About the Author

Alan A. A. Donovan is a member of Google’s Go team in New York. He holds computer science degrees from Cambridge and MIT and has been programming in industry since 1996. Since 2005, he has worked at Google on infrastructure projects and was the co-designer of its proprietary build system, Blaze. He has built many libraries and tools for static analysis of Go programs, including oracle, godoc -analysis, eg, and gorename.

Brian W. Kernighan is a professor in the Computer Science Department at Princeton University. He was a member of technical staff in the Computing Science Research Center at Bell Labs from 1969 until 2000, where he worked on languages and tools for Unix. He is the co-author of several books, including The C Programming Language, Second Edition (Prentice Hall, 1988), and The Practice of Programming (Addison-Wesley, 1999).

Thorough coverage; excellent examples; but maybe not essential

TL;DR

If you're looking to buy a comprehensive text on Go, "The Go Programming Language" is an excellent choice. But with so many free e-book introductions to Go, do you really need it? Maybe, but maybe not.

OVERVIEW

The authors "assume that you have programmed in one or more other languages" and thus "won't spell out everything as if for a total beginner". Yet the book weighs in at a hefty 380 pages (over 100 pages more than my venerable 1988 K&R 2nd edition).

Is it better than the free 50-page "Little Go Book", or the free 160-page "Introduction to Programming in Go" or even the freely-available 80-page Go Language Specification itself? Yes, certainly. But is it two or three or four times as good? I don't think so.

So is "The Go Programming Language" worth the cost to read in both dollars *and* time? It depends on how you learn, how much you already know, and whether, for you, the good parts outweigh the bad.

THE GOOD PARTS

Chapter 1 ("Tutorial") sets the stage for much of what is excellent about this book: fabulous examples. Beyond the obligatory "Hello World", it presents a quick look at several simplified "real world" examples, including command line text filtering, image generation/animation, URL fetching and serving a web page.

The rest of the book follows this same pattern. Chapters typically present several different code examples, most of which do real things rather than just consist of toy code. They include exercises (which I didn't do), that would be good for a course or for someone who learns best by doing structured exercises. The examples are enough to serve as a starting "cookbook" for many real-world tasks.

I also found the explanations of struct embedding and composition to be excellent. Some concepts gelled much better for me than they had from other texts and even from my own coding to date. I had the same experience in the chapter on concurrency with channels. I was pleased that things so idiosyncratic to Go were some of the best parts of the book.

THE BAD PARTS

Sadly, the book's coverage of the standard library is haphazard. On the one hand, the many real world code examples gave opportunities to introduce parts of the standard library naturally throughout. Unfortunately, that also means there's no comprehensive coverage of the standard library itself, which is surprising given that it's one of great strengths of the language.

The most glaring example of this ad hoc approach was finding a section on text and HTML templating oddly dropped in at the end of Chapter 4 ("Composite Types"). It was as if they really wanted to cover those packages and -- without a chapter dedicated to the standard library -- had nowhere else to put it.

As mentioned previously, the book is long and rather dense. It's not a quick read. Worse, the authors have a habit of burying important points or cautions in the middle of a wall of text and code examples. The lack of cutesy caution icons or call-out boxes for these tidbits (as would be found in more informally-styled books) really hurts skim-ability.

THE MIXED PARTS

As great as the examples were, I found some aspects disturbing. First, in some cases, implementation details were omitted from the text -- the reader is expected to download the source to see the full example. I would have preferred complete, if less ambitious, examples instead.

In other cases -- particularly in the sections on concurrency -- the examples are presented in a progression of one or more complete "wrong" examples of how not to do things before an example of the "right" way to do things. This approach is a good teaching method, but it adds substantially to the length of the text -- you have to grok a lot more code to parse out the differences between the examples.

The other interesting observation I had was that in many cases, the examples omit error handling for brevity. Since the verbosity of Go code error handling is a frequent criticism of the language, omitting it seemed somehow disingenuous.

SUMMARY

If you have the money and patience and you like deep dives and real, working examples and exercises, this book is an excellent choice. If you prefer to skim or dabble, or just want a handy reference text, there are probably better options.

Excellent book. It did what the others didn't

I tried another Go book, before tossing it aside in favor of this one. Excellent book. It did what the others didn't: it explained "why". Go is a weird language. So if the reasoning behind the decisions is left out, then the language is hard to swallow. But with proper explanation of the reasoning, one can see the wisdom of Go and forgive some of its odd design and syntax decisions.

Only Go book you need to buy

Every programming language has one book that become the de-facto book. C has K&R and other programming languages has their own. This book is for Go what is K&R for C. If you ever want to buy a Go programming language book, this book should be the one. I have been programming in Go from almost an year and I also find some new tricks from the book. Also I use this book as a reference when I need to brush up some concept.

excellent resource

I must say this is one of the best books I have found to teach an introductory course in project management. It is flexible enough to use for both undergraduate and graduate courses. The third edition follows the latest PMBOK Guide, so it's a great resource for anyone planning to take the PMP exam. This book goes beyond just preparing students for an exam by including lots of information on "how" to perform various project management tasks. I really like the way a concept is explained and then an example is provided on how to apply that concept. There are several exercises and team projects to help reinforce student learning. There are also many real-world references showing how organizations do things right and wrong in project management, plus new xkcd cartoons to lighten things up. I applaud the author for self-publishing this third edition after Cengage decided not to update it. Yes, there are dozens of introductory project management books on the market, but this one is comprehensive, easy-to-read, includes a great free Web site with templates, interactive quizzes, Jeopardy-like games, etc., plus the price is right! Why should we make our students spend over $100 on a dry textbook when they can get this one and actually read it for under $60? The new appendices with guides to using Project 2007 and @task (the leading web-based PM software) are excellent. The instructor materials are also outstanding, and the author is very responsive to instructor inputs. I highly recommend this book.

best book for teaching introductory project managment

Disappoints in several areas

I don't normally evaluate a book (especially a 'text book') on aesthetics - but in this instance I will. It's ugly. From poorly designed cover through to textual layout that detracts from the structure of the content rather than enhances it, this is one of the most unappealing books I've seen. However, as most won't be too concerned with this as a problem I won't go into the detailed examples.

Quality: p.246 "Error! Bookmark not defined" How does that end up in a published text? There were proof-readers? Perhaps not. P.319: Question: Which knowledge areas include tasks related to monitoring and controlling? Answer: All of them! Well, not quite.

100 pages of this is related to software usage - not quite value unless you want to use both MS Project and @Task and you have little experience with either.

Questions related to 'Alpha Project Managers' isn't appropriate in a publication of this type. While explained earlier in the publication as related to a single text, the content of metrics is repeated in the book and then the Q&A asks the reader about 'Alpha Project Managers'. I don't think jargon is appropriate.

P.353 - I suppose you can reference Wikipedia if you wish to establish a definition. Nasty for instructors when students start to query the authors ability to do so when they aren't entitled in their own papers.

However, I will be positive and indicate:

This is a readable text (at least at the level of the incremental detail.) It offers a lot of additional online instructor content (of value if you wish to use this text as the basis for a course. Much less so if you don't.)

Eyeopening and thoughtful study on some of Japan's most provocative contemporary media.

Tokyo Cyberpunk is a thought provoking and extremely well researched text that explores not only themes of posthumanism in contemporary Japanese visual culture, but also carefully reveals how these themes are linked in a larger network of ideas and imagery. In addition to intricate implementation of philosophy and critical theory--from Deleuze and Guattari to Donna Haraway, from Nietzsche to Freud--Brown provides thorough descriptions of the film and anime texts with nuanced analysis. To do so, the author takes a "rhizomatic" approach, meaning that he explores the texts in relation to other texts, finding the common ground and compatible ideas in distinct media as they impact and borrow from each other. In this way, Brown reveals meanings in not just individual texts, but ideas between texts: recurrent and developing ideas across cultures and time.

This approach makes the text accessible in two important and distinct ways.

First, Tokyo Cyberpunk will be interesting for readers who have backgrounds in critical theory and philosophy, but are perhaps not familiar with Japanese culture and media (or even world cinema). The very detailed description of plots and accompanying scene analysis allows readers to engage with the applied ideas without a precondition of specific media and cultural literacy. Moreover, since Brown draws on extensive and diverse examples--from 17th century Japanese puppet plays to Fritz Lang's Metropolis, from the films of David Cronenberg to the current hikkikomori phenomenon, from the sculptures and photographs of Hans Bellmer to reinterpretations of the Avalon myth of Arthurian legend--he opens up application of theory to diversity, encouraging the reader to draw from their own arsenal of visual examples, whatever their background. The rhizomatic method prompts readers to also join in and say, "oh, this is also like xyz" from their own experience.

Second, although the seemingly heavy list of notoriously difficult theorists Brown employs (e.g. Deleuze, Nietzsche, Derrida, Descartes) might seem formidable to readers coming to Tokyo Cyberpunk from a background in Japanese pop culture, the author is also careful to use the theory in an approachable way. Inevitably, the book will, and should, attract readers with a primary interest in Japanese film and anime. Although the more theoretical sections of the text are dense, pop culture enthusiasts should not be afraid to take the plunge. Just as Tokyo Cyberpunk encourages academics of the lit crit crowd to explore visual culture, Brown's rhizomatic reading will prompt interest in larger philosophical ideas and thought perhaps previously unknown to the casual fan.

Readers from both camps could also take the rhizomatic path (paths?) as I did and read Tokyo Cyberpunk not just for the ideas and images in the book, but as a jumping off point to explore other texts and ideas beyond, but similar to, the text in their hands.

Informative, Exciting, and Inspiring

After reading this book, I must say that I am extremely impressed with how it was easy to understand, read and stay interested in it. It isn't every day that I find a book like this and find that I am having a very hard time putting it down. It had its rocky parts but even those had extremely interesting and very fascinating information laced throughout them. I can see that with the knowledge of Tokyo cyberpunk, as a genre, one can probably not look at a doll on the shelf of a toy store the same ever again and maybe even not view the technology that we use day in and day out the same as well. Look at our campus, for example: we make everything very technological these days including not handing out syllabi by hand anymore. Instead, professors will simply upload it to the Internet for the students to find. Technology is all around us, in our lives and in some human beings, inside of our bodies (example: pacemakers). Perhaps Professor Brown is right - we all have a little cyborg in all of us.

About the Author
JERRY HEINES, PhD received his PhD in Theoretical High Energy Particle Physics from the University of Connecticut in 1979. During his years as a graduate student he pursued his interest in Martial Arts with the practice of Taekwondo and Judo. He since left the sport of Taekwondo to pursue his interest in Muay Thai primarily training at the Fairtex gyms. He has also worked as a stunt actor in several major television series such as Spencer for Hire by Robert Parker as well as others. As a SAG member, Jerry has also worked as an actor in several major motion pictures. Better known by his opponents in the ring, students and friends as Ahn The Angel Fairtex, Amorndet Ranjanthuek began his training in Muay Thai at the age of 8. He had his first fight at the age of eight as well and by the time he was twelve years old, he had accumulated a sufficient number of wins to be invited to train at the Fairtex Muay Thai gym in Bangplee, Thailand. At the age of fourteen, Mr. Anh had the privilege to fight at Adsorn Stadium where he won the title belt. Later that year, he became the top fighter in Thailand at the age of 14 in the 30kg weight division. Mr. Anh continued to fight for Fairtex Muay Thai, with the name Pon Fairtex, as he trained under Ajarn Apidej Sit-Hirun and Ajarn Monlit Sitpordaeng. Among his major accomplishments was winning by decision, an exciting and close match with the number 1 fighter in Southern Thailand at the time and Rajadamnern Stadium Champion, Mr. Sing Sampan. When Mr. Anh finally retired from the ring, he had 245 professional fights to his credit, fighting twice in one night on numerous occasions.

I have always has an enormous respect for American boxing and Muay Thai (Thai Kickboxing). In my more than 50 years of martial arts study I have been a student and instructor of many combat arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Wrestling, Boxing, Kickboxing, combatives and Police tactics). The first book by these authors was Explosive Muay Thai: Beyond the basics. This is a companion text (Muay Thai Fighting Strategies by Jerry Heines with Kru Amorndet Ranjanthuek) and it covers more advanced material on the Muay Thai fighting art.

This 146 page text is organized into seven areas. They are as follows: The first section explains the value of Muay Thai training, which includes a brief history. The second section provides information on physical training. Diet and nutrition factors are explored in section three. The fourth section has a detailed explanation of the importance of mental training. The fifth section deals with a topic of importance for any combat activity which is training how to be more relaxed while fighting. Section six shows the targets for competition. The final and longest section goes into great detail on Muay Thai sparring.

Though the information in this book can stand alone; nevertheless, if you are seeking a more complete understanding of Muay Thai you should probably read both books by these authors. One last point. When it comes to any psychomotor skill the best results are obtained when you combine the information in the book with actual hands-on training with an instructor.

An Excellent Historical Fiction Thriller

The Harvest Man by Alex Grecian is the fourth in his Scotland Yard’s Murder Squad series and the fourth I have read, each one improves upon the last, and yet I do feel the books can be read independent from each other, however I recommend reading them in order for the maximum effect. The Harvest Man takes place in 1890s London and picks up where The Devil’s Workshop left off, for the most part, Ripper is back, but a second murder is on the loose who is worse than Jack the Ripper, known as the Harvest Man. Inspector Day and his ex-partner Sergeant Hammersmith are currently living very different lives. Inspector Day has new twin babies, in-laws that will not leave, and has been assigned desk duty while his leg injury heals. As for Day’s ex-partner, Hammersmith, he was let go from the Yard, but has not given up his pursuit of Ripper and free from the Yard’s restrictions he strays further outside of the law to find Ripper. As for Inspector Day, he is finally allowed into the field when couples are found dead with their faces carved off by a murderer, dubbed the Harvest Man, he becomes the Yard’s central focus, meanwhile Ripper is playing a cat and mouse game with both Day and Hammersmith and the stakes have never been higher. Of the four books in the series, The Harvest Man is by far my favorite, it is the most suspenseful and the most enjoyable, even with rather grotesque murder scenes, the reader is given a deeper insight into the lives of Day and Hammersmith. Grecian’s writing is in top form, the deeply atmospheric book is rich in historical detail as well as filled with intense plotlines, deplorable murders, intriguing characters, family situations interspersed throughout the book, and the thrill level will keep the reader turning the pages. I would recommend The Harvest Man to anyone who enjoys historical thrillers and especially fans of Grecian’s previous books.

A New Killer in 1890s London

“The Harvest Man” is the fourth in Alex Grecian’s Scotland Yard’s Murder Squad series.

In this outing, the Murder Squad is still reeling from their encounters with Jack the Ripper. Detective Inspector Walter Day is recovering from a leg wound while his partner, Nevil Hammersmith has left Scotland Yard “for his own good” because he can’t let go of his obsession with the Ripper. But they both aren’t prepared for who is skulking around London to join the Ripper in terrorizing 1890s London. The new killer, nicknamed The Harvest Man, uses ether to subdue married couples. He then removes their faces because he knows that beneath their faces he will find his parents.

I agree with the other readers that Grecian does not do a good job of introducing readers new to his series to his two main characters. Trying to figure out the relationship between the players is next to impossible.

For those of you who do not care for very graphic violence should not pick this book up. Grecian’s penchant for graphic violence is not unique to “The Harvest Man.” His previous outing “The Devil’s Workshop” also described the killer’s violence against his victims in detail.

I will have to think long and hard about picking up Grecian’s next book. I prefer my mysteries to be more cerebral, like Louise Penny’s awesome Armand Gamache series and Charles Todd’s excellent Ian Rutledge series.

Alex Grecian's fourth Scotland Yard Murder Squad thriller is as suspenseful and absorbing as its predecessors. You would do well to read the books in order, as each picks up where the previous one leaves off. In "The Harvest Man," Detective Inspector Walter Day once again faces the malevolent Jack the Ripper, who is too clever to be caught by the plodding detectives on his trail. In addition, Day and his colleagues (assisted unofficially by former sergeant Nevil Hammersmith) are trying to apprehend the Harvest Man, a diminutive and deranged man whose psychosis harks back to a tormented childhood.

This powerful work of historical fiction takes place in London in 1890. Day and Hammersmith are still nursing the terrible wounds inflicted on them in "The Devil's Workshop." Still, neither is willing to give up doing what he loves best--bringing killers to justice. Grecian gives his heroes formidable challenges in this outing, and adds an extra dimension by showing how their personal lives have changed. Day is the father of twins, his in-laws have moved in and are trying to control his life, and he is becoming increasingly dependent on alcohol to get through the day. Meanwhile, Nevil has been dismissed from the force and appears more slovenly than ever. Other familiar figures are the forensic specialist, Dr. Kingsley; his talented daughter, Fiona; and Claire, Walter's lovely wife and the mother of their adorable baby daughters.

The author never misses a beat, as he expertly juggles a host of plots and subplots as well as a large cast of characters--villains, innocent victims, witnesses, law enforcement officials, and an underworld figure who provides information about the brutal slaying of three ladies of the night. There is so much going on here that this novel could have easily descended into chaos. Fortunately, Grecian's measured, lucid, and evocative prose; crisp dialogue; and impressive ability to keep his well-constructed story on track mesmerize us and draw us along quickly. We empathize with two youngsters left orphaned by a murderous fiend, and feel sympathy for the lovelorn Fiona, whose admiration for Nevil is unrequited. Furthermore, we wonder whether Claire and Walter can stand up to her overbearing parents, and fret about poor Nevil, who is quickly going through his meager savings.

There is a great deal of gore, counterbalanced by delightfully humorous passages. Grecian uses irony to good effect by inserting the poems of Robert Louis Stevenson's "A Child's Garden of Verses" throughout the narrative, which serve as a commentary and counterpoint to the violent proceedings. "The Harvest Man" is a tour-de-force, and may be Grecian's best installment yet in a series that has become a must-read for fans of police procedurals set in Victorian England.
