Review

"… a guide though the thicket of contradictions and trade-offs in this area. … The well-written collection of 12 chapters starts with the basics of computing, networking, and data mining, and proceeds through systems vulnerabilities, attacks, and defenses, all within the perspectives of costs (economy), law, social engineering, and public policy. … Highly recommended."
―J Beidler, University of Scranton, in CHOICE Magazine, April 2014

"Sloan and Warner’s new book comprehensively analyzes consumer privacy and security from a game theoretic viewpoint. Their approach crisply explains both consumer and firm behavior and offers useful predictions for where market or regulatory approaches are needed for consumer protection."
―Chris Jay Hoofnagle, Lecturer in Residence, UC Berkeley Law

"The success of this book is in making non-technical readers think about the situation we are in and the hard choices that we are left with."
―Sithu D. Sudarsan, in Computing Reviews

" … the writing style increases the accessibility of the content and enhances its appeal to a broader readership, including graduate students, postgraduate students, and informed lay readers. … Fortunately, this book was written by experts with a deep knowledge and understanding of the field, who present complex issues in a refreshingly straightforward manner. … will stimulate the thinking of students at all levels, especially those in computer science and engineering courses focusing on ethical and professional issues."
―Barry Blundell, in Computing Reviews

Very readable book on an important topic
By M Neiberg
The authors have crafted a very thoughtful and readable book on the important topic of on-line privacy in the commercial sphere. It requires no special knowledge of either law or technology, and clearly conveys the issues that arise in our daily lives. With the current emphasis on government surveillance, we can forget just how much commercial entities intrude into our private lives. Amazon knows everything about you! Really!

Makes subject accessible to wide audience
By Afia
This book makes the subject of online privacy surprisingly accessible. One author has a distinguished career in computer science and the other in law, with both authors specializing in matters of online privacy.

There were many valuable findings, insights, and explanations. For example, the authors showed how companies provide users with some limited means of privacy but often make it especially difficult to operate in a limited private manner. Facebook is the most favored company cited within the book. There is a lot of material on Facebook in particular. Facebook apparently provides a large set of features to allow users to operate in a relatively more private way, but then it makes it difficult on the users to use those features by deliberating changing the features frequently.

This book in addition to explaining phenomena and practices makes policy recommendations. The recommendations are thoughtful yet I didn't get the impression that the authors believe they will be implemented due to politics and the sophistication of the subject. Perhaps at some future point it will be possible for the public to rally around one of the policy issues.

Great Read, highly Informative
By Tristan A. Hayes
Although the book may be from 2013 it feels even more relevant today. Online privacy and security is a major aspect of our lives and as time has gone on more and more examples of failures of companies to protect information or release software lacking blatant and embarrassing vulnerabilities have come to light. Just the week of this writing weve seen examples in video games in which companies released buggy software to consumers instead of spending the time to fix problems before coming to market, all in the pursuit of being faster because consumers demanded faster released software. This needs to change.

The book succeeds on showing the need for norm-compatible software practices needed in the software selling market. We consumers are not good at managing to understand the details of the software we use or even how vulnerable they are, but we could take more time to demand that the software be less vulnerable and buggy as it already is. The game theories put forth by the book highlight these points well.

I enjoyed the walkthrough on establishing norms to aid in the development of software and the handling of big data that companies have been collecting on us that we may even not agree too. Due to this I think I found that I also have some norms that I would like to be upheld by companies and maybe will start to avoid ones that offer norm-incompatible products. Hopefully if enough others read this book or at least listen to friends and other groups detailing norm-incompatible products a coordination norm will develop. This will no doubt mean that business will ought to conditionally conform to the demands of what consumers want.I like this viewpoint from the book as it seems better than regulatory type of managing of companies (which seems hard to enforce in the computer world).

Great read and highly informative.
