A rollicking good adventure

I purchased this for a younger nephew of mine as a birthday present and couldn't resist the temptation to read it before passing it along. I grew up with the Tintin graphic novels and was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable this book translation of the original proved to be. The original Secret of the Unicorn was one of the best Tintin comics so I was a bit nervous at how movie-tized the novel adaptation would be and indeed, it does play as a series of large set pieces but, in context, this works quite well. While no one is going to accuse this of being a super serious work of literature, its exactly what it intends to be - a fast reading, fun adventure story, told well, that should be enjoyable for most audiences. I don't know how faithful this is to the movie as I have not seen it yet.

Pointless.

This really is pointless; the originals are great for a reason, & dumbing down the language, plot & context doesn't do future generations any favors. I grew up reading Tintin, & loved them as much as I love them now that I'm an adult and understand the historical context of stories like The Blue Lotus. The movie had some issues, nothing better or worse than most movies based on books, but I consider the release of a "novel" recapping the movie - itself a mash of multiple Tintin story lines - nothing short of plagiarism.
Please do yourself & your children a favor and buy the Herge originals. Even if you don't like what I have to say here, consider this: The real thing costs less, so you can buy more of them.

A pleasing novalisation for those who want more

The Adventures of Tintin is a wonderful companion to the movie and compliments the comic book series by adding to the depth of the stories without taking away anything from Herge's marvellous creation in Tintin.
