This National Book Award Finalist is now a major motion picture -- one of the most buzzed-about films at Sundance 2013, starring Shailene Woodley (star of The Fault in our Stars and Divergent) and Miles Teller (star of Whiplash).

SUTTER KEELY. HE’S the guy you want at your party. He’ll get everyone dancing. He’ ll get everyone in your parents’ pool. Okay, so he’s not exactly a shining academic star. He has no plans for college and will probably end up folding men’s shirts for a living. But there are plenty of ladies in town, and with the help of Dean Martin and Seagram’s V.O., life’s pretty fabuloso, actually.

Until the morning he wakes up on a random front lawn, and he meets Aimee. Aimee’s clueless. Aimee is a social disaster. Aimee needs help, and it’s up to the Sutterman to show Aimee a splendiferous time and then let her go
forth and prosper. But Aimee’s not like other girls, and before long he’s in way over his head. For the first time in his life, he has the power to make a difference in someone else’s life—or ruin it forever.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Unlike most high school seniors, Sutter Keely—the narrator of this smart, superbly written novel—is not concerned with the future. Hes the life of the party, and hes interested in the Spectacular Now. In stream of consciousness–style prose, Sutter describes his lurching from one good time to the next: he carries whiskey in a flask, and once its mixed into his 7Up, anything is possible. He will jump into the pool fully clothed, climb up a tree and onto his ex-girlfriends roof or cruise around all hours of the night. Without ever deviating from the voice of the egocentric Sutter, Tharp (Knights of the Hill Country) fully develops all of the ancillary characters, such as socially awkward Aimee, the new girlfriend who tries to plan a future with this quintessential live-for-the-moment guy. Readers will be simultaneously charmed and infuriated by Sutter as his voice holds them in thrall to his all-powerful Now. Ages 14–up. (Nov.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—Sutter Keely, a high school senior, is determined to live in the moment. He eschews planning for the future, intent on letting the good times roll. Sutter's been downing six packs since seventh grade and is rarely without his flask of Seagram's. Despite the heavy drinking and some raunchy sex talk, he is initially a likable character with a fresh and funny voice, but his affability wanes quickly and that voice just doesn't ring true. He meets Aimee when he passes out on her front yard. Sutter isn't really interested at first and only dates her because he considers her a project, someone he can help become less of a social outcast. Along the way, he begins to come off as condescending and egotistical and his sarcasm isn't as comic. It's a well-written book told in first person, but the narration seems much too sophisticated to be believable. He uses phrases like, "I am…sore at heart" and utters phrases like, "the room brimmed with padded chairs." Some of the plot is also disconcerting. As the result of Sutter's drunk driving, Aimee is struck by a car on a highway and suffers only a broken arm. The story ends with Sutter drinking in a bar, assured he's a hero after dumping Aimee, and rejoicing about feeling nothing.—Patricia N. McClune, Conestoga Valley High School Library, Lancaster, PA

From Booklist
All the seniors inSutter Keely’s high school are planning for the future, except for him. The Sutterman is the original party boy, with a perpetual 7-Up and whiskey in his hand and a story to entertain all who will listen. He isa ladies’ man, but he loses interest when the ladies demand that he pay attention to them, instead of himself, or make other unreasonable requests, such as remember dates or call when he promises. But it is Aimee, a social outsider, who gets under his skin and loves him in spite of his flaws. Tharp offers a poignant, funny book about a teen who sees his life as livable only when his senses are dulled by drink and only as fodder for the next joke or story. Lulled into believing he is happy in spite of his father’s abandonment and his mother’s emotional neglect, Sutter is an authentic character, and his unsteadysense of himself,as well as his relationships with his friends, will strike a chord with teen readers. Grades 8-12. --Frances Bradburn

Thanks to the School Library Journal reviewer...

...FOR GIVING AWAY THE ENDING OF THE NOVEL.

Here's a rule for all book reviewers: DO NOT GIVE AWAY THE ENDING TO THE NOVEL. That's something readers may want to discover for themselves!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and, like others, found myself simultaneously entranced and infuriated by Sutter Keely. Sutter is, for all of his faults,a likable person, but the world is moving past him while he's standing still: his best friend Ricky is moving past all of their partying and wild times and into a serious romantic relationship; the other students at school are looking past the "now" and into the future of college and work; even Sutter's own family is moving on in their own ways, while Sutter deludes himself that the Spectacular Now is enough for him.

"Voice" in YA novels is everything, and this novel certainly has that: Sutter Keely is a very familiar character (we all remember "that guy" from high school) and yet is uniquely his own person.

Highly recommended for both teens and adults: this novel is by turns warm, witty, wise, and heartbreaking.

Oh, and one more time: REMOVE THE SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL REVIEW OR ELSE WARN THAT IT SPOILS THE ENDING.

Richie's Picks: THE SPECTACULAR NOW
By N. S.
"Well, darkness has a hunger that's insatiable" -- Emily Saliers

"Forget the dark things. Take a drink and let time wash them away to wherever time washes things away to." -- Sutter Keely

THE SPECTACULAR NOW is such an achingly humor-filled, intensely sad story, that it has taken me a couple of days of processing the emotions it stirred up before being able to talk about Sutter Keely. Having previously included KNIGHTS OF THE HILL COUNTRY (Tharp's previous book for teens) on my Best of 2006 list, I was well aware of the author's abilities, but this second book is Something Else. It is one that absolutely should be added to high school collections and to required reading lists for YA Lit students.

High school senior Sutter Keely is great friends with a long line of ex-girlfriends. He has a superb sense of humor, plays well with his peers, is forever the life of the party, and professes his affinity for embracing the weird. But as his latest relationship crumbles, he asks himself, "Why is it that girls like me so much but never love me." And, of course, as we come to learn, it is the damaged young alcoholic himself, and not the girls, who has the real problem. Or a number of real problems.

But then he has a chance pre-dawn meeting with a girl he's never noticed who is so unlike his partying crowd:

"She jerks back, startled to see me move. 'You're alive,' she says. 'I thought maybe you were dead.'
"I'm like, 'I don't think I'm dead.' But right now I can't exactly be sure of anything. 'Where the hell am I?'
"'You're in the middle of the yard,' she says. 'Do you know someone who lives here?'
"I sit up and look at the house -- an ugly, little, pink brick one with a window air-conditioner unit. 'No, I never saw it before.'
"'Were you in a wreck or something?'
"'Not that I know of, Why? Where's my car?'
"'Is it one of those?' She points toward the street where two cars are parked along the curb on our side and a junky white pickup is parked on the other side. The pickup's engine is idling so I guess it must be hers.
"'No, I drive a Mitsubishi,' I say. 'Jesus, I must have gone to sleep.' I look around, trying to gather my wits a little. A scraggly elm tree hangs over us and you can just see the moon through the branches. There's a rickety lawn chair stationed in the middle of the yard, and two beer cans lie in the grass a couple of feet away. I vaguely remember sitting in that lawn chair at some point, but I don't remember how I got there.
"'So,' she asks. 'You don't know where you left your car?'
"'Let me think for a second," I say, but my head's not really up for thinking. 'No, it's no good. I don't remember where it is. Maybe I parked it at home and just went out for a walk.
"She shakes her head. 'No, I don't think you live in this neighborhood, Sutter.'
"That surprises the hell out of me right there. 'How did you know my name? Were we talking a while ago or something?'
"'We go to the same high school,' she says, but she doesn't say it like I'm an idiot. She has a kind voice, kind eyes. She looks at me like I'm a bird she found with a broken wing."

Fellow senior Aimee Finecky has struggled to create order amidst the chaos that permeates her home life. She sees the path out of town and she has attained the grades necessary to head there. She has created a sanctuary of a bedroom. And then, as she completes her mother's nocturnal paper route alone -- while mom is off to the Indian casino -- she finds her schoolmate Sutter passed out in that front yard. So begins the story of Sutter and Aimee.

"'Oh yeah.' I take a long pull on the martini. 'Childhood was a fantastic country to live in.'"

There is so much more to this tale. For instance, Sutter's observations on the superficiality of the interaction taking place at his married sister's party -- in contrast to what he's experienced in hanging with his friends -- are hysterically funny and incredibly thought provoking. And Sutter's friend Ricky's meditations upon the longing desire for the miraculous, the role of drugs and alcohol in trying to resurrect the miraculous, and the built-in obsolescence that causes such remedies to ultimately fail when they are relied upon for filling the emptiness, are the kind of jaw-dropping amazing introspections that are so rarely developed to such an exquisite degree in young adult literature.

THE SPECTACULAR NOW impacted me so emotionally that I couldn't even think about reading something else for a few days.

"This stage in the life of the buzz is truly fabulous. It's not even a buzz anymore. It's a roar. The world opens up and everything's yours right here, right now. You've probably heard the expression -- All good things must come to an end. Well, this stage in the life of the buzz never heard anything close to that. This stage says, 'I will never end, I am indestructible. I will last fabulously forever.' And, of course, you believe it. To hell with tomorrow. To hell with all problems and barriers. Nothing matters but the Spectacular Now."

Not Really All That Spectacular
By Sherry Knack (She Has A Knack For It)
Another book I came across on Buzz Feeds 14 Books To Read Before They Hit The Big Screen. Full review to come.

It is touted as a coming of age type of story, which to me means that at somepoint in the story the person grows a little or learns a lesson. In that way, I feel like the author/book failed. To me Sutter is pretty much the same guy at the beginning of the book as he is at the end of the book.

The entire book is from Sutter's POV, which I have to admit is different. It is also a good thing. If not for POV and internal thinking, I would only think of him as a shallow, drunk, party boy, who only lives in the moment without ever thinking about the future or the consequences of his actions. Even with his POV these things are true, but you are also able to tell that he is hurting. I would more call this a slice of life type of book.

One day Sutter wakes up on a stranger's lawn with Aimee staring down at him. Sutter decides that Aimee who is a quiet, responsible girl, with her future all planned out, needs to loosen up and stand up for herself. He sets off with his plan to improve Aimee. Not everything goes as planned, but there does seem to be a connection between the two. Too bad we couldn't see what was happening through Aimee's eyes too.

Obviously with this book there is a lot of teen drinking, drugs, sex, and all around bad behavior.

I liked it all right, but did not find it spectacular by any means. I still plan on checking out the movie sometime, but I can already tell there are some definitely differences between the book and the movie.

I don't think I would recommend this book to my friends.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-When 15-year-old Craig Gilner is accepted by a prestigious Manhattan high school, the pressure becomes taxing, and he finds himself battling depression. Partying and drugs don't help. As his illness intensifies, he is aided by his supportive family and perceptive therapist. A prescription for Zoloft improves things, until Craig decides that he is better and stops taking it. In a revitalized state of depression, he calls a suicide-prevention hotline and then checks into a hospital, where the only space available is in the adult psychiatric wing. There, he receives the help he needs, discovers his hidden artistic talents, and connects with the quirky patients who have plenty of problems of their own, including Noelle, a girl his own age. Craig's well-paced narrative, carefully and insightfully detailing his confusing slide and his desperate efforts to get well, is filled with humor and pathos. His thoughts reveal a sensitive teen unsure about sex, friendships, himself, and his future. An almost unbelievable amount of self-realization, including his first two romantic encounters, occurs in the whirlwind five-day hospital stay. However, the book ends on a note of hope, despite Craig's unwise anticipation of a relationship with Noelle. This novel will appeal to readers drawn to Brent Runyon's The Burn Journals (Knopf, 2004), which is another powerful but more extreme look at a likable teen returning from the brink of suicide.-Diane P. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 9-12. When Craig Gilner gets into Manhattan's exclusive Executive Pre-Professional High School, it's the culmination of a year of intense focus and grinding hard work. Now he has to actually attend the school with other equally high-performing students. Oops. And so the unraveling begins, with a depressed Craig spending more time smoking dope and throwing up than studying. Although medication helps his depression, he decides to stop taking it. Soon after, he makes another decision: to commit suicide. A call to a suicide hotline gets him into a psychiatric hospital, where he is finally able to face his demons. Readers must suspend their disbelief big time for this to work. Because the teen psych ward is undergoing renovations, Craig is put in with adults, which provides the narrative with an eccentric cast of characters rather than just similarly screwed-up teens. And in his five days in the hospital, Craig manages to cure his eating disorder, find a girlfriend, realize he wants to be an artist, and solve many of his co-residents' problems, including locating Egyptian music for his roommate, who won't get out of bed. What could he do if he wasn't depressed! But what's terrific about the book is Craig's voice--intimate, real, funny, ironic, and one kids will come closer to hear. Many readers will be familiar with the drugs, the sexual experimentation, the language, and, yes, the depression--or they'll know someone who is. This book offers hope in a package that readers will find enticing, and that's the gift it offers. Ilene Cooper

A Memorable Novel On Clinical Depression Which Will Interest Adults Too
By John Kwok
When I moved back to New York City a decade ago, I was drawn immediately to the pages of the free alternative weekly "The New York Press". Why? Back then it had a terrific stable of eloquent columnists, ranging from Jonathan Ames and Melissa de la Cruz to fellow Brunonian Amy Sohn. But I thought the most remarkable person writing for them was a young high school student, Ned Vizzini, who would soon become a fellow alumnus of our prestigious New York City public high school, Stuyvesant High School, which is of course best known for its Nobel Prize-winning alumni, other distinguished scientists, doctors, engineers and lawyers, legendary Hollywood movie stars like James Cagney and Tim Robbins, and a certain former member of its faculty, one bestselling memoirist by the name of Frank McCourt. Although I haven't been following his subsequent career as diligently as I should, I was quite impressed back then with Vizzini's crisp, clear prose, and fine ear for clever dialogue. All of these are amply present in his latest novel for adolescent kids, "Its Kind Of A Funny Story", which I think will interest many adults too.

Vizzini offers an eloquent, memorable fictional description of teenage clinical depression in his latest novel; one which is the most honest, and truly - on occasion - humorous accounts I have come across. It is also one firmly rooted in reality, since he had suffered from clinical depression too, shortly before writing this novel. Craig Gilner is a new student at a prestigious New York City high school which is a fictionalized, business-oriented version of Stuyvesant. One night he begins thinking of suicide, and ultimately checks himself into the emergency room of his Brooklyn neighborhood hospital. It's the start of an engrossing - and as I have noted before, an occasionally hilarious - journey through the hospital's adult mental ward, where he soon encounters recovering drug addicts and people with multiple personality disorders. Craig does his best trying to retain his sanity while dealing with his fellow patients, the hospital's staff of superb doctors, nurses and other medical attendants, his family, and his small circle of high school buddies. You will find yourself smiling, perhaps laughing, as you read Craig's encounters, which will, of course, end on a triumphant note. Having established himself as one of our finest writers of adolescent fiction, I am truly looking forward to the time when Ned Vizzini joins the ranks of our best adult fiction writers too.

Now I Understand Mental Health
By Ecila
Before I read this book, I bought it for a friend as a birthday gift. About two, three years later, I finally decide to pick it up and read it myself. It was about October when I started and I finished it sometime before December. There was one line in the book that really changed my life. It was Craig was first checked into the hospital and when he's having a discussion with Humble. Humble says something along the lines of how he's afraid of living and not dying. When I read that I really understood what it's like to have a mental health disorder.

The way this book was written can resemble a memoir because Vizzini wrote this book after he was released from a hospital himself. And that's what makes it more realistic for the reader. As a young adult myself who is still in school, active in various extra curriculars, and dealing with relationships, this book is very relatable and shockingly real. This book is a great read for that reason. If you know someone who has a mental health disorder, whether it be depression, DID, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder, you would greatly benefit from this book because you take the time to step inside their mind.

It's Kind of...well...Most Definitely an Amazing Book
By Brian H.
Ned Vizzini, cult author who has been relatively successful although not blown up yet, was depressed. In December of 2005 he had suicidal thoughts and went into his local hospital's recovery program. He was there five days, and it took him a month to write this novel afterwards.

The main character, Craig, is starting to feel the pressures of life. Recently accepted into the most prestigious high school, things start building up, however instead of dealing with them he just keeps stacking his problems in the corner. While he's fallen into some shady friendships and into some pretty heavy pot use, his grades slip and he realizes he's not perfect. The thoughts nearly drive him to suicide, but thank God, he checks into his local hospital instead.

This story aside from some setup, mainly are the chronicles of Craig Gilner's 5 day stay. As he forms friendships with some of the patients he meets a girl, which leads to the development of one of the best and most touching romances I've read in a story since I read Feed about four years ago.

Through depression this narrative shows that there are reasons to live, and should help many teens through rough times. Although it's sad Ned Vizzini had to suffer through those times, it was now for the better since he has written this wonderful work which we can all learn from.

I expect this book to explode on the YA media, even though there are some adult themes (drugs, sex, language, etc.) it's nothing worse than you run into during the average day of life.

Although the book is about 440 pages long, you would never know it. I read this book in a day and a half, and I plan to read it several more times. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Whether you're depressed or not, young or old, that doesn't matter, because this book is about something we all have in common: life.

Good summary and very helpful
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
This book is a good summary of genetics but one will need to read another book in conjunction with this one. It is great for quick reference and will suit students well as a study aid, as the authors give a set of key notes at the beginning of each chapter. The authors avoid any discussion of highly advanced topics, but instead emphasize the raw basics. However, they don't leave out some of the more exciting topics, such as population genetics, cloning, gene therapies, and the human genome project. The order of presentation is logical, with the properties of DNA beginning the book, with Mendel's laws explained based on the genetic code. In addition, this reductionist approach to explaining the biology of organisms is one that is most compatible with the requirements of sequence analysis and algorithms in computational biology. As such, this is a good set of notes for mathematicians who are moving into the area of sequence analysis and need a background in genetics.

Instant Notes in Genetics (Instant Notes) by P. C. Winter
By S. Santiago
The book is very usefull if you use it as reference, but it doesn't explain genetics in general in a complete way, and the fact that its pages are black and white is difficult to consider it a text book for a genetics course.. I would recomended to people who study genetics and know their material well to use it as a quick reference..

brief and concise reference
By loves shoes
As the title suggests, this is not meant to be a textbook of genetics. The basic purpose of this book is to put across key points and concepts in a simple, concise fashion for easy understanding. This book is most useful if you already have some exposure to genetics through classes or more traditional texts.
The strength of this book lies in its clear, brief and logical presentation of topics with good cross referencing. It would be especially useful to students before examinations when reading through lengthy texts or notes is not practical

Blood of Rome: Caratacus is the first novel in the Blood of Rome series. It tells the true story based upon historical fact of one man's fight against the most powerful empire in the known world. Forced to fight against overwhelming odds, in a war he didn't desire, Caratacus defies Rome and halts its charge across the lands of Albion, an Island they call Britannia. The Roman Senate thought that it would be a quick, decisive victory against uncivilised barbarians on the edge of their north-western frontier, they were wrong. This is the story of the invasion of Britannia in AD 43 as it has never been told before.

Blood of Rome: Caratacus by John Salter
By Paul Bennett
This, the debut novel of John Salter, is the story of the legendary Briton Caratacus and his quest to protect his homeland from the Claudian invasion of Britain. Most of the book focuses on the 2nd Augusta Legion under it's Legate Vespasian as he strives to convince the various tribes to acquiesce to Roman rule and order. The author brings to life some very interesting characters both Roman and Briton in this well researched tale. The Britons Caratacus, Adminius and Brenna bring to life the differences of opinion as to whether submission to Rome or the destruction of the invader is the better choice for their home and people. Their motives and emotions are vastly different from each other(I won't say who is of which opinion so as to not reveal a spoiler, though Caratacus' choice is probably well known) and are the heart and soul of the conflict.

As in any good story there are plenty of plot twists especially one towards the end that is very nice yet very nasty and I was taken completely by surprise. The battle scenes are well done, the gore is not overly excessive yet enough so that you get the feel of what it would have been like to be a Roman legionnaire facing a menacing group of frenzied, woad covered warriors. You also get to know what it was like to be an advance scouting party of Roman cavalry from the intense fear to the comradeship of the men involved. I am looking forward to the next volume in this saga as the battle for Britain is far from over and Caractacus is as determined as ever to throw the Romans back into the sea. My rating for this is 3.8 stars.

I enjoyed the story but there were a few issues...
By Jason Frost
I saw `Blood of Rome: Caratacus' on Ben Kane's FaceBook page as he was talking about his Romani Walk charity. I was in the mood for a Roman novel and I trust Ben not to recommend swill, so I decided to give it a shot. I'm glad I did.

Unlike a lot of the Roman books I read, this one is told mainly from the standpoint of the scouts. That was a unique turn. I've always heard from legionaries, slaves, citizens, and Generals, but rarely the scouts. Hearing about combat from their perspective gave me a different perspective.

This premise is one that we've all heard; Caratacus and his audacity to defy the might and power of Rome. This story is told through the eyes of Varro, Veranius, Decimus, Valerius, and Brenna, and it's a Roman story through and through. Right down to the fighting, blood, brutality, loyalty, and a few (not enough) brown-chicken-brown-cow moments.

One of the things John Salter did well to show us how frustrating it was for Rome to keep getting bested by these "barbarians." Hell, I could have told them not to ride through certain areas that were ripe for ambush! Rome is powerful on the field and the Britons are powerful in the trees and forest. Reading about the scouting mission from both sides that ended up with blood and torture are the stuff my dreams are made of.

I also enjoyed how John didn't fall into the trap that so many first time writers do: he didn't spare his main characters. From anything. Matter of fact there is one scene in here that is just... painful. But I was riveted because I just had to find out if he would go there. He did. Oh my goodness he did! I've always had the wish that I could go back in time, reading the adventures in this book only cemented that dream further. John paints a very vivid literature drawing and I enjoyed the trip.

However...

This book is a five-star read but I only gave it four. Why? The editing. I really hate harping on this but new authors MUST get it together. Mistakes happen, yes. But they shouldn't happen frequently. If I catch a mistake then something's wrong. Also, editing mistakes will ruin the flow of a story. I found myself having to reread passages in this story trying to figure things out. And this happened more than once.

Now John did say in his `author's note' that there might be grammatical errors and mistakes, so there is that. But my thing is any mistakes need to be few and far between. Like most indie authors he still pulls down a full-time gig, and maybe that's why I'm a bit more forgiving than I have in the past. Being an indie bookstore bloke myself, I really appreciate the indie authors because I know and understand their struggle. That being said, indie authors must be held to the same standard as major publishing house authors. I don't see Conn Iggulden putting a disclaimer at the end of his books asking us to be forgiving for editing errors, so I don't want to see it from John. Or any other indie author.

Will that deter me from getting his second book, `Blood of Rome - Retribution'? Hell no. I'm slightly anal... not stupid. I can spot talent when I come across it and John has it. I will just trust that his mistakes will go the way of Veranius's... never mind.

A terrific debut novel
By Amazon Customer
This debut novel from John Salter contains elements of everything it takes to entertain - raging battles, murder, treachery, suspense and even love. Ordinarily, historical fiction is not the type of novel I would read but it was recommended by a friend as I was looking for a new genre to read. I was not disappointed!

This book was intelligently written, thought provoking and exceptionally entertaining. I became totally immersed in the characters, both Roman and British. The author has an innate knack of drawing you into the scene where you feel as if you are a participant. I could hear the arrows flying past, smell the damp and mud underfoot and sense the fear that enveloped the warriors before going into battle. I rooted for the good guys and yelled at the bad guys, although at times it was difficult to distinguish between the two, and was shocked at the cunning twist revealed near the end.

The story starts slowly with a bit of Roman history but soon picks up pace once the Romans reach Britannia's shores and fair crackles along until it reaches its blistering climax.

This book deserves five stars for the development of the characters alone and I am eagerly awaiting book two in the Blood of Rome: Caratacus chronicles.
