicle and will be of trivial value to those seeking a sophisticated economic treatise.

Readable and engaging

Historian Niall Ferguson teaches economic history at Harvard so he certainly has credentials for a book like this. While his historical knowledge is impressive his financial claims can seem a bit cavalier and broad-sweeping.

Ferguson celebrates financiers as the source of modern wealth and prosperity. He backs up his claim by a historical examination of the last 500 years. This includes the Italians in the late Middle Ages, as well as the Dutch in the 17th century and Britain's empire success which he partially attributes to the establishment of the Bank of England in 1694.

After setting the historical context Ferguson becomes a pundit on the current global situation. Commenting on those who speculate in the financial markets today Ferguson writes, "When people have a run of luck, they very quickly impute this to their own brilliance. Once you start interpreting your good fortune as your skill, you're very quickly a master of the universe who can never fall. That, of course, is precisely when you fall." He likens financiers to gamblers, which may not be a completely fair connection. Of course there is risk involved in investing, but the primary concern in the financial world is how to limit that risk, react wisely, and be patient.

As Ferguson considers the financial crises his assessment is neither overly positive nor calamitous. "Before this crisis," Ferguson says, "there were people who thought there would never be another recession--that kind of crazy, myopic, unhistorical belief. That was followed in the last month or so by wild panic, as if it's the end of the world."

Ferguson states the obvious when he declares we will all be affected by the current financial mess, and that it will take a while for the market to correct itself.

In short, if you like history more than finance, this is going to be an enjoyable book for you. However, if it's the other way around the details might be suffocating.

This book has a ton of great whole food smoothie recipes for various ailments and illnesses. The one thing that could make it more helpful is more explanation about prepping - since you use the whole vegetable or fruit, a section on prep work to illustrate the amount of each to use would be welcome - i.e. do I keep the beet greens or carrot greens? Should I peel the ginger or not? There are some references to "see CAP manual" (or similar) for further information, but no indication of what this is. I assume it's another book, but for the price of this manual, I would have appreciated a stand-alone document.

Mia Sheridan has rendered me speechless yet again! She constantly moves me with her stories, captivating my heart, mind, body, and soul. There is no doubt that this is one of my TOP PICKS of 2015!

KYLAND is a beautiful, captivating story about sacrifice. It’s a story about hope, strength and the power of true love. This story is about finding hope in a world full of hopelessness, finding a particle of light in a world basking in darkness, and finding that one person who brings life to your withering soul. KYLAND is a story so powerful, so emotional, and so exceptional, it is incredibly hard to express all of my feelings. My thoughts and my emotions are all jumbled together, swirling around in my mind, unable to find a way to truly do this book justice. Reading this author’s stories is an experience I wish every single person would go through. Mia Sheridan holds my heart in her hands every single time I dive into one of her books. She has the ability to utterly destroy it or make it soar. And I welcome the pain and heartache over and over again.

Kyland and Tenleigh are two people with one common goal. They want out of this town. They want out of the hopelessness that it brings. What a beautifully written and deeply moving book! amazing!

Kyland by Mia Sheridan

I always struggle reviewing books by Mia Sheridan. Not because of the book itself but because I can never really seem to find the words to express how I really feel about her beautiful stories. And here I am struggling again. Like all of Mia's books before, Kyland is deeply profound and meaningful. I don't know where she finds her golden thread, but Mia somehow uses it to spin a tale nothing short of breathtaking every time!

Kyland Barrett and Tenleigh Falyn come from poverty the likes of which I have never seen or imagined. Yet, as I read about the living conditions, the town, the Appalachian Mountains, and its mountain folk I honestly could picture every bit of it in my head. That too, being Mia's gift. Being able to step into a place I have never visited and see it clearly and feel it in my bones.

The first time I saw Kyland barrett, he was swiping someone's discarded breakfast off a cafeteria table - Tenleigh

Despite the desperation and devastation these two have experienced, this book to me is about hope, well that and love of course. Being dirt poor, hungry and with no easy way out of Dennville Kentucky, Kyland and Ten are in competition for a way out, a future; The Tyton Coal Scholarship. Kylad has focused solely on winning this scholarship and getting as far away from Kentucky as he could. Tenleigh, too has worked tirelessly for the past 4 years to win and find a way to get her mother the help she needs along with a better life for her sister. But only one of them can win it and at what cost to the other?

"I'm going to leave here Tenleigh. Nothing is going to stop me. Not you, not anything. Not anyone. Do you hear me?" - Kyland

I find myself thinking about the fact that these two are just young kids, yet they are as mature as any adult I know. Being forced to fend for themselves made them grow up fast. Instead of worrying about cell phones, dates and social media, they focus on putting food in their bellies and staying warm. It amazed me through the entire book, how Kyland and Tenleigh found pleasure and joy in life's most simple basic things like sleigh riding, lavender fields, and books.

Sometimes my life felt so small. And I had to wonder why those of us who were given small lives, still had to feel pain so big. It hardly seemed fair - Tenleigh

The sacrifices they are each willing to make for others, including each other, are astounding. Never being selfish, but always being selfless. Each willing to give up on their own dreams for the sake of helping others. Falling in love when the outcome was going to be heartbreak, Kyland and Tenleigh were so brave.

"I realized I would happily suffer for you, because that's what loving someone is. Willing to do anything for them, willing to make any sacrifice, suffer so they don't have to. I loved you then, and I still love you now" - Kyland

Kyland is another must read from Mia Sheridan. It will leave you feeling hopeful, happy and full of faith. Kyland and Tenleigh were the perfect example of how good in this world does exist. I can't imagine what she will come up with next, but I will tell you this much, I'm reading it!!! Thank you Mia Sheridan! 5 big giant lip smacks for Kyland.

6 breathtaking, inspirational stars!

Every time I pick up a Mia Sheridan book I already have high expectations since she always seems to create such memorable characters and stories that touch my heart. I am not sure how she does it, but she did it again with Kyland. This one touched me in so many ways and is another unique masterpiece.

Kyland Barrett and Tenleigh Falyn are two teens stuck in a poor Kentucky mining town living in severe poverty, with family baggage, and few prospects. But there is one chance to get out and move forward...a scholarship sponsored by the local coal company...but there can only be one winner.

(Quote)All my life I was just a nothing, a nobody. My life was small and worthless, and it hurt so badly. (Tenleigh)

For most of their lives they lived in their single minded determination to win and leave, but one incident put them more under each other's radar and it built from there. In desolation they found a connection, but both had limited hope. And the one hope they did have meant that what one took, the other lost. But they also shared intelligence, inquisitiveness, a love of reading, and determination to succeed. They had a good rapport, attraction and a connection even when they tried to fight it for self preservation.

"I don't want to hurt you. I don't want to hurt me." (Kyland)

I felt everything these two did. The hopelessness, despair, the spark of attraction, denial, wariness, determination, fear, and passion. My heart hurt the whole time knowing they would be at direct odds eventually.

Tenleigh was strong, caring, and selfless. She not only wanted to improve her own life, but that of her family's. Kyland was a bit rough around the edges, stubborn, and harder to break down, but underneath it all he was highly intelligent and had a big heart too. He was used to being a loner and focusing on the end game. He did not want anything to attach him to the town or get in his way.

"I'm going to leave here, Tenleigh. Nothing is going to stop me, Not you, not anything. Not anyone. Do you hear me?"

They could truly understand each other's hurts, fears, feelings of abandonment, and need to succeed even with limited opportunities. My heart ached for their trials and their circumstances that were so big for these two young people to struggle with. It was challenging and heartbreaking, but these two young people had such resilience and strength of character and inherent goodness in them despite it all. The little joys and small pleasures that they intermittently allowed themselves made me smile because these kids did not take anything for granted and could derive pleasure out of the smallest things.

They know they could be making a mistake by getting involved, even as friends, with so much on the line and that there is a time limit. But even the promise of future pain, can't seem to stop the attraction and feelings that develop against their better judgment. No matter how he tries to be strong or deny it to protect her, they forge a connection that has a profound effect on them. They need each other to keep hope alive, persevere, and deal with issues that had hurt them. But they know they will eventually be faced with a tough situation that there is no going back from, that could leave them both heartbroken.

Mia Sheridan is a master story teller. She has a way of setting a scene and building characters that literally bring you right into the middle of it. She makes you love these characters and believe in them, become invested and then challenges them in some profound way. I felt their hunger, pain, embarrassment, despair, and drive to succeed. The details, descriptions, and intensity help you visualize the scenery and depth of of each impactful moment. It was told in both Kyland and Tenleigh's points of view and each having a powerful, emotional voice. And the anticipation and trepidation was built in and felt real during the pacing of the story. It takes your emotions on a diverging ride of tension, happiness, passion, heartbreak, and pain, but she always leaves a little smoldering hope that you pray can be inflamed fully.

"The hope that life won't always hurt so badly. The belief that I'll get out of here someday--that I won't be cold or hungry forever. It keeps me going. It's my fire. It helps me do the things I need to do to survive, and it helps me hate myself less for doing them." (Kyland)

This was a poignant, gorgeous, heart wrenching tale of love, loss, determination, hope, and sacrifice. The characters were incredibly well developed and life-like. They touched me on so many levels The plot line was unique, tragic, and inspiring. I was drawn in from the very first page and I could not absorb their story fast enough, All along as I read, my heart was held in suspended animation waiting for their time to be up, for decisions to be made, and for the bigger pain and disappointment to come. I knew at least one, if not both, of their hearts was going to break and mine right along with it. And the after effects and progression of the characters continued to keep me enthralled right through to the epilogue.

This book was an amazing, epic love story, but also a story of resilience, pride, faith, family, and community. I actually fell for many of the quirky side characters in this Appalachian town. I loved her sassy sister Marlo and her suitor, Sam, and the girls' slightly unstable Mama. Some of the neighbors were also quite colorful and others had their own life issues going on. But despite the division of those with money and those without, for the most part there was still a community spirit that could be pulled together when needed. It was also a journey of self discovery for both Kyland and Tenleigh. While learning about each other, they in turn they helped the other understand themselves and what they were truly capable of.

It could have been just a depressing story of the dark and ugly side of life, but it it manages to be inspiring and uplifting by showing that love can shine a light and bring out hidden beauty in the ugliest of circumstances. Along the way we see acts of sacrifice and selflessness, the pleasure in tiny joys, what really is important, and the positivity of giving back. There were times I was smiling or laughing, others I was touched or proud, and still others had tears in my eyes. But I felt everything deeply and was emotionally invested throughout.

It was a captivating, consuming, inspiring story of love, hope, healing and redemption with surprises and twists that I will not soon forget. It is my first six star read of the year and I do not give out six stars lightly. It is truly a stand alone and even though it is part of her A Sign Of Love series this book is not related to any of the books in the series.

...and I thought the first two books were good...

...but "The Solution Centric Organization" is amazing. With a pointed message that sales is about getting your entire organization aligned around solutions, Eades and Kear clearly communicate more than the "what" and the "why"--they drill into the "how". With a far clearer writing style than the first "Solutions" books, the authors discern between solutions and 'pseudo-solutions'. The last part of the book gives easy to use tools to ascertain specific areas to improve and it describes ways to begin to get the organization aligned.

"The Solution-Centric Organization" will impact our company more than any business book I've read.

What works & WHY...

Eades & Kear take The New Solution Selling to a higher level with the application of the principles throughout the enterprise. They examine the interactions and roles of the different departments (HR, Marketing, Compensation, Management, Service, and more) in a detailed yet concise analysis and application of their proper organizational involvement and accountabilities in a solution-centric organization.

If you have ever been curoius to know either where your roadblocks internally have been or why they exist and how to correct them then you really should make this book a priority. It is a must read for leaders of organizations in the midst of transforming their salesforce and more importantly company from product-focused to client-focused.
