Worth waiting for! A MUST-own!

I'm a former model who didn't have a clue about how I looked, until I read this book. Today, my copy may be falling apart from frequent use, but it's the single most-important book to read and understand when you're trying to look your best. Nobody else explains how important it is, to look like YOU. Forget trying to conceal your "faults," Kibbe shows you how they're really your assets! Yes, some of the advice is dated (1980s) but the essence of what Kibbe says is timeless. This book is a unique wake-up to what WORKS.

The Best One Out There

I wasted years trying on clothes thinking they looked bad on me because I was too fat. Turns out it was the clothing, not me. Side note: even if you are over or under weight, it will not change your best style of clothing. Whatever type you are, is what type you are, whether you are fat or thin, it will work.

The book will tell you which fabrics work best for your body type, which cuts, what kind of fit, what kind of prints, what kind of jewelry (and what size), there's even a little on make up and hair.

You will find out details like what kind of pant leg works for you - straight, tapered, cropped, etc., whether your type looks better in flared skirts, straight skirts, minis or whatever. Whether your body type is better suited to mix and match styles, coordinated sets, or something else. He's specific and you'll notice and learn things right away.

He demolishes damaging rules. There is nothing having to do with minimizing flaws. Nothing like 'wear this so your hips look smaller...' It's more of a you're all that, here's how to bring all that OUT, and suddenly, you look instantly gorgeous.

I bought a jacket in a style he suggested. I tried it on, and saw an instant transformation in the mirror, like I'd never seen before. I was hooked.

The cons are it's outdated. It was written in the eighties, and needs updating. The before and afters, although effective, are in 80s clothing. It doesn't change what styles look best on you, it just makes it hard to see contemporary examples.

Also, I had trouble figuring out which type I was. Others might not have that problem.

If he wrote another book, or updated this one, I would buy it in a second. I wish he would. I don't even know if he's still alive. I googled and everything, but found nothing.

Teachers beware

Teachers beware...my students love these books, however the quality of how they are made is simply horrendous. Started falling apart within two weeks of use. Not constructed for classroom use.

We love Bad Kitty

Happy Birthday, Bad Kitty just arrived this afternoon. Although it is a children's book, it is very funny for adults, too, and my husband and I read it over each others' shoulders after work and had a much needed laugh. Especially on page 140.

Yes, it has over 140 pages, but they are short, and it took us only about 10 minutes to read silently. We haven't finished reading it to our daughter yet, but I am guessing it would take about 45 minutes to read aloud, or maybe longer if you can't stop laughing.

There are informative facts about cats in the book, such as their crepuscular nature (not many kids' books use that word), how cat's claws grow, and why they shouldn't eat chocolate.

The book is long enough, and the vocabulary complex enough, that one might wonder if kids would like it. The answer is yes. Our 5-year-old daughter loves all four Bad Kitty books, both the long and the short ones, and finds them hilarious. I asked her why, and she said it was the biting and destruction. She also likes the illustrations and the stories.

For those who read the previous Bad Kitty books, it didn't seem as wordy as Bad Kitty Gets a Bath. Also, although the alphabet makes a triumphant return in the early pages, it is mostly a story, not an alphabet book. For those who haven't read the previous books, give them a try!

My 1st Grader purchased this book at the Book Fair and I really thought this was going to be a waste of time and money (the title and cover really didn't do it for me). But, my kid insisted that her teacher had it in their class library and that it would be a fun book. To my surprise, I really enjoyed reading this book with both of my kids (I also have a third grader). It is especially entertaining because we have a cat similar to Bad Kitty. The illustrations and layout, combine story, comic book, and interesting facts into one place, so there is even something for adults to learn. This is also one of the few books that does justice for both of my kids and they even read and laugh together with this one, and it doesn't even need stickers. If your family has a cat, kids will notice the similarities too, so I would really recommmend purchasing it. Plus, as an adult it is a little more enjoyable to follow.

I loved the book

I loved the book. It was very interesting to know what happened to him. I have been a huge fan of Westlife since 2002 but after they went separate ways there was a period of time when I did not know anything about them so when I knew all the trouble Shane went through I could not believe it. Reading this book made me realize that like any other human in this planet they had issues, difficult situations and just because they are pop stars does not mean they are perfect or have the perfect life. I admire what Shane wanted to do for his community. It sure went wrong but I think he was brave enough because he never tried to avoid his responsabilities. A very honest book. I like the way he tells the story and how much we loved and still loves Westlife and his relationship with his wife and kids, I think that played a huge part on how he survived to all those things. I cannot image how stressful it was for him to know he owned all that money and still had to go and work and smile for us his fans and everything. Its just amazing. For those who are fans and for those who are not, this book is a clear example of perserverance, hard work, family, love, and that even if we make mistakes in life, we all always have a second chance to make it right, to do it better.

Grade 4-7-- The Volnik family inherits a rundown old castle on an island off Scotland and visits their new property. After returning home, 12-year-old Emily and 10-year-old Jessup notice strange things happening. Their detective work eventually discloses the cause--a mischievous boggart has accidentally become trapped in a piece of furniture the family shipped home to Canada. Unfortunately, no adults believe them. The children claim innocence on Halloween night as pieces of furniture fly through the air and a bucket of water soaks their mother. Eventually, the boggart's pranks begin to cause serious problems; he becomes intrigued with the power of electricity, and causes a traffic accident that lands Emily in the hospital. Finally, he learns to communicate with the children by computer, causing the message-- "I want to go to my own country"--to appear in Gaelic on Jessup's screen. When he gets trapped in a black hole in a computer space-adventure game, the youngsters devise a daring, risky, and ultimately successful plan to help the boggart return home. The novel is fleshed out with numerous, vividly realized secondary characters, including various actors at the Chervil Playhouse, where Mr. Volnik is artistic director, as well as the novel's true villain, Dr. Stigmore, a psychiatrist and a parapsychology scholar who insists that Emily is a troubled adolescent in need of hospitalization. My son needed this book for a school project & wasn't really happy about being "forced" to read. However, this book captured his interest quickly, and he really ended up enjoying it.

Susan Cooper is best known for her five-part "The Dark is Rising" series, a sequence of fantasy novels that any self-respecting lover of fantasy should have on their bookshelf. Among her lesser known works is the time-slip adventure "King of Shadows", a picture book trilogy based on Celtic legends, and two stories chronicling the doings of a Scottish boggart: "The Boggart" and its sequel "The Boggart and the Monster".

In the Western Highlands of Scotland lives a mysterious and mischievous spirit known as a boggart. Living at the ancient Castle Keep (but often moving about the countryside), the creature of Wild Magic delights in the confusion and amusement that its daily tricks create. But when the elderly Duncan MacDevon dies in his sleep, the inheritance of the castle falls to his great-nephew Robert Volnik and his family living in Toronto, Canada.

The Volnik children are twelve-year old Emily and nine-year old computer-genius Jessup, who are surprised and delighted at the prospect at a holiday in Scotland. Their visit involves meeting Tommy Cameron (who secretly knows all about the boggart), seal-watching, sight-seeing and rationalising the strange occurrences at the Keep. As the holiday draws to a close each sibling is promised one bit of furniture each before the castle is sold: and Emily chooses a beautiful old writing desk. Unbeknownst to all, it is here that the boggart has curled itself up to slumber, and ends up travelling with them to Toronto.

The collision of the modern world and Wild Magic brings exactly what you'd expect: havoc. Exploring the technological wonders of this new world whilst keeping to its mandate of mischief making, the boggart eventually causes some rather dangerous mischief. The Volnik family don't know what to make of the surge in bad luck and strange phenomena, but eventually the children stumble to the idea of a boggart thanks to the wisdom of their father's theatre crew. Now their only concern is how to return the homesick boggart back to his rightful home: magic has long since seeped from the world, so perhaps a technological solution can be found...

"The Boggart" is a beautifully written, thoughtful and interesting book, taking a unique premise and exploring it in both a contemporary and more old-fashioned setting. Cooper is wonderful at describing countryside, circumstances and human reactions to both the mundane and the supernatural. Poignancy is also her speciality; witness a scene in which a grieving boggart affects the sleep of the entire community, who experience the shared dream of an ancient funeral. It's both eerie and poetic.

However, Cooper is on less firmer ground when she reaches Toronto. Although the boggart reacts to the change in scenery amusingly, and the chaos that it creates carries a somewhat darker edge to it, she also introduces several characters and situations that are not dealt with in a particular satisfactory manner: such as Jessup's groups of friends who (with the exception of Barry) have no real place in the story, and the character of Doctor Stigmore. He witnesses some of the boggart's behaviour and believes that it is Emily's doing through psychokinesis; he begins to harass the family and notifies a television show, but both of these plot threads are left hanging, with no resolution at all as to what happens.

One thing I did appreciate was how this story fits in nicely with "The Dark is Rising" sequence, where Cooper goes into more detail on the nature of Wild Magic. Although there is no mention of Old Ones or any other components of that series, "The Boggart" does fit into the `literary world' that she created there. The kids are interesting and realistic, the parents sympathetic and delightfully eccentric, and the Boggart is a character that shines throughout the book; a true creature of wild and untamed magic.

Long before J. K. Rowling gave us the spooky Boggarts that inhabit dark places and take the form of your darkest fears, Susan Cooper brought us this spritely, loveable, intriguing figure of Scottish legend. Look out for its sequel "The Boggart and the Monster".

Solid fantasy

Susan Cooper is best known for The Dark is Rising Sequence, a mix of modern fantasy, folklore and Arthurian legend. In "The Boggart" she goes into related but different territory, loosing an ancient Scottish spirit on a modern family. Often cute and very interestingly written.
The boggart has lived in a decayed Scottish castle for centuries, making harmless mischief and shapeshifting into different forms. But when the elderly caretaker dies, the castle is inherited by the Volnik family, modern Canadians who don't know about the boggart. They arrive in Scotland to check out their rather decrepit property; the boggart decides to take a nap inside a rolltop desk... right before the desk is shipped back to Toronto.
When the desk arrives, the boggart makes the most of his situation by wreaking havoc with the electricity, furniture, non-Scottish foods like pizza, and eventually with traffic. His tricks, though not malicious, can quickly spin out of control and become dangerous. But eventually he wants to go home, communicating with Emily and Jess through the computer. Unfortunately, it's not so easy to get a boggart back to Scotland -- especially when the adults believe the boggart is nonexistant, and an obnoxious parapsychologist is sniffing around.
Until relatively recently, few people knew about the mythical boggart (similar to the bogle). Cooper saves this book from being a typical story of a mythical creature wreaking havoc in the real world by using a little-known Celtic spirit; the result is that the boggart is charming and likable, almost childlike in its mischief, delight over electricity, and quickly-forgotten emotions. The best parts of the book are the ones from the boggart's point of view, such as its memory of a Scottish chieftain who died long ago.
"The Boggart" is a slightly less sparkling book than the "Dark is Rising" books, mostly because her prose is plainer and less detailed here. It only really blossoms when we head to Scotland, the sort of ancient atmospheric surroundings that Cooper seems most comfortable writing.
The boggart, the star, is likably mischievous; Cooper manages to make it inhuman at the same time. It never thinks or acts like a human. Emily and Jessup are likable characters, with distinct personalities. Supporting characters like the parents or the actors are well-fleshed out, never acting like idiots if they don't know about the boggart.
A unique mix of folklore and modern technology. This book could have been so very mediocre, but instead it's a funny, intriguing fantasy. Recommended.

About the Author

Steven Seidman is Professor of Sociology at State University of New York at Albany. Tumultuous politics power the plot, and several sections are harrowing, particularly passages depicting the savage butchering of Olanna and Kainene's relatives. But this dramatic, intelligent epic has its lush and sultry side as well: rebellious Olanna is the mistress of Odenigbo, a university professor brimming with anticolonial zeal; business-minded Kainene takes as her lover fair-haired, blue-eyed Richard, a British expatriate come to Nigeria to write a book about Igbo-Ukwu art—and whose relationship with Kainene nearly ruptures when he spends one drunken night with Olanna. This is a transcendent novel of many descriptive triumphs, most notably its depiction of the impact of war's brutalities on peasants and intellectuals alike. Based loosely on political events in nineteen-sixties Nigeria, this novel focusses on two wealthy Igbo sisters, Olanna and Kainene, who drift apart as the newly independent nation struggles to remain unified. Olanna falls for an imperious academic whose political convictions mask his personal weaknesses; meanwhile, Kainene becomes involved with a shy, studious British expat. After a series of massacres targeting the Igbo people, the carefully genteel world of the two couples disintegrates. Adichie indicts the outside world for its indifference and probes the arrogance and ignorance that perpetuated the conflict. Yet this is no polemic. The characters and landscape are vividly painted, and details are often used to heartbreaking effect: soldiers, waiting to be armed, clutch sticks carved into the shape of rifles; an Igbo mother, in flight from a massacre, carries her daughter's severed head, the hair lovingly braided.

Drawing on her family's experience and Nigeria's history a decade before her birth, Adichie has written an ambitious, astonishing novel that succeeds on all levels. In her exploration of ethnic, religious, and class prejudices and genocide, Adichie focuses on the personal experiences of a few memorable individuals experiencing the drama of the conflict and the new nation. Her manipulation of point of view and time, from the years before and during the war, adds depth and perspective to her timely novel as secessionist tensions in the former Biafra persist.

Heartbreaking portrait of hope in the face of hopelessness

I went into this novel with zero expectations or even knowledge of the subject matter. I discovered Adichie through her snippet in Beyonce's "****Flawless", and eventually found a couple of her TED talks and thought that her ideas on storytelling and the importance of perspective were unique in a way that I never considered.

"Half of a Yellow Sun" will challenge you. It will make you question what love means, how to survive through both spirit and body. It emphasizes redemption, the unbreakable bonds of family, of sisterhood. But most importantly it will shatter your heart into a million reflective shards that force you to examine your own life. It will teach you the history of Biafra, a nation of people who would not go quietly into that night even as they were being relentlessly starved and bombed. It will make you fall in love with its characters who are all too real, with lives that are too fully fleshed out.

Read this, let it become a part of you...

This is an amazing novel explaining life in Nigeria during the civil war when the nation broke into two parts, one being Biafra. It contrasts the views of those who favored independence vs those who wanted the nation to stay as it was, and the horrific role the U.S. and Britain played in this conflict. It also contrasts the lives of people living in the bush with those living cities, and how both suffered terribly. Twin sisters are at the center of the novel, and they represent the nation torn asunder as their lives lead them in different directions, further apart yet always connected. They, and their country, are each half of a yellow sun.

I read Americanah first , now i see why...

The reviews for Americanah were so harsh (even though I still love Americanah). This book is a classic on so many levels. It should be read in all freshmen level literature or African studies classes. This book is eye opening to the struggle Nigeria faced soon after its independence from the United Kingdom in the late 1960's. The richness of the character development throughout the novel made me personally attached to each character. A beautiful fictional depiction based on historical accounts and research , this is a must read!!!!!!

A mix of information

The first part of this book contains a mix of 8 "strange" (as the title suggests) stories. The stories are an eclectic assortment of ghost tales and legend but all of them will most likely seem strange to the Western mind. Individually, the stories seem confusing, perhaps even without point, but take them as a whole and they begin to paint a picture. They lend the reader a strong sense of the Eastern mind. It is really, quite a lovely collection.

The second part of this book, contains a collection of three "essays", if you will, on insects. In particular, a sampling of insects which hold some place within Japan's culture or customs - butterflies, mosquitos and ants are covered here. To my mind, this is an unfortunate departure from the first half of the book's legends and tales. The information will likely seem a bit dry as Lafcadio Hearn (LH) hails from a different time and to many modern minds, I would think the words of his essays may seem rambling. Nonetheless, they are interesting in and of themselves for the information within. If I were to truly pick apart the fine particulars of the two subject matters, I could surely list some fine argument here as to why they are brought together as one, but in the end, the contrast is greater than the benefit. I find they cause quite some disharmony when brought together.

Two last notes for this e-book version: 1) there may be some off-putting words to the modern mind in this book's introduction, which LH had written in January of 1904, in the earliest hours of the Russo-Japanese War. For example, LH references Japanese soldiers on their war boats as "little men", etc. If you can forgive these words as those from a different time, the meat of this book will be your reward, and 2) for those that appreciate additional information, endnotes are included at the end of each tale.

Lafcadio Hearn is well enough known to both Japanese and Westerners alike, and well enough respected by both for his translations of Japanese tales that it would seem almost criminal for a Western student of things Japanese, to completely ignore his works. This book and any of his compilations of Japanese ghost stories and legends are highly recommended.

Excellent collection of old Japanese Stories of the supernatural! Stories of ghosts, demons, goblins, and other creatures of the supernatural. Japan has a rich history of Yokai which are creatures of the supernatural. In Shinto tradition everything has Kami or spirit in it, so anything can develop into supernatural beings of good, evil, or just a neutral spirit being. Fascinating reading!

Cytogenetic study is performed in order to diagnose certain genetic disorders such as; congenital birth defects, mental retardation, growth and developmental delay, defects of sexual development, ambiguous genitalia, congenital defects, abnormal facial features, infertility, multiple miscarriages, amenorrhea, autism, malignancies and hematological disorders, early embryonic death, and gene mutations among others. These can be identified by chromosomal analysis and molecular cytogenetic techniques such as Fluorescent in Situ Hybridization (FISH) and Microarray, which have enormously expanded in recent years.

About the Author
I have been working as a laboratory technician for 30 years: 21 years as a biochemistry laboratory technician and 10 years as a genetics laboratory technician. I am greatful to have had the opportunity to gain experience through working with a team of consultants in cytogenetic and molecular science and with professional laboratory technicians. I have collected basic information to compose a handbook, focusing on the cytogenetic laboratory. I was able to carry out this task by: - My experience as a genetic laboratory technician specialist for 10 years; - Using resources from various genetic based textbooks and articles; - Using information gathered from attending various genetic related conferences. Throughout my employment as a genetics laboratory technician, I was constantly asked by fellow workers, friends, family, and physicians, to explain what my job entails. As a result, the handbook was composed with two categories of readers in mind: the chief audience being the cytogenetics laboratory workers, who in addition to possessing the technical skills for chromosomal analysis, should understand the theoretical basis of clinical cytogenetics and be aware of the practical implications of their work; the second group targeting people with limited background in genetics. With genetics being such a power topic, my goal is to make this handbook a valuable resource for all levels of students and professionals interested in genetics. This handbook serves as an excellent reference for genetic academicians and enthusiasts. It is also an easy introductory guide for those with limited knowledge in cytogenetics and chromosomes.
