Britain and World War One, by Alan G. V. Simmonds

The First World War appears as a fault line in Britain’s twentieth-century history. Between August 1914 and November 1918 the titanic struggle against Imperial Germany and her allies consumed more people, more money and more resources than any other conflict that Britain had hitherto experienced. For the first time, it opened up a Home Front that stretched into all parts of the British polity, society and culture, touching the lives of every citizen regardless of age, gender and class: vegetables were even grown in the gardens of Buckingham Palace.

Britain and World War One throws attention on these civilians who fought the war on the Home Front. Harnessing recent scholarship, and drawing on original documents, oral testimony and historical texts, this book casts a fresh look over different aspects of British society during the four long years of war. It revisits the early war enthusiasm and the making of Kitchener’s new armies; the emotive debates over conscription; the relationships between politics, government and popular opinion; women working in wartime industries; the popular experience of war and the question of social change.

This book also explores areas of wartime Britain overlooked by recent histories, including the impact of the war on rural society; the mobilization of industry and the importance of technology; responses to air raids and food and housing shortages; and the challenges to traditional social and sexual mores and wartime culture. Britain and World War One is essential reading for all students and interested lay readers of the First World War.

Review

"[Britain and World War One], written in jargon-free language easily accessible to undergraduates (and with meticulous proofreading) is unreservedly recommended for purchase in all university libraries and it should henceforth figure on all reading lists on British society and the First World War." - Antoine Capet, H-Albion (H-Net)

"An excellent integrated treatment of how the war affected British society ... these chapters are packed with data that provide often valuable insights into how the war was affecting Britain and British society ... A valuable read for anyone interested in Britain during the Great War or of war and society." - A. A. Nofi, StrategyPage, The New York Military Affairs Symposium

"Simmonds does a particularly fine job of analyzing the shift in party politics and the response of coalition government to the crises of food, production, housing, prices, and labor... This book should be required reading for those who want to understand shifting political alliances, the challenges of managing manpower (and womanpower), and the reluctant move to conscription." - Tammy M. Proctor, The Historian

The British Home Front during World War I
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'Simmonds, who has written extensively on British society in the twentieth century, gives us look at the Home Front in Britain during the Great War. Although necessarily divided into chapters dealing such areas as mobilization, industry, government, social changes, and more, Simmonds tries, with fair success, to show the inter-relationships among these various aspects of Home Front life. A number of side bars serve as mini-appendices to probe more deeply into some facets of life, such as food production, manpower management, sex and morality, and so forth. A valuable read for anyone interested in Britain during the Great War or of war and society.'

String Searching Algorithms (Lecture Notes Series on Computing), by Graham A Stephen

String searching is a subject of both theoretical and practical interest in computer science. This book presents a bibliographic overview of the field and an anthology of detailed descriptions of the principal algorithms available. The aim is twofold: on the one hand, to provide an easy-to-read comparison of the available techniques in each area, and on the other, to furnish the reader with a reference to in-depth descriptions of the major algorithms. Topics covered include methods for finding exact and approximate string matches, calculating 'edit' distances between strings, finding common sequences and finding the longest repetitions within strings. For clarity, all the algorithms are presented in a uniform format and notation.

The State of Access: Success and Failure of Democracies to Create Equal Opportunities (Brookings / Ash Center Series,

This book documents a worrisome gap between principles and practice in democratic governance. The State of Access is a comparative, cross-disciplinary exploration of the ways in which democratic institutions fail or succeed to create the equal opportunities that they have promised to deliver to the people they serve. In theory, rules and regulations may formally guarantee access to democratic processes, public services, and justice. But reality routinely disappoints, for a number of reasons—exclusionary policymaking, insufficient attention to minorities, underfunded institutions, inflexible bureaucracies. The State of Access helps close the gap between the potential and performance in democratic governance.

The Complete Zap Comix Boxed Set, by R. Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Gilbert Shelton, Spain Rodriguez, Robert Williams, Victor Moscoso, Paul Mav

This is a more-than-complete collection (it includes the unpublished 17th issue!) of the quintessential underground comic book.

There scarcely was an underground comics world before Robert Crumb’s classic solo first issue ofZap. By Zap #2, he had begun assembling a Seven Samurai of the best, the fiercest, and the most stylistically diversified cartoonists to come out of the countercultural kiln. All of them were extremists of one sort or another, from biker-gang member Rodriguez to Christian surfer Griffin, but somehow they produced a decades-long collaboration: a mind-blowing anthology of abstract hallucination, throat-slashing social satire, and shocking sexual excess, that made possible the ongoing wave of alternative cartoonists like Daniel Clowes, Chris Ware, and Charles Burns. The Complete Zap Comix collects every issue of Zap ― every cover and every story, and even the Zam mini comic jam among the Zap artists ― in a five-volume, slipcased hardcover set. It will also include the 17th unpublished issue with work by Crumb, Moscoco, Wilson, Rodriguez, Shelton, Mavrides, and Williams. Plus, an introduction by founder R. Crumb and an oral history of Zap by Patrick Rosenkranz. Zap is the most historically and aesthetically important comics series ever published.

Also included exclusively in this boxed set is a portfolio ofZap covers by the eight artists, replicated from high resolution scans and proofs, and specially printed for this edition on acid-free, 100% cotton fine-art paper utilizing archival pigment inks.

Review
“Far f***ing out.” (David Pescovitz - Boing Boing)

“Provocative, filthy and unquestionably excellent, this collection is a crown jewel in comics history.” (Sean Edgar - Paste)

“Yes, this is $500. Yes, it will absolutely blow some budding underground cartoonists mind. A monumental achievement.” (Joe Gross - Austin American-Statesman)

“The irony of turning something that was once sold in dirty bookstores into a $500 collectible is delicious, but I can’t think of a more deserving title than Zap. The production quality of The Complete Zap Comix is first rate and the pages are clearer than they’ve ever been… Seeing the whole of the Zap run laid out like this, it seems obvious ― so very, very obvious ― what a profound and truly American cultural treasure this is. This is great art of historical and cultural importance that changed people, blew their minds and inspired them. … Zap Comix deserves to be reappraised and valued for what it’s truly worth and Fantagraphics has done an amazing job with this stunning box set.” (Richard Metzger - Dangerous Minds)

“…The Complete Zap [is]… strikingly designed… While the early issues stand as rowdy documents of the 1960s counterculture, Zap was also more. In reinventing the comic book, it set off legal battles and conversations over censorship, brought attention to cartoonists as artists, and set an example for generations of alternative comics creators…” (Dana Jennings - The New York Times)

“Without a doubt one of the most influential titles in comics and comix history... A fantastic collection, and equally fantastic packaging. ... Zapdefinitely is an important staple in the history of comics, and this ultimate collection from Fantagraphics is an ultimate treasure trove to be enjoyed by new generations to come.” (Cameron Hatheway - Bleeding Cool)

“This mammoth edition offers the ideal opportunity to examine the way the periodical evolved, not only in terms of the interaction among its artists but also in terms of subject and form. ...[T]he sixteen issues, as well as a seventeenth that was previously unpublished, are reproduced over four volumes on a thick paper stock and at slightly larger than full size, and have been scanned from negatives. Simply put, they look fantastic.” (Nicole Rudick - The Comics Journal)

“Is it possible for something to be too good? If so, this deluxe set of complete Zap Comix might just be it. This is the most important comics collection to be released in years… This set is worth every penny of its price tag.” (Benn Ray - Largehearted Boy)

“…Zap Comix [is] a top five comic book series in terms of historical importance and a top 10 comic book series in terms of artistic significance.” (Tom Spurgeon - The Comics Reporter)

A few others have written good reviews of this boxed set, so I don't feel a need to replicate their viewpoints. I bought this for $450 and believe it is a good value for what is received. And speaking of receiving, the shipping package alone was exceptional. I received a mint set enclosed in its slipcase; enclosed within another well-crafted corrugated box with a cool Zap logo, enclosed within another box to protect that branded box...which was then enclosed within yet another box for extra safety. So even the box with the Zap logo arrived in mint condition.

I've read Grafdog's post that expressed outrage at the price of the boxed set and said the contents could be acquired for $50 by buying the individual comic books. Well, good luck with that! Just for this review, I went to eBay and tried to price the cheapest possible full run of Zap Comix. Including Zam, it would've cost me well over $200 including shipping for very used copies AND that didn't even include Zap #14 or #15, because none of the 250+ listings included even one of those. No matter where you shop, it would take a lot of money and quite a bit of time to buy them all.

And of course, you still wouldn't get the extraordinary extra content in this set. The Zap #16 (the 17th issue) alone was worth quite a lot to me, but all of the other articles and the deluxe portfolio of Zap covers were quite a perk. Not to mention the generous bonus artwork and oversized printing of all of the comics, which, for fans of these great comix legends, is underground nirvana.

Now, you could wait until Fantagraphics issues the second edition of this set, which will be cheaper. But how much cheaper will it be (and who knows when it will come out)? We know for sure it won't have the portfolio of all the Zap covers on acid-free, fine-art paper with archival-quality inks. The other five books will probably be printed in hardcover and softcover. I'm guessing $40-50 each for the hardcovers and $25-30 each for the softcovers. So it's still probably gonna cost you $250 to match the hardcover quality, and you'll miss out on all the perks of having the first edition. It might be worth it to wait for the softcovers if you don't mind just having a nice compilation of these revolutionary comics.

But for me, I'm very happy to have taken the plunge and forked out the money. I already have all the individual comic books, but this box set is an historically important first edition. I make decent money and live rather frugally in a cheap 2-bedroom apartment, but I still don't have a lot of money to throw around. But in the back of my mind, I considered this box set to be an investment as well, since I doubt we'll see these much cheaper than $400 on the secondary market and they'll probably rise slightly in value over the years.

This box set will give me joy every time I carefully extract a volume out of its slipcase. I know I'll never regret making this purchase, and I don't think you will either.

ZAP was always a masterwork, now it's presented like one.
By Mitch Berger
I bought my first Zap Comix in New York's Greenwich Village, when I was 13. It was my first encounter with the work of Robert Crumb. I was hooked. I always liked comics, but after that, they became a passion. 45 years later, I'm almost embarrassed that I can afford this sumptuous collection (or to be more exact, that there was room in the family budget for my wife to give it to me for my birthday). How far from that black and white, two-color-covered comic this collection is. Instead of cheap pulp paper, it's presented in larger than original format, on brilliant white, heavy-weight stock that will withstand the test of time. The color cover plates presented as a separate portfolio are stunning. The only knock on the format is the same for all collected - format editions. Reading a multi-issue bound volume does not have the same feel as reading the original comic. But maybe that "feel" is as elusive as trying to recreate your first kiss. Because this collection is probably too pricey for most libraries, when I die, that's where my copy is going to go. The revolution lives!

The Masterpiece of Underground Comics
By R. Collofello
If you're reading this, you probably know about Zap Comix. There may have been a few underground comics which came out earlier than Zap, but Zap is the one that really got the ball rolling. The grand-daddy of them all. And now Fantagraphics has published the Holy Grail for the underground comix collector. The Complete Zap Comix boxed set contains four volumes which reprint the entire series, a fifth volume which features the history of Zap as told by the creators themselves, biographies of each of the creators and lots of photos and art, including fold-outs of all the Zap wrap-around covers, plus a beautiful portfolio of all the Zap covers housed in a sturdy box of its own. They could not have done a better job collecting this seminal and historic series. Sure, the price is high, but if you're a fan of Crumb, Wilson, Shelton, Spain, Moscoso, Griffin, Williams or underground comics in general, you're going to love this. Keep in mind that the subject matter is not for children, and some people may find some of it offensive, but as published it was intended to be read as satire without the constraints of the comic book industry. As for me, I will treasure this set for years to come and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

WRITING FOR THEIR LIVES: Death Row USAFrom University of Illinois Press

Going well beyond graphic descriptions of death row’s madness and suicide-inducing realities, Writing for Their Lives offers powerful, compassionate, and harrowing accounts of prisoners rediscovering the value of life from within the brutality and boredom of the row. Editor Marie Mulvey-Roberts brings together the writings of prisoners (many of whom are also prize-winning authors) and the words of those who work in the field of capital punishment, whose roles have included defense attorney, prison psychiatrist, chaplain and warden, spiritual advisor, abolitionist and executioner, as well as a Nobel Prize nominee and a murder victim family member. The material is presented through articles, journal extracts, letters, short stories, and poems.

Exposing little-known facts about the five modes of execution practiced in the United States today, Writing for Their Lives documents the progress of life on death row from a capital trial to execution and beyond, through the testimony of the prisoners themselves as well as those who watch, listen, and write to them. What emerges are stories of the survival of the human spirit under even the most unimaginable circumstances, and the ways in which some prisoners find penitence and peace in the most unlikely surroundings. In spite of the uniformity of their prison life and its nearly inevitable conclusion, prisoners able to read and write letters are shown to retain and develop their individuality and humanity as their letters become poems and stories.

Writing for Their Lives serves ultimately as an affirmation of the value of life and provides bountiful evidence that when a state executes a prisoner, it takes a life that still had something to give. This edition features an introduction by the editor as well as a foreword by Jan Arriens. Royalties from this volume are donated to the legal charity Amicus, which assists in capital defense in the United States.

Review
"The madness of Death Row in the USA is described in graphic detail in this collection of testimonies, short stories, and poems. . . . Most do not question either their guilt or their fate, accepting their lot with resignation. Very few books have the power to change the world. This book is unlikely to be the exception. And for that we should all be very sorry indeed." Tribune

“Nobody who reads this book will put it down unaffected. . . . Mulvey-Roberts has drawn together an astonishing collection of writings and speeches which will shock, shake and warn. . . . A powerful tool to help contribute to the sentimentality against the punishment. She has displayed that the pen is mightier than the sword.”--Amicus Journal
