Clear and comprehensive

This book is great: a lucid and entertaining account of the United Nations. It's impressive that Fasulo is able to explain the functionings of such a large (and some would argue convoluted) organization with such clarity. The text is spry, and it's clear that the author has had a lot of experience as an independent chronicler of the organization. The text covers the history of the United Nations as well as recent and relevant topics such as climate change and the election of Barack Obama. The numerous candid accounts from diplomats, observers, supporters, and critics alike make you really feel like you are an "insider." A very fresh and smart book.

Required Reading for Anybody BEFORE they express an opinion on the United Nations.

Bought this as a recommended reading item for a political science class in International Law and Institutions. The author, Linda Fasulo, may be familiar to many as one of National Public Radio's correspondent to the UN, and she does a good job of explaining what the UN is, and what it is NOT.

Many Americans have strong feelings about the United Nations, but all too few of them really understand its charter and purpose, its organization, the rules under which it operates, and its constraints. This concise, well-written introduction should be required reading for anybody who decides to comment on the UN.

Interesting Insight to the World Body

Author Linda Fasulo has delivered a very interesting insider's story to how the United Nations operates and some of the key people within the world body. I have not read her earlier version of this book, however this second edition covers the workings of the United Nations and looks at how some of the main committees and organs of the UN conduct business and some of the issues that confront the UN in an ever-changing world.

I liked this book because the author delivers a good storyline in an easy, conversational style.

The books gets inside various major areas of the UN like the General Assembly; examining how the General Assembly rapidly expanded, with the continuing addition of new nations of the world. Currently the membership of the UN stands at over 190 nations. The workings of the Security Council and the various world concerns the SC deals with are also discussed; for example discussion and voting in the SC can last something like 10 mins on a resolution, however all the hard talk and negotiation has previously taken place by the members prior to casting their vote.The discussion on the push for expansion of extra 'permanent' seats on the council and also expansion of the number of sitting nations is very interesting.

The personal glimpses of various personalities who work, or who have previously worked for the UN, would also indicate the author has a long experience with working inside the UN headquarters; to be able to relate to some of the issues described in the book and also how those international figures related their story to her.

The book is also an abbreviated history of the UN, tracing its formation in the closing stages of the Second World War and how it has progressed under the previous Secretary-Generals. The author examines the post of the UN Secretary-General and describes some of the challenges the various UN SG's have been confronted with; also covering such stories as the election of a new UN SG after the first term of Boutros-Boutros Ghali; the only UN Secretary-General to have served only one term in office.

The author touches on the reforms the UN has undergone and also the various days of the year the UN has acknowledged in order to promote various world causes; there are almost sixty days in each year that have been held up to recognise various world concerns ranging from recognition of the importance of water on our planet, through a day for teachers and even awareness of the impact on people landmines and unexploded ordnance make.

In summary a well written and carefully laid out book that describes the development of the UN and the various activities and functions it undertakes.The book also examines the possible future of the UN in a world very different from the world in which it was first created. Well done, Linda Fasulo!

About the Author
Herbert Goldenberg was Professor Emeritus of Psychology at California State University, Los Angeles, where he developed and taught classes in family therapy. Together with Irene Goldenberg he was awarded the 2007 American Family Therapy Academy lifetime achievement award for family therapy. He also held membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Family Therapy Academy, and the Family Therapy division of the American Psychological Association. He was also elected fellow in that APA division. The Goldenbergs co-authored another book published by Brooks/Cole, COUNSELING TODAY'S FAMILIES, Fourth Edition.

Irene Goldenberg is Professor Emeritus of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. She served as Associate Chairperson of that department and as Director of Psychological Services for many years, and continues to teach marriage and family therapy courses to psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers there. She currently supervises doctoral students and directs the family therapy program at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Together with Herbert Goldenberg, Dr. Goldenberg was awarded the 2007 American Family Therapy Academy lifetime achievement award for family therapy. She also holds membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Family Therapy Academy, and the Family Therapy division of the American Psychological Association. She has been elected fellow in that APA division. She is co-author of another book published by Brooks/Cole, COUNSELING TODAY'S FAMILIES, Fourth Edition.

i'm in the minority with this one

most of the people in my class had a terrible time doing the reading from this text. i just don't think they liked having to do reading in general. it's dense, don't get me wrong, but it's dense because it's solid information. i honestly feel like i have a grasp of family systems therapy, from structural to strategic, and even transgenerational. i like stuff like this, though, because i like seeing how different theories would explain my dysfunctional family.

The book covers a lot of bases for the newbie. Scott uses his project manager experience to lay out a logical, rationale approach to this business.

The book contains a lot of useful advice based on Scott's experience running a business and research on the business. Examples include how to get started, what to expect, realistic profit calculations, reviews and recommendations of vending machines, where to purchase them, the pros and cons of candy choices, where to purchase candy, etc.

He thinks like a business person and provides the reader with his experiences from the perspective of his successful business.

The book is an excellent read and is highly recommended to anyone thinking of getting into the business or curious about the candy vending machine business.

I thoroughly enjoy this book. Each time I pick it up, I get something new from it. I mostly love that It is written in layman's terms so anyone can understand it from start to finish. In my opinion, it covers all areas from A to Z. It informs of all positives and even of the negatives. The author is highly knowledgeable about the content and has an excellent demeanor as well. I have recently been bouncing the idea around of getting into the vending industry as a way to bring in extra cash flow and possibly an escape for the future. This book really laid out all all the facts for me.... I have decided and will be moving forward with my vending venture!!!

How good is your Spanish ?

Be careful when reading other reviews. When you see that this book is recommended for people who have already taken "a couple of years of Spanish", they must mean four years in high school PLUS a couple of years in college.
The book looks good and the CD is handy, but if your Spanish isn't already pretty good, this book isn't for you. I can carry very basic conversation in Spanish (in the present tense only) and couldn't even understand the first exercise on the CD.
So just beware that if you only had two years of Spanish in HIGH SCHOOL, this book isn't for you. I must sell mine.

Excellent book for a serious student of Spanish

My Spanish tutor here in Oaxaca recommended this book to me. I'm moderately proficient in Spanish, but mostly from having had the opportunity (and need) to speak it. On her recommendation, I started at the beginning, and have been working my way through the explanations and exercizes.

I've found the presentation of grammatical points clear and easily understandable, with a minimum of grammatical jargon and good number of examples.

The exercizes are certainly useful, since I've found that even if I understand a grammatical usage clearly, I need to practice it extensively if I'm going to use it when I'm actually talking with people in Spanish.

My tutor pointed out that the exercizes could be better, especially for more advanced students, if they mixed different usages in the same exercize, rather than simply repeating the same type of sentence again and again. This would make the student think a bit more, and force him or her to recall previously learned forms.

After working my way through the book, I agree with that criticism.

Otherwise, I can warmly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve his or her undertanding of and use of Spanish.
