Glorious!
By Leapyear
Ms. Krier is a most brilliant, entertaining, truly literary, engrossing, and courageous writer. Her prose is clear, informative, and character-specific. She writes quite vividly, but never at the expense of character or plot. This story may seem to get off to a slow start. SO many characters to introduce, relationships and forensic details to reveal. The procedural itself seems so long in stasis, with no evidence whatsoever. BUT, DO NOT BE FOOLED! It is all part of Ms. Krier's plan! The resultant pay off reveals just how masterfully every single seed of her story has been planted. Deep in the soil yet always growing. It blossoms, ultimately, into a beautiful, perfect, brutal rose, thorns and all. Carefully tended from the start (I'm getting carried away with this "flower" metaphor), the bloom's growth is mesmerizing, and entirely plausible, fully satisfying and remarkably brave. The slower periods of "growth" make total sense once the first tendrils appear.

Often, in crime fiction, the perpetrator appears at the last minute. Rather a cheat, I think. With zero seeds having been planted, making his/her sudden revelation nothing but a haphazardly arranged bouquet of laziness. Coldhouse flowers grown fully out-of-sight, resulting in an unsatisfying, implausible, last minute "delivery". THIS book, THIS bouquet's creation and delivery, by a character who is present throughout the book (though who is not at all obviously the killer), makes the denouement both surprising and not at all a surprise. And, DOES make the novel's mastery all the more remarkable. Because, it's ALL RIGHT THERE! From the BEGINNING! We, as well as the investigators, were nothing but reasonably unaware of what we were seeing! This complex, yet completely, obsessively readable book, is far too rare an occurrence in crime fiction, where sudden, never before focused-on characters are suddenly the killers, suddenly just poppingup at the door, delivering their blood-drenched bouquets! ! The card, which accompanying their haphazard and perfunctorilly assembled arrangements, must take on the tiresome task of explaining everything we never could have known, making totally unsatisfying this rushed, implausible, perfunctory explanation.

BUT, in "Baby's Got Blue Eyes", we have a killer who is there the entire book. SPOILER: And, how BRILLIANT having him/her RESPONSIBLE for the lack of evidence! IN CHARGE, in fact, of its very detection and delivery! Which makes the revelation of the killer's identity both astounding, a true revelation, satisfying, and something that feels completely right.

I must add that, as a gay reader of crime fiction, having the lead detective be gay, and involved in a charming long term relationship, was fun and somehow moving. DI Darling's sexuality, however, has almost everything and nearly nothing to do with the murders and investigation. Darling's sexuality adds an interesting character trait, effecting only that which is appropriate, but as important an element to his detectiveness, his policies and insights, as is any lead detective's personal history. In other books, it's the loneliness brought on by "the job", or by the violent loss of a spouse or parent. A battle with drugs or alcohol or women or with weary indifference. He could been the victim of an assault or endured the violent loss of a partner. Or perhaps his/her ethnicity is considered unusual under the circumstances. DI Darling's gay. And, KIND! This exists in him as an advantage, a blind spot, or as nothing in particular. But, unto itself, it's something blessedly new to the genre! An interesting aspect of his character, making clear how a detective's unique composition comes into play during any investigation, making each character trait of importance. This is, however, by no means a "gay novel". It is a crime thriller whose lead detective is who he is. He is also short. A Marshall arts master. He fell off a horse when it sneezed. He is an unusually compassionate boss who is FRIENDS with his superior. He is in a committed, long term relationship.I loved the author's fun, seemingly haphazard touches. Like having Darling and his life partner be involved in martial arts, or having the partner love motorcycles, which both turn out to be NOT AT ALL haphazard, but interests that PAY OFF. THAT'S the REAL glory of this novel. EVERYTHING PAYS OFF! NOTHING is just THERE. Everything seemingly random or nonessential PAYS OFF!

And, the novel's ending -- how wonderful, first, that it HAS one -- most crime fiction these days doesn't so much end as stop -- but the ending of this wildly entertaining literary achievement, which makes the solving of the crime it's penultimate event, was a delightful surprise, fully earned, brilliantly set up, and truly, deeply moving. "Baby's Got Blue Eyes" is now, as you may have guessed, one of my new favorite books, as Ms. Krier is one of my new favorite authors. I cannot WAIT to read EVERYTHING the woman has had put into print! What an unparalleled joy it is, reading this woman's mind! ONWARD!

Superb read
By Lynnette Ross
As someone who is not normally a reader of crime stories, this novel has certainly changed my thinking about that genre. I was a little uncertain about purchasing this book but had read and enjoyed previous books written by the same author under another name. So a leap of faith and this book was purchased. I certainly do not regret my purchase.

Drawn into the story from the first page with descriptions of characters that presented them very much as 3-dimensional people. The author has created truly believable characters and it was not difficult to relate emotionally to all of them, in some way. As a reader, I enjoyed the range of emotions elicited, the sadness, the pleasure, the harshness, the thrills, the twists and the conspiracy. I particularly enjoyed the detail given was more about people, circumstances and situations, with minimal (but appropriate) graphic detail around the crime scenes. A superb plot with appropriate "red herrings". One has to wonder how the original idea was born, and how ideas for sequels will develop.

Will I read another crime story? Certainly I will purchase any sequel(s) by L.M. Grier but I'm not sure about other crime writers as I will judge all others on L.M Krier's superb style of story-telling.

Brilliant!
By jillipen
It is often true that when you publish a book the first few reviews will be from friends or family. And I make no secret of the fact that I am friends with the author. When she told me she was writing in this genre I was horrified to be honest. I was sure that it was a bad idea and I knew that she would be expecting an honest review, I am known for writing honest reviews, sometimes brutally so, and I had no intentions of treating this book any differently, even if it meant testing a friendship.

So it was such a surprise and a relief when I started reading it. - I was stunned. I loved her other books but have to say if I could only read one book from this author, I would choose this one. I love crime dramas, but I do tire of the stereotyping that is attached to the characters. It’s time for a change, and here it is.

Gone is the stereotypical detective - overweight, burger addict that is stuck in a crap marriage with a string of affairs. In this we are introduced to a new kind of copper, more in keeping and realistic with the times we live in. This is so modern, it and such a refreshing read. I loved it. I wish I could give it 6 stars. Looking forward to the sequel.
