About the Author
Michel Wedel (1957) is Professor of Marketing Research at the Department of Economics, University of Groningen, The Netherlands.

Rik Pieters is Professor of Marketing in the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TISEM) of Tilburg University, the Netherlands. He received his PhD in social psychology from the University of Leiden in 1989. Rik believes in interdisciplinary work, and that imagination, persistence and openness to surprise are a person's biggest assets. He has published over 90 articles in marketing, psychology, economics, and statistics. His work has appeared in Journal of Consumer Psychology, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, Management Science, and International Journal of Research in Marketing. He has published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, European Journal of Social Psychology, Emotion, Psychological Science, Journal of Economic Literature. His research concerns attention and memory processes in marketing communication, and the role of emotions in consumer decision making. He has served as Co-Chair of the Association for Consumer Research annual conference, and has co-organized special conferences on visual marketing, social communication, and service marketing and management. He has taught internationally at Pennsylvania State University, University of Innsbruck, Austria, Koc University, Turkey, and the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He has been Strategy Director for National and International clients at the Prad/FCB advertising agency, Amsterdam office. Raucous, uninhibited and proud, Fela was one of Africa's most intriguing personalities, for his controversial public persona as much as for his music. It's difficult to say for what Fela, born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, was best known: his band publicized Afropop in the 1980s; he repeatedly spoke out against unfair politics in Africa and abroad; his life was abundant with drugs and sex. This exhaustive and objective profile, written by a Yale ethnomusicology professor, examines the Nigerian superstar's life and work from 1938 to his death in 1997. Veal traces Fela's roots to the diverse town of Abeokuta, noting the musical influences left by family and community members there. Following a typically mischievous childhood, Fela pursued an education at Trinity College of Music in London. Soon he and his orchestra were touring the U.S. under the name Nigeria 70, developing the new sound of Afropop. Although the tour was not a popular breakthrough, their subsequent return to Nigeria placed them on the budding African music stage. The book goes on to survey Fela's life at home and worldwide, detailing his imprisonment and physical abuse, his performances, his listeners' reactions and his compositions. Fela covered political corruption, mysticism, frustration with Western views on Africa and other significant subjects in his music, all the while continuing a sexually promiscuous life. Veal has taken on the staggering task of portraying a musician/politician/rebel, and he executes it well.

Fela was born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, in 1938 into an upper-middle-class family whose members included several well-known educators and religious figures. In 1958, he was sent to London's Trinity College of Music, where he discovered Charlie Parker and John Coltrane and soon formed his own band, Koola Lobitos. Over the years, he developed a jazz-funk fusion style dubbed Afrobeat. Little known in America, Fela recorded dozens of albums and became an international superstar with a social and political conscience. His blistering attacks on Nigeria's corrupt military government landed him in jail, in exile, and in danger of losing his life. Veal (ethnomusicology, Yale) became interested in Fela nearly 20 years ago as a student at Boston's Berklee College of Music. Extensive notes, a comprehensive bibliography, and a discography reflect the book's scholarly credentials. interesting but doesn't read fluently

This book contains a lot of interesting information concerning Fela Kuti(family background, historical, cultural and political environment) but sometimes I had the distinct feeling I was reading a scientific research report. A little more fluency in writing would have made reading more enjoyable

Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense

A timely exploration of the father of Afro-beat. Veal, who we learn had occasion to play with Fela and spent time at the Shrine, is obviously a fan of the music and his enthusiasm is palpable. Veal's work is distinguished on many levels. As an ethnomusicologist, Veal offers rigorous descriptions and insights into the compositional aspects of Fela's work. We are given the specifics of Fela's innovations and refinements with Afro-beat. Veal locates Fela's accomplishments within the context of its forbears (E.T. Mensah, James Brown, John Coltrane, etc.)and 20th century African/Afrodiaporic music in general. From Nkrumah to Obasanjo, Veal's discussion of Nigerian/African culture and politics is well researched and thoughtful. There are great nuggets of biographical information from Fela's brief feud with Paul McCartney to November 14th, "Fela Day" in Berkeley (go figure). Veal offers a wealth of information on Fela's family and the impact his parents (his mother in particular) had on his musical and political development. We get the blow-by-blow account of Fela's confrontations with the Nigerian authorities (often, as with the Kalakuta Massacre, in harrowing detail). On the critical throretical tip, Veal 'samples' Gilroy, Jameson, Fanon, Spivak (and others), engaging in a extended discussion of Fela's compositions as postcolonial 'texts.' Though at times distractingly academic, Veal is rigorous in his deconstruction of Fela and gender, the "specific symbolic and psychological functions" of strategic historical essentialism, mysticism, etc., avoiding the cheap and oversimplistic assessments that often surround the man (often, as Veal notes, in service of hegemonic notions of "civilization"). There is much I loved about this book: the bits about Fela's "punk" approach, the rejoinder to jazzbo(zos) and their complaints about the lack of technical virtuosity in Fela's playing, the similarities between Fela's work and blaxploitation cinema, the Yoruban (tragic) basis of his music, his later compositions as underrated "African symphonies." Veal isn't afraid to write about Fela's misguided relationship with Professor Hindu, the emptiness of Fela's vaguely anarchic rhetoric as a concrete political agenda (Fela wasn't kidding about his aspirations), the problematics of Fela's lifestyle (too much pot, rampant and unprotected sex) and the effect of his lifestyle on his wives. I would have liked to have seen more on the parallels between Fela's development of Afro-beat and the stylistic exchanges with the J.B.s, and the Afrodiasporic interchanges that led to the development of hip-hop and modern dancehall. More on Dennis Bovell's involvement with Fela and more than passing reference to the Biafran conflict. The passage on Fela's continuing influence (and the intense rediscovery taking place as we speak by a new generation of musicians and music lovers) is all too brief. But these are minor quibbles. Veal has written a marvelous book on a man who was, by turns, confrontational, generous, autocratic, wild, and always brilliant. Essential reading on an essential figure. Long live Fela!

It's about time!

Fela is almost as important as Bob Marley in the world of black music, but no one has really written a serious book about him until now, and Michael Veal's book is an excellent one in my opinion. Sometimes it's a bit academic but it still provides a lot of detail on Fela's entire life, on the music of his entire career, and all of the Nigerian political backgound, which is substantial. I love Fela's music and I knew he was a legend, but I never quite realized how he put his life on the line to make the music he made and say the things he said, and how heavy it became between him and the Nigerian government. And I also never realized how crazy he was - not surprising considering the fact that he was a brilliant (insane?) artist, and also considering how heavy things became as time went on. That this man managed to survive as long as he did and turn out so much great music is nothing short of miraculous! I think the book is an invaluable document of the political and musical legacy of the 1960s as it developed in Africa during the 1970s and 1980s. I learned a lot about Africa, not only musically but culturally and politically too.

Bryan Meyers, CCP, is director of information services for KOA Kampgrounds of America and a senior technical editor for NEWS/400. Bryan has more than 25 years of consulting, programming, and system design experience in the IBM midrange arena. He is the author if RPG IV Jump Start, 2nd edition, published by 29th Street Press.

Dan Riehl is a technical editor for NEWS/400 and president of PowerTech Toolworks, Inc., a Seattle-based firm providing AS/400 technical education and support. Dan also is the editor of Power Tools for the AS/400 and the author of Desktop Guide to AS/400 Programmer's Tools, published by 29th Street Press.

1.1. What CL Is

AS/400 Control Language (CL) is a set of commands that you use to control operations and to request system-related functions on the IBM AS/400 computer. IBM provides CL as an integrated part of the OS/400 operating system, not as a separate product.

As a means of controlling workflow, CL serves purposes comparable to Job Control Language (JCL) on mainframe computers. CL, however, provides much more functionality than JCL. In some respects, CL is similar to the PC-DOS (Disk Operating System) commands you may use on a PC. DOS operations like copying files, redirecting output, and making directories have direct CL counterparts. CL originated on the IBM System/38 computer in the late 1970s and continued as the principal system control language when the AS/400 was introduced in 1988. The AS/400 version of CL provided many enhancements over the S/38 version, including new commands and other added functionality. However, because of similarities between the S/38 and AS/400 versions of CL, many S/38 CL commands and programs can be used on the AS/400, and vice versa.

A single CL statement is called a command. A CL command is the primary means of interacting with the AS/400. Nearly everything the AS/400 does is requested by a command. There are commands to create and delete objects, commands to start programs, a command to power down the system, and even a command to create a command.

You can think of a command as an instruction to the computer to perform a function. For example, the DLTF (Delete File) command instructs the AS/400 to delete a file from the system; this command would be comparable to the DEL command, which is a part of DOS on personal computers.

Most CL commands are supplied by IBM as part of the operating system, but you also can create your own commands, customized to your own installation’s particular needs.

CL, as shipped by IBM, consists of more than 1,000 commands but still maintains a usefulconsistency that makes the language easy to learn and to understand. Most CL commands can be used at least two ways: (1) by typing them individually onto an AS/400 command line, or (2) by grouping them together into a CL program. CL programs typically consist of multiple CL commands that define procedures or operations on the AS/400. By combining multiple commands within a CL program you can automate most AS/400 operations.

You should write CL programs to perform repetitive processing, because CL programs will reduce errors and operator/user intervention. CL also is a natural choice for many utility programs that control or monitor system-related activities on the AS/400. Figure 1.1 lists a few of the many functions that CL can perform.

1.2. What CL Is Not

Although CL is very rich in function, it is not — in the classical sense of the term — considered to be a high-level language (HLL). You would not, for example, write a payroll application using CL exclusively. For such application programming on the AS/400, you would use a combination of CL and a HLL such as RPG or COBOL. You would use CL to implement the system-related procedures and functions of the application and you would use the HLL to perform such operations as screen handling, file updates, and complex business logic. CL is used to manipulate and control the application’s execution environment, generally as a “front end” to the HLL application programs.

Why wouldn’t you use CL exclusively to create a typical business application? Because many functions perform better or are easier to write using a HLL, and CL just cannot do some computer operations. For example, CL programs cannot add or update records in a database file and CL has very limitedprinting capabilities.. CL programs do not support the use of AS/400 subfiles within application displays, nor do they support individual fields in AS/400 program-described files. Database manipulations are limited to reading files and only a single file can be opened for I/O operations in a CL program. These missing pieces in CL make it unsuitable for developing a complete business application.

1.3. Controlling Workflow with CL

CL programs control the workflow of an application by allowing you to create jobstreams, which consist of CL commands to be executed in order. Within a CL program you can alter the order of execution by testing various conditions that may exist during the execution of a job. You can monitor for errors that might occur while running a job and perform corrective actions or abort the job. You can pass values, or parameters, to and from CL programs to make them more flexible and to permit or restrict the execution of blocks of program code. A CL program can incorporate conditional logic and special functions that are not available when you enter individual commands on a command line. You can also test and debug a CL program, just like any HLL program.

CL programs, unlike JCL , are implemented as compiled program objects, rather than interpreted job streams. A CL program is a permanent object on the AS/400, created by compiling a group of CL commands.

Great book for learning CL - even for beginners

This book is great for learning CL. It's easy to read, goes slowly and gets you writing programs in no time. It covers most of the topics you would have to deal with such as submitting jobs and commands as batch jobs, printer and file overrides, error handling, data queues and user defined commands. It even gives tips about how to make your CL code easier to read and using positional parameters so you don't have to type more than you need to.

The book is what I expected and is easy to use for someone with some iseries experience. This book isn't a beginners guide about using the iseries and does not explain how to use your terminal session. It does get you going using PDM and SEU. It does have a section about ILE programming and CL in that context, so it isn't just your old-school CL.

If you need to learn CL, this is a good book to start from.

Best AS400 book so far

I'm so glad I bought this book. It's the best $15 that I've spent at Amazon.com. I bought it used and had some coffee marks in the first few chapters, but boy, this book is great! It also gives you an introduction of the AS/400 (OS/400). I know Windows, VMS, and UNIX, and I'm interested to know the AS400 because the product that I support also runs on the AS/400 platform. I sorted of gotten some ideas here and there but I wanted to learn more. This book is so great! My first AS400 book and I love it. I've ordered a few more other AS400 books together with this one; and have paid a lot more for the others. But this one beat them all! It's a very good book!

A calm introduction to CL on the iSeries

This book was required for my class on CL programming on the iSeries. The author's style of writing is very clean and clear and he walks with you in describing CL programming and how to create some basic functional programs that are likely used in the real world. I like this book because it has many, many examples and talks with you rather than at you. The author understands that you are new to this topic.

I would surely recommend this book to somebody who is new to CL programming on the AS/400 / iSeries. This book will be a great source to have on the edge of my desk.

About the Author

Bruce S. Jansson (MA, University of Chicago and Harvard University; PhD, University of Chicago) is the Driscoll/Clevenger professor of social policy in the School of Social Work at the University of Southern California (USC). He joined the USC faculty in 1973 after working in Michigan as a community organizer and planner for tenant rights. He also has served as the Moses distinguished research professor at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center. His scholarly interests focus on advancing case advocacy and policy advocacy in social work, as well as examining the history and practice of social welfare policy. He invented the term “policy practice” in the 1984 release of The Theory and Practice of Social Policy, which was succeeded by other titles, including Becoming an Effective Policy Advocate (1999, 2003, 2008, 2011, and 2014). Policy practice has since emerged as a recognized intervention, with the Council on Social Work Education now requiring social work schools to teach policy practice.

Probably the best book ever written for men who have erect penis length under 5 inches. Any erect penis under 5 inches is considered small not to be confused with a micro penis (under 2.75 inches erect length). This book is not for men who THINK they are small but the 2% of men with smaller than average penises and of course the curious. As a member of this rare club I have not experienced the kind of rejection or ridicule described in the book I do agree that it does present both physical and psychological challenges. Rarely written about from a first person perspective. Covers the futility of penile enhancement products and exercises that do little or nothing to enhance a small penis size. Surgery can result in a shortened and or deformed penis costing thousands more to correct the damage done! Talks about depression and self acceptance. Some pseudo science regarding a female body size and vagina size but otherwise a factual book.

The one I kept

There aren't enough resources in this domain. Neuropsychological Toxicology is long overdue for an update, having been released in 1995. Several times I've seen promises of a new edition, but none have actually appeared. It's still useful to the practitioner, but getting dated. The three-volume series Neurobehavioral Toxicology seemed more geared to the researcher than the practitioner; the clinically oriented volume appeared to be a rather superficial rehashing of research results without much clinical guidance. There are several other, vastly more expensive books on neurotoxicology that also appear to be research rather than practice oriented.

I finally tried this book and I'm satisfied with it. The organization is like Principles of Neurology. The first section covers background and general issues (e.g., developmental neurotoxicology). The second section centers around syndromes, such as toxin-induced movement disorders. The third section focuses on diagnostic approaches, followed by a lengthy section devoted to different classes of neurotoxins: heavy metals, drugs of use and abuse, solvents, even seafood with neurotoxins are included.

This book appears well-suited for professionals in the neurrosciences who work with cases of toxic exposure, as well as being a suitable textbook for a course in the same matter. For the most part each chapter serves as a jumping-off point rather than a complete summary of knowledge, but each section is heavily referenced so that the reader can easily find relevant material.

About the Author
Dr Sarah Simblet teaches at the University of Oxford, has drawings in national and private collections, including the Royal Academy of Art, London and Ashmolean, Oxford, and has had three solo shows of her large-scale work. Her broadcasting work includes interviews on BBC Radio 4, acting as a consultant for Watchmaker and for Discovery Channel's Art-Science documentaries, while she has also appeared on BBC3 and Channel 4.

Having this book is like having a botany art museum at home.

[[VIDEOID:moY4ROOS7AC1ZT]]Botany for the Artist is a gorgeous reference for plants. The pages are filled with a mix of photographic plant portraits and Sarah Simblet's detailed sketches. Everything's beautifully laid out. The exquisite illustrations in the book are mainly black and white.

As with typical DK books, it's also filled with educational information. Every part of the plant is explored, from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers to the fruits. They are provided with scientific names and also interesting information on how they grow and their functions.

The drawing lessons are short two-page guides at drawing found throughout the book. There are tips on capturing likeness, establishing the composition, adding colours and details. Also included are selected features on Renaissance botany artist.

This is an excellent resource for botany artists. Having this book is like having a botany art museum at home.

Amazing resource!

Amazing resource, breath-taking imagery and photos. Excellent survey of Botany for the artist. This shouldn't be confused with a college level botany reference. This is botany for poets. But it covers the material a botanical illustrator must know without getting mired down.

I do wish they had covered a bit about the frequent confusion over tree identification and the tricky genetics that can baffle botanists as well as laymen. That really isnt much of a gripe to have.
