My name is John C. Pope and I’m a WWII, US Marine veteran. After more than six decades, battlefield memories of Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima remain as vivid for me as if they took place only moments ago. Many historians have documented the strategies of these horrific battles and their impact on the outcome of WWII. Scarce are the stories from the men who did the actual fighting. Sadly, many of the men had no chance to write their story. Their stories ended instantly when they fell dead on a tiny Pacific island, worlds away from their home and loved ones. I’m 90 years old now and one of a dwindling number of survivors. I realize my story needs be told while I still have my health and a sound mind.
As I set out to write this I want to make clear I make no claim whatsoever to be a tactician or having the slightest inside information as to how battles were planned. Everything I write here is based entirely on my personal experiences and the experiences of privates and corporals who fought alongside me.

An Amazing Story

God bless the author of this book for the courage it must have taken to bring back all the memories after so many decades of living with his incredible experiences. When the words "Our Greatest Generation" are brought up, Mr. Pope stands as the shining example of the honor and dedication exhibited by the Marine Corp as they fought for our freedom and created the nation we enjoy today.
The book is so well written in such an easy style that (while not planning to) I sat all day and read it in one sitting. What is written between the lines fires the imagination and the occasional brief commentary on topics ranging from medals awarded to conduct of our warriors then and today is appropriate and displays and uncommon amount of common sense.
I come away from reading this book a very enriched person with a tremendous appreciation for our veterans, especially those who fought with Mr. Pope in such intense and horrific conditions.
Once again, God Bless Mr. Pope for all he has accomplished and for sharing this amazing story.

Great story! Could not put it down!

I enjoyed immensely reading about a true American hero. Also of note the writer starts with his childhood. Growing up in the depression during hard times by honorable parents forged the steel that Mr Pope obviously carried from childhood into manhood. His steadfast loyalty, code of honor and ability to see past the difficult times insured his survival during the war, and on to a successful career post WWII. I am always amazed at the greatest generation's abiliy to live through such horrific times, then come home and raise a family not once complaining about what they lived through. This story is about one of the greatest of the greatest generation. A true hero ( although he does not consider himself one). Great first hand account of a war fought far from home by our fathers. A must read for those that enjoy reading WWII history.

Such a poignant portrayal of life and the worst of war by a citizen soldier - a must read!

John Pope was a Marine private in the thick of amphibious landings and the horrors of combat to rid Pacific islands, including Iwo Jima, of Japanese soldiers who would not surrender. Now ninety years old, and after sixty years of silence on the subject, in "Angel on my Shoulder," he tells the incredibly gut-wrenching story of what he and his buddies experienced in World War II. May we never forget the sacrifices made by his, the greatest generation.
