We're broke and in debt but the wonder is that we can't figure it out to fix it.

I'm 76 years old and have an advanced degree but I had to read Ellen Brown's Web of Debt to learn how ignorant I was. Then I bought her second, companion, book, "From Austerity to Abundance the Public Bank Solution" to learn how we can climb out of the web of Debt. It's a wonderful read; intelligent and persuasive, without being intimidating or pedantic. Ms. Brown's prose is a wonderment; her sentences are readable and clear some of the mental concepts she presents or describes take effort to get one's head around. Mostly I think it's because our heads have been filled with lies through out our lives. The most pervasive lie we "swim in" is our failure to understand the application and implications of "the banker's secret".
I recommend reading The Public Bank... carefully but watch out you may want to start button holing your representatives and shaking them until they're are willing to apply the bankers secret to our debt and governance problems.
When I started these books I didn't sufficiently grasp is the extent to which "control of the purse" is what actually controls governmental policy, including that of deciding to go to war. Also the little matters of feeding the poor, cleaning up our environment, educating our population and providing health care are controlled less by our votes that you ever imagined.
All this Ms. Brown explains and much, much more in The Public Bank Solution; when you settle in to read it be sure to clear your decks as well as unshackle your mind. You'll never see the world the same again. Highly recommended.

The way out of our financial crisis

Ellen's new book presents a strong, well documented, historically rich case for the use of public banking in solving today's economic problems. The Public Banking Solution is an immediately doable way to wrest the power of money creation and the power it bestows away from the irresponsible TBTF Wall Street Banks and return that power to the people in states and local communities - in other words, the 99%.
I have a Harvard MBA, have worked in the financial arena, and studied monetary reform for over 20 years, but I have never come across such a clearly written, easy to understand treatise on the subject. This book should be essential reading for all economist, and students who want to understand what is behind so much of today's world. Be wary, you might get incensed, as I did, as you learn how historically the greed of the few have led to the detriment of the many and the very planet we all exist on.
I highly recommend this book and laud Ellen Brown for her thorough research and clear presentation of a solution we can all, bipartisanly, get behind.

Building a positive alternative to Wall Street's depredations

Wake up, Americans! It is amazing that hardly any Wall Street financial operators have been prosecuted and jailed. Attorney and positive activist Ellen Brown in her "Web of Debt" and now further in "The Public Bank Solution" shows how bankers have been taking advantage of us for several centuries. She details the insider manipulations of the last few years, exposing their roots in modern American history. She shows how 40 percent of countries outside of the USA---including the fast rising Brazil, Russia, India, and China---fund practical development and avoid financial crisis, while Americans, Canadians, British and other Europeans suffer impotence in the face of private bankers' bravado, parasitism, and myth-making. The institutions within which arcane but disastrous rules and practices are bred and citizens bled are exposed in detail from documentation ignored by schools and the media.
Ellen Brown builds on the little-known experience of the bank owned by the state of North Dakota which enabled its citizens and businesses to flourish during the great recession of 2007-the present. Publicly owned banks in many cities and states will direct credit to socially necessary economic developments rather than allowing it to be frozen or misused for enriching Wall Street's barons and gamblers while they freeze the economy. At present a dozen other states and several cities and counties are considering a publicly owned bank of their own.
