The "Latest and Greatest" Health Food Discovery?
By Nathanael Greene
I am disenchanted with obtaining nutrition in commercially manufactured, synthetic (e.g., pill or gelcap) form, or in "latest and greatest" discoveries of exotic new nutrients, but astaxanthin intrigues me, as a nutrient to watch in the long-term.
NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN (Third Edition) is an extremely well-printed, gorgeous, glossy paperback book (with many striking color photographs), manufactured with high quality materials, about an intriguing new "natural" nutritional element that has recently been "discovered" and publicly publicized - the carotenoid astaxanthin - which is being commercially billed by Cyanotech Corporation as, inter alia, "The world's best kept health secret!"
Learning about astaxanthin's natural micro-nutrients and alleged healing properties for humans is significant and worthwhile, if scientifically valid and if astaxantin is commercially available in natural, whole-food sources. As a primer, NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN publicly provides introductory education, and publicly publicizes the potential health benefits of astaxanthin to humans. NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN's numerous, captivating color photographs are powerful and instructive - "a picture is worth a thousand words."
My "two-star" rating is not due to this book's subject matter, which I find suggestively fascinating, but is due to the extremely artful way in which this book's text presents its message, which wording I often found to be misleading and deceptive. The book is "on the record," and is replete with, cautionary hedge word, after cautionary hedge word. After the cumulative proliferation of cautionary hedges the book switches gears and states (page 117) to its readers that readers now have, on a cumulative basis, "seen all the HARD FACTS for yourself!"
HARD FACTS!
NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN is also permeated with (no caution here) adjectives - laudatory and praising - which, like NATURAL ASTAXANATHIN's treasured "testimonials," serve as substitutes for hard facts and hard science. Whereas I do not find NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN's "cautionary hedges" at all objectionable and in fact are consistently justified, I found the florid adjectives very hard to take - like having it both ways, by seeking to protect itself with cautionary hedges (that's O.K. and valid here), but then committing a complete u-term and heaping on the laudatory adjectives.
NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN contains extensive hype and spin - unattractive spin - and sometimes ridiculously silly spin, as in "Have you ever seen a rabbit wearing eyeglasses?" NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN's hype and spin frequently "jumps to conclusions" that are far more sweeping than appear to be justified by NATURAL ASTAXANTHAN's own text, including its "Reference" section - but, conversely, not in NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN's treasured "testimonials," including its "Testimonials" section (pp. 151-173).
"Testimonials" and "anecdotal evidence" (page 42) are presented in the body of NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN's text as "research." See, e.g., the entries for "Tennis Elbow (Tendonitis)" on page 41, "Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (Repetitive Stress Injury)" on pages 41-42 and 43, and "Rheumatoid Arthritis" on pages 42, 44. All of these "research" studies are exclusively based on people's "testimonials," i.e., peoples' subjective "self-reporting" and subjective "self-assessment" about their pain level, and not on any, e.g., scientific measurements. The "study" groups were small in numbers of people, and further reduced by "placebo" sub-groups; the duration of these "studies" was relatively brief. NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN then couches its research findings in conditional hedge words like, e.g., "can," or "may," or "could," or "appear," from which cautionary and qualified words the authors proceed to make incredibly sweeping statements - as in definitive conclusions - that apply to "everyone" (p. 45).
CAVEAT: NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN is published by a commercial corporation, Cyanotech Corporation, a commercial company which produces and commercially markets astaxanthin. Indeed, the two authors of NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN are employees of Cynotech Corporation, and one of the two authors (Dr. Gerald Cysewski) is the FOUNDER of Cynotech Corporation!
Cyanotech honestly and openly discloses (page 151) that it markets "Natural" (capital "N") Astaxanthin, under three different commercial brand names, so this book is a commercial marketing device. The book also repeatedly admits that there currently is a relative dearth or non-existence of scientific research about the nutritional benefits of astaxanthin to humans and, instead, in place of scientific research, relies heavily on human "testimonials" - which are weak and unreliable, as substitutes for scientific "proof."
None of the, sometimes sweeping, statements made in NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN are supported, in the chapters and text of NATURAL ASAXANTHIN, by footnoted citations of scientific authority.
I have serious reservations about single ingredient supplementation, most particularly with supplements in commercially manufactured, synthetic (and, e.g., possibly chemically-diluted or altered) form, as in, e.g., gel capsules. See astaxanthin's major crux of the current problem of "Delivery Methods" on pages 131-133. A related "delivery" issue is the nature and extent of "absorbing" astaxantin as a food for humans - for which see pages 129-131, under the heading of "Bioavailability."
The ongoing, cumulative opinion, of nutritional experts I respect, is for people to dine exclusively on natural whole foods, which in their natural whole-food state have, among other natural things, the proper proportions of individual nutritional components that one's body will recognize and accept - the body decides.
T. Colin Campbell, the "premier" nutritionist of the U.S., cogently observed that "self-medicating" with individual nutrients (often in massive, self-defeating, counter-productive doses), is nutritionally "silly" and in fact is NOT "nutrition," but rather is "PHARMACOLOGY" - misguided PHARMACOLOGY.
Along the same lines, nutrition professor Roberta H. Anding observed that "People eat whole food, they don't eat [individual] ingredients." That is a tad bit inaccurate, but I know what she means.
NON-SEQUITUR: "PUBLISHER'S NOTE" - ergo, "Cynotech Corporation's (the publisher) Note" - states that "The testimonials in this book are not intended to imply that Natural Astaxanthin can cure or prevent any disease!" That is a glaring non-sequitur. In NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN's concluding 23 pages of text, out of a total text of 173 pages, the authors list FIFTY-ONE personal testimonials, concerning FIFTY-ONE different health disorders, which astaxanthin supposedly aided in curing or eliminating - yet Cynotech Corporation states that they are not "implying" exactly what the authors of NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN are in fact are implying if not flat-out claiming. Personal testimonials do not constitute science. In fact, the authors themselves explicitly state (page 151) that these testimonials "are not scientific studies." The "premise" of the non-sequitur is the body of testimonials. The 23-page TESTIMONIALS chapter of NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN is needed by the publisher, because of the currently embryonic and currently weak nature of the science presented in, and should be compared with, the comparatively meager 12-page "Reference" section in NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN.
CAUSE & EFFECT RELATIONSHIP: The "testimonials" are confounding, in part, because of the issue of establishing a cause and effect relationship between the "effects" which the book's cited testimonials ascribe to astaxanthin, and whether astaxanthin is in fact what causes those alleged beneficial effects. So many variables and factors can, e.g., either (1) influence the behaviors and mechanisms of food (or individual ingredients) in the body, or (2) pertain to non-food factors as causing the beneficial effects described in the testimonials.
NOTE ON THE "REFERENCES:" A significant portion of the citations of scientific authority, in the 12-page "Reference" section of NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN, pertain to laboratory research conducted on experimental laboratory and other animals, the majority of which involve rats and mice, but also include dogs, rabbits, cats, various types of fish, as well as "larvae," biological cells, etc. A significant portion of the cited references do not identify the type of organism that may have been involved in the laboratory research. All of the referenced citations contain titles, but none indicates the actual outcome of the cited research, or what the parameters under which the research study was conducted. Some of the cited authorities seem to be of general application, that do not specifically apply to astaxanthin. A number of the research studies pertain to astaxanthin's cosmetic effect on human skin (a valid commercial cosmetics application), rather than to human nutrition - which is my exclusive interest. The title to one of the cited references (2008), in part, seems to sum up the situation with astaxanthin's prospects: "a novel potential treatment."
NEED OF AN INDEX: This book's Table of Contents is excellent, well-conceived, and well-detailed. Unfortunately, there is no index, excellent or otherwise.
MIXED RESEARCH RESULTS? NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN does not indicate whether any scientific research studies and results exist which contradict the research studies which Cynotech has been touting, to garner commercial interest in this product. Any citations in the "Reference" section of NATURAL ASTAXANTHIN which may contain unfavorable research results do not actually specify that information. I believe that science, including scientific research, usually involves or yields mixed results, so the absence of such contradictory research findings is surprising, particularly for the currently embryonic research for such a newly researched nutritional element like astaxanthin.
TIME WILL TELL: Astaxanthin is new, research about astaxanthin is currently embryonic - ergo, not comprehensive, definitive, or conclusive - but is apparently evolving. Cynotech also alleges that astaxanthin is a more difficult substance to work with (technically and commercially) than, e.g., the microalgae spirulina. However, astaxanthin may have great potential and promise as a significantly beneficial and healthful nutrient for animals and fish, and for humans.
A GIFT FROM THE SEA?: It is worthwhile to inform oneself about newly identified, natural whole-food nutritional elements, particularly if publicly available in natural, whole-food form. But "buyer beware," and exercise great caution in actually purchasing astaxanthin (or any nutrient) for personal nutritional use, in commercially manufactured, synthetic (and, e.g., in possibly chemically-diluted or altered) form - again, see pp. 131-133, re "Delivery Methods." Astaxanthin doesn't necessarily sink or swim on its commercial availability in gel caps. Astaxanthin may indeed be yet another "gift from the sea." This book's great merit is to inform the public of the existence of this new nutritional element, as contained in natural form, as in sockeye salmon.
FUTURE EDITIONS? Cynotech could significantly improve the next (e.g., 4th) edition of NATURAL AStAXANTHIN, possibly qualifying for a four star rating. Cautionary hedges are O.K. and even requird - I use them myself, when called for, as they frequently are - particularly regarding weak research. However, Cynotech needs to eliminate tricky spin and hype, and misleading and deceptive text. The 23 pages of "testimonials" should be deleted - testimonials, in "scientific" literature, are completely out of place and are major "RED FLAGS."
ANALOGUE (?): For many years, I have ingested, and continue to ingest, the microalgae spirulina, but only in powdered form. I view spirulina algae in powdered form as, basically, a natural (and unadulterated) whole food, and not as what the health food industry labels as a "supplement." Conversely, I do not view spirilina algae gel capsules (or tablets) as a whole food, and I refuse to ingest capsules of either spirulina algae or any "supplement." I believe that synthetic, manufactured capsules degrade the integrity of the substances capsules contain. I do not think capsules are harmful; I believe they are a complete waste of time and money.
SPIRULINA AS A "WHOLE" FOOD: A published report in 1940, by a French physician, described the collection by African natives of spirulina algae from the shores of Lake Chad, who sun-dried the spirulina algae into hardened cakes for human consumption. Twenty-five years later, a Belgian botanist observed dried, hardened cakes of spirulina algae being sold in native markets in Fort Lamy, in Chad. Therefore, African natives were consuming spirulina algae "whole," in sun-dried, hardened cake form. Historical records state that the ancient Aztecs consumed spirulina algae as a food prior to the Spanish conquest; spirulina algae was harvested by Aztecs in the Valley of Mexico. Spanish chronicles record the Aztecs' use of spirulina algae as a food. In its dried, powdered form, as marketed today, spirulia algae seems very similar to the sun-dried cakes of spirulina algae consumed by African natives, and by the ancient Aztecs.
Please note that isolated vitamins, minerals, and other individual, unique nutrients, such as phytcocyanin ("algae-blue") in spirulina algae are not being isolated and individually extracted from spirulina algae and marketed separately in, e.g., gelcap form. Purchasing spirulina algae in powdered, whole-food form would be a much less expensive, and more nutritionally healthy, alternative to purchasing isolated nutrients extracted from spirulina algae and marketed in, e.g., gelcap form.
Cynotech says it is experiencing difficulty in creating a commercially-viable powdered form of astaxanthin, for human consumption.
Parenthetically, I also use powdered sea vegetables - which I view as a whole food - as nutrients in cooking. I also use sea vegetables which have not been powdered.
