Errors, but helpful

Lots of errors. I'm pretty sure cisco doesn't have a command called "shower interfaces status." That being said, the sheer amount of questions in the book really help point out areas where I need review before exam day. Just what I needed in my final stages of prep. Thanks!

Great book whether read a day at a time or continuously

Patient but direct style of E. Stanley Jones is wonderful. His approach of short messages put in small topical groups is better than other devotional styles that have less structure. You can easily read one day at a time or in groups of 6-7. ESJ has several devotionals worth reading including "The Way".

The delivery and physical condition of book was excellent. It had not been read. Struck me as sad considering it was a gift from loving parents to a wayward son... They had written a note

The new game will have a LOT to live up to

This and Asunder (the last two Dragon Age tie in novels) have both been fantastic reads. They stand on their own as stories I think, with the occasional cameo from the games always make me smile. But seriously, the characters are all extremely well written, its fast paced, and has a dozen twists and turns to keep you engaged. Both of these books have set the bar high for the next game, Dragon Age: Inqusition, since the game will deal with a lot of the fallout from the novel.

That is one thing to keep in mind-if you want to go into the game totally blind, I would wait to read this until after you have played. Characters from the novel have a very good chance of showing up as quest givers, allies, and antagonists in the game (it would seem), so if you don't want that knowledge, wait till you've played to read. (You should DEFINITELY still read this though if you are a fan!)

Excellent character development

The strength of this novel is Weekes' excellent job of character development and his ability to make you sympathize with all the characters. At the beginning of the story I was fully prepared to despise the antagonist, however, by the end of the novel I was equally sympathetic with all of the characters as their strengths and flaws were revealed. Fun political intrigue and a nice backdrop for the upcoming game Dragon Age: Inquisition. If you aren't a Dragon Age fan, this novel is still an excellent entry in the fantasy genre with complex characters and a nice depth of lore.

Politics, murder, and racism in a high fantasy world

One of the major problems I had with Dragon Age 2 was the game had something of a monomaniacal focus on the Templar and Mage issue. The Qunari were also present, thank the Maker, but it seemed to make the setting smaller rather than larger. One of the most appealing elements of Dragon Age: Origins was it illustrated the staggering number of issues which were plaguing the continent: elvish bigotry, dwarf classicism, mage oppression, religious fanaticism, Qunari totalitarianism, Tevinter slavers, and the fact the nobility ranged from the Stark-like Couslands to Joffrey-like psychopaths like Arl Howe.

With the set up of Dragon Age: Inquisition initially looking like it would deal with the Mage and Templar War I was rather worried the other elements would fall to the wayside even further. Thankfully, both the information coming out from Bioware as well as The Masked Empire. The Masked Empire deals with areas of storytelling almost untouched by Dragon Age 2 and which I think will play a big role in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Specifically, the plight of elves and the Orlesian Empire.

Orlais has been a country which has long had an important role in Dragon Age but has yet to be fully detailed until now. Whereas Fereldan has served as the archetypal stand-in for England, Scotland, and Wales--Orlais has served as an analog for France. It is a country which is much more than this, though, embodying the setting's concepts of autocracy and the divine right of Kings. Orlais is the largest, most powerful, richest, and most dangerous nation in Thedas.

It didn't get there by being nice.

Interestingly, Orlais is shown to be a multifaceted nation too. Whereas much is made of the brutality and cruelty of Orlais' nobility during their occupation of Fereldan, Awakening's Baroness being based on Elizabeth Bathory, we also have fan-favorite Leliana (one of the sweetest characters in the franchise) hail from said nation. They are a thoroughly humanized bunch of characters but have cultural attitudes which are decidedly, well, Medieval.

As for the elves, one of the things I always enjoyed about Dragon Age was they were a race which was as far from Tolkien's conception of them as godlike immortal beings as you could get. As the settings analog to both Jews and Romani, elves are a despised minority desperately trying to cling to their cultural heritage in the face of brutal oppression. Fereldan, normally treated as much better than Orlais, still has elven women abducted for sexual assault from their wedding and a full-on pogrom when they try to resist.

Yeesh.

The premise follows the political struggles of Empress Celene and her elven lover, Briala. It's rare enough we see women in authority without being overtly sexualized. It's doubly-so to see a lesbian woman in authority. Empress Celene could have easily been cast as a bisexual but there's no indication that she or her lover have any interest in men other than potential political allies.

Celene appears to be a woman who holds liberal attitudes to the plight of elves and is more interested in patronizing the arts versus military expansionism. However, looks can be deceiving, as she's also a master politician with the ruthless streak necessary to rule a country which has institutionalized intrigue. Briala has a somewhat rose-colored view of Celene, viewing her as a messianic protector of her people who will deliver Orlais out of its current dark age of autocracy.

She's wrong.

Opposing our heroes is Grand Duke Gaspard, a brutal imperialist warlord who wishes to invade the nation of Fereldan and put it under a military dictatorship for no other reason than to distract Orlesians from their constant infighting. He's a monster planning the deaths of thousands for no other reason than because, as a chevalier, war is his trade and he sees nothing wrong with practicing it. Yet, despite this, Duke Gaspard reveals himself to be possibly one of the few Orlesians with any sense of integrity. Most characters in the novel would throw away their honor, for whatever worth that is, when it threaten their position.

Gaspard's word is his bond and he doesn't rules-lawyer it either. Between he and Empress Celene, I'm not sure who I would rather have as my ruler. Empress Celene as an enlightened liberal ruler seems like she's the sort of person who would be better to my modern sensibilities. However, she's a politician and flat-out untrustworthy. Duke Gaspard, by contrast, is a ruthless war monger but you can expect him to honor your agreements. That is an ugly pair of choices if our Inquisitor is called to support one or the other in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

The supporting cast in The Masked Empire is great too. I despised the character of Michel and hope there's an option for killing him in Inquisition but, honestly, I can't say I don't understand why he chose to make the choices he did. I think those choices have damned him, either secularly or metaphysically depending on your beliefs re: Dragon Age's afterlife, but I understand them. I also loved the character of Felassan who is a delightful Trickster mentor and reminds me of the early legends of Merlin.

The worldbuilding in this book is great with insights into how the Dalish mages view City Elves, the City Elves view Dalish mages, how half-elves are treated by society, and how the Orlesian nobility looks down on them all. We get insight into the Game which all of the Orlesian nobility plays and how their system of honor works. I've always liked how honor was treated in Dragon Age as we see in both the Dwarvish and Orlesian world that it allows you to do monstrous things but think of yourself as a good person.

In conclusion, as much as I hated some of the characters for their actions, this is a really good book. I prefer Asunder but I think The Masked Empire is objectively better if that makes any sense. Fans of Dragon Age should pick this up ASAP.

Great for undergrad course in pathophysiology

I've used both Huether/McCance and the past two editions of the Gould text. As a U of Utah school of med alum, have to be nice to the Huether McCance team as it is a reference quality text that remains, well, reference quality, but for the beginning student in pathophys who may be years out of A and P, just too daunting and detailed. For those students Gould is a much better match IME as it provides some of the most coherent reviews of A and P available anywhere, while providing a solid foundation in Patho. For a master's level class, go with H/M; undergrads I believe are better served by the Gould text.

Avoid if possible- be aware of errors and omisions

My two biggest complaints about this text is that it glosses over complex topics that are NECESSARY for understanding pathophysiology, and that it takes the same disease process/ topic and describes it *just slightly* in different ways in different parts of the text- enough to make you wonder if you are missing information or do not understand it fully. I found myself using other sources/ textbooks for the course. The book wastes space repeating the same symptoms for diseases (within a group)- when that space would be better utilized with more depth. It would be simple enough to say the following diseases X,Y,Z share this common symptomology/ process/ etiology etc. Some of the depths concerns are, for example: How do you write an entire chapter on electrolyte balance/ homeostasis and not mention the RAAS? There is no mention of transcription factors- but that is the target of some drugs, not to mention cell signaling.

There are also errors peppered throughout- some of which my professor stated that she emailed about last year and the errors have not changed. And the Evolve modules that go with the text are FULL of contradictions. My school won't be using it again so there goes my shot at getting some money back for this text.

Great resource

This is my textbook for graduate level pathophysiology. It is not a "fun" read but it is such a great collection of information. I have the study guide too. I would suggest this to any student health professional looking to gain a matter of fact vocabulary and concise understanding of human pathophysiology in the health care setting.

A joyful celebration of faith, filled with uplifting advice.

I highly recommend this book for all Christians, but especially for new Christians. It is a joyous proclamation of faith, filled with amusing and uplifting anecdotes. Mr. Ziglar is famous for his motivational speeches and is highly sought after by corporate America to inspire and teach. He writes as well as he speaks and anyone who reads this book will greatly benefit from his shared experiences in Christian living. In today's world a book that focuses on the positive aspects of Christianity is welcome and this book is tops in that category. I have shared this book with many of my friends and if you are looking for a good book to give to a young person, graduate, new Christian, or anyone else, I highly recommend "Confessions of a Happy Christian." The doctrine is sound, the advice is excellent and the book is focused on the love and joy of living the Christian life.

This is such a joyfully written book. I think it is appropriate for "new" Christians as well as "old" Christians. Zig, as always, is right on target with his observations and insight. I highly recommend it.

I read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I gave a copy to my father who liked it so much that he commented "Next to the Bible, it is the best book I have ever read!" Of course some narrow-minded people consider the Bible too narrow.

Perfect for a foundation in history

I read a lot of the reviews on this book - especially the negative reviews - and had to write my own because I think there are many ways to approach this book series.

This is our first year homeschooling our 4th grade daughter and we met and grilled many of the homeschool mothers in our area on their system of teaching. One of them recommended the Wise/Bauer book "The Well-Trained Mind" which seemed to be a very good fit for both my teaching style and our daughter's learning style. "The Well-Trained Mind" recommends, of course, this series of books for teaching history. But what a lot of people are missing, I think, is that Volume 1 is meant for 1st grade, Volume 2 for 2nd grade, etc. These 4 volumes are also meant to be the first of 3 levels of teaching history as the child goes through his/her 12 years of education. In other words, these four volumes are laying the groundwork for what's to come. It's not a be-all end-all history course.

The reason my approach is different is because I'm using this series of books to catch my daughter up to where a well-educated child should be by the 4th grade. Up through to the end of 3rd grade in the public school system, the only exposure she'd had to history is to the timespan just before and just after the American revolutionary war. So we had a lot of ground to cover. But I didn't want it to turn into a grind for her, so I took the authors' intentions to heart and I'm using this series to form a groundwork for a basic understanding of history.

So what I'm doing is covering all four volumes in 1 year. That works out to a little over 2 months per volume or 4 chapters (for Volume 1) per week. I skipped the activity book but did buy the workbook with the quizzes. We've read to our daughter since she was a baby and she still loves to be read to, so for the 1-hour class (which I hold twice a week) I read 2 chapters to her, discussing what we're reading as I go along. She loves it and the book is easy to read from. Before class starts, I give her 2 quizzes from the 2 chapters read in the previous class. She gets about as many questions right as I would and it's just to help reinforce what I've read to her.

So all the complaints about inaccuracies in the book and the author's religious slant (which I didn't find and I was looking for), they don't matter. What really matters is that my daughter enjoys learning about history (it's her favorite class) and she's building a foundation that can be built on in later years.

In addition to this series and its workbooks, I also picked up "The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia." Once a week I give her homework to read assigned pages from this book to reinforce or, perhaps, to give a different point of view on what she's just learned.

All history books will turn up people who will disagree with the content, will find inaccuracies in the material, or won't agree with the author's point of view. But, guess what? It doesn't matter. Your child is still young and you are filling in a background in history that his/her public school peers will never have.

Good introduction to an important subject.

I searched out this book after listening to Ms. Bauer's audiobook, "The History of the Medieval World," which is well worth an adult's time to digest. I am reading "The Story of the World" to my six-year-old son, and he loves it. I wasn't sure he would take to a long book without many pictures, so I'm pleasantly surprised.

Perhaps you should know my purpose and background, in order to evaluate this review. I am not an expert on history, as many reviewers here claim to be. If Ms. Bauer makes a historical mistake, it'll need to be glaring for me to catch it. My son attends a public school, so I'm not using this as a textbook at home. I want my son to know history because that's the best way to know what to expect from people. In our opinion, this book is excellent for its purpose. I'm sure we'll want more detailed, mature treatments of the subject later on. Right now, the beginning exposure is what's most important.

I read the negative reviews with interest. Most seem disappointed on religious grounds; either Ms. Bauer's story is too Christian or not Christian enough. I'm an atheist, and I think her treatment of myths and religious history is appropriate and manageable. I'm not expecting her to deliver enlightenment on that front. I encourage anyone interested to read the sample pages offered on the Amazon site. I think the gaps in this series can only be remedied by further reading, not an attempt to find one perfect textbook. Good luck to all you parents.

Excellent.... for its intended purpose

We used this book last year and are now half way through the second volume. I think both books do a phenomenal job of meeting their stated purpose: to INTRODUCE world history in an engaging fashion to early elementary aged students. I think it's very important to purchase the activity book along with the book, as the activity book not only has tons of really fun and reasonably simple activities that help bring history alive, but also contains stellar recommendations for further reading. The fact that many of those recommendations flat out contradict the viewpoints presented by the author in this book is an indication of Bauer's academic integrity, in my opinion.

Many of the critiques of this series hinge on the fact that the book is loaded with inaccuracies and mythology. It is. But even stick-to-the-facts-and-only-the-facts history text books (which are BORING) are full of inaccuracies. At least this is interesting. Also, an understanding of the intended purpose of the book is important. It's designed as a read-aloud, NOT to be read independently by the child. It's also designed to serve as an INTRODUCTION to historical topics and parents are encouraged to supplement the stories by doing further investigation. I'd like to see the book that could adequately present all of the complexities and varying historical arguments about a topic in two pages in a child-friendly format.

I think there is a Christian bias throughout the book, but as a non-Christian I haven't found that to be particularly problematic. For example, the story of the Exodus is presented in a much more factual format than many of the other mythologies in the book. There are plenty of people who believe in the absolute historical accuracy of that story, so for them that's just fine. If you don't, it's not like it's exactly difficult to point out to your child how extremely similar that story is to so many other religious mythologies of the time period (which are also included in the book). Again, that's why it's designed as a read-aloud, rather than a story to be read independently, so that the stories can inspire a discussion between the parent and the child. In areas that don't touch on sensitive topics for Christians, I've found the stories to be fairly balanced and there's plenty of places where Bauer points out the limitations of historical "knowledge."

For us, the books have served their purpose exactly. My 7 year old son thinks history is interesting and fun. He's also able to ask some pretty interesting questions and draw connections. The viewpoints he's acquiring through studying history in this format are thoughtful and he's not inclined to take everything he reads as verbatim truth. A few of his historical observations:
1- reacting to a story on the news about suicide bombers "That's not such a good idea. The Egyptians would have thought that the devourer would eat your heart if you carry around so much hatred in it."
2- reacting to another story about the conflict between modern day Iran and the US. "Why doesn't the Iranian government read their own history? If they'd treat people the way Cyrus the Great did they wouldn't have so many problems."
3- reaction to the story of David and Goliath- "Why was David so sure God would be on his side? Didn't the Jews teach that God created all people? So doesn't that mean that God created Goliath too? Then why is David so sure God will choose him?"
4- after reading about Confucious- "Oh, his teachings were a whole lot like the Buddha's teachings. Maybe they learned from the same place."
5- after reading about the Chinese invasion of Korea and the Frankish King Clovis' forced conversion to Christianity of his people- "These kings didn't pay very much attention to their own religions. Now, I contrast that to my own historical perspectives when I was his age and learning history (which was naturally confined to American history) in a 2nd grade public classroom: The pilgrims and the Indians were great friends, as indicated by the story of Thanksgiving. President Lincoln was always completely honest and he loved black people so he freed the slaves. Talk about bias. All in all, I'm not in the least concerned about the inaccuracies in Story of the World.
