About the Author
Dr. Scott Besley is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Finance at the University of South Florida. He earned his DBA and MBA degrees from Florida State University. A well-respected author and instructor, Dr. Besley has published numerous research articles in various academic journals and has co-authored two of the leading textbooks in corporate finance that are used at universities around the world. His research interests include areas of corporate finance, working capital management, governance, and investment anomalies. A frequently requested presenter at professional conferences, Dr. Besley is actively involved in numerous finance and professional organizations. When he is not teaching or pursuing research interests, he is heavily involved in his local community.

Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Soth explains: "While Fashion Magazine has a single photographer-author, it's still a magazine, not a book. So it doesn't follow my usual mode of slow, solitary production. It's collaboration. The ideas for the collaboration were formulated very quickly. I was approached by the folks at the Paris office of Magnum to work on this issue late last year. I immediately said yes. I was a huge fan of the previous two editions (by Martin Parr and Bruce Gilden) and was looking for an excuse to play with fashion . I often say that when I am making a portrait, I'm not 'capturing' the other person. If the photograph documents anything, it is the space between the subject and myself. Something similar is at work with Fashion Magazine. I'm not really comfortable saying I know anything about Paris or its fashion world. And I suspect that most fashionable Parisians know just as little about Minnesota. What is interesting is the space between us. My favorite example of this involves Chanel. In Paris, I photographed Karl Lagerfeld at the Grand Palais. In Minnesota, I photographed a girl with a Chanel shopping bag in front of Sally's Beauty Shop. With this magazine, I'm trying to explore the distance between those two places."
Photographer Alec Soth was born in 1969 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he continues to live and work. He is the recipient of major fellowships from the McKnight and Jerome Foundations, and was awarded the 2003 Santa Fe Prize for Photography. His photographs are represented in major public collections including The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Soth's widely acclaimed first monograph, Sleeping by the Mississippi, was published in 2004, followed by Niagara and Dog Days Bogot� in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Soth is represented by Gagosian Gallery in New York and Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis. He is an associate photographer with Magnum Photos.

Minnesota

The Minnesota section of this book is some of the best Alec Soth portraits published so far. I'm not so much a fan of the Paris section probably because I have no interest in high fashion, but having the Paris section precede the Minnesota section is part of what makes the Minnesota section work. The connection has been made and gives the subjects in Minnesota a quiet, down-to-earth beauty.

Interesting Images - Wouldn't Purchase it twice for that price

I liked the images, they were exceptional. The presentation was also well thought out using a periodical concept.

For the price though I wouldn't buy this again. The cost is around the price of a decent book that will last a few years. This won't with its soft covers and simple spine.

Worth buying

I liked the book because it had a lot of information about all the activities going on for the holiday. Also, the book told about how the more expensive resorts were decorated which I would have missed if I hadn't read the book.

I was disappointed because all the pictures were in black and white instead of colored.

Excellent Disney Christmas Guide

I found this Disney Christmas guide very helpful. We have been to Disney a few times, but never at Christmas. Now, after reading this book, I definitely want to go at Christmas time. The author did an excellent job of highlighting the special Christmas activities, parties, shows, and displays. There are so many things that I want to see, in and out of the parks - especially the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights Display, the Gingerbread displays at the hotels, and the Holidays Around The World - Candlelight Processional! I learned so much from this book and I highly recommend it!

Helps get you in the spirit of the season!

I decided to check out this book after reading another book by this author called "Disney Tips & Secrets: Unlocking the Magic of a Walt Disney World Vacation". This is a great book to get you in the spirit of the holidays- whether or not you're going to Disney this year! Our family is planning a trip to Disney over the next year or so, and after reading this book I really want to go at Christmas! I've always thought it would be too crowded (and expensive!) to go during the holidays, but the author provides some creative ideas for getting around that. The book also lays out everything that's unique to Disney for the holidays and it's filled with beautiful photos showing the park decorations and attractions all decked out for Christmas!

I had never even heard of `Osborne Lights' until I read this book. The pictures and vivid description provided by the author make me really want to check them out! (Certainly puts our family's light display to shame- lol.) All the other Christmas festivities sound like lots of fun too.

If you have even a passing interest in Disney, at Christmas or any other time of year, you really should read this book. Although there are a few other Disney Christmas books out there (including one that's terribly over-priced!) this one is the best of the ones I've seen.

A book that also asks questions

Around the same time that Professor Nasr began publishing works dealing with so called 'Islamic science' this book came out. Filled with illistations it goes through the history of science and technology as they were practiced in the middle east up until the 19th century. It also looks at the contributions made by Muslim/Middle Easter scientists to science in general more interesingly it also asks questions as to why science declined in the 'Muslim world' and compares it with the rise of science in the West.

An exellent book that asks more than a few difficult questions some of which are still awaiting answers.

Easy english, easy to understand and to put in practic

This book take a complete coverage on the EMC subjetc. All topics are well covered as test, regulations, design and troubleshooting. Even if you are not an EMC test enginer I highly recommend to learn something about this task, because some of the non compliance issues, really are setup and test not well done. The EMC test is not as easy to start a program in the PC and create reports, by the contrary there is a lot of science to know what we really are doing, and few EMC test engineers are prepared to do this. The book is 100 per 100 profitable, it has the honor to be next to my prefered ones.
Just find a problem, I am 55 years old, the characters are too small and I can hardly read. A few pages more and very little savings less, would have solved the issue.

Technical part very good, regulatory part Eurocentric.

Well written with a good balance between technical depth and fundamentals. Quite a bit of useful practical information on grounding and cabling. The only warning: the parts on regulatory requirements and measurement standards are written from a Europe/UK point of view, if you are in the US you'll need another book to cover FCC Part 15 and US standards for measurements.

Another hit by Tim. I enjoyed the previous edition of this book. An exellent read to help stay abreast of the changing standards and challenges in the field. While I had no complaint about content - the font size in the in this edition was challenging because of the small type. Otherwise good and reference.

An excellent reference for a Teacher

I am a professional magician. I have used this book on many occasions to teach a magic workshop. The tricks are very well explained and most are very easy to perform. Lots of pictures make this process quick. If you are a beginner in magic, a professional or even a teacher, I highly recommend making this purchase!

How to get over stage fright and still keep your integrity

This book is more than a simple collection of tricks. It's a full introduction to the world of magic. Not only do you discover the secrets behind tricks that you can reproduce without much special equipment, you also get a foundation in the whole art of magic.
Most of the book is, of course, consumed with telling you how to do stuff. The tricks are organized by the venue in which they could best be performed. There are tricks for the office, tricks for restaurants, tricks for parties, and tricks for wherever you carry a pack of cards. The instructions for all the tricks are clear and even humorous. Mr. Pogue is an excellent teacher, able to convey in writing what many couldn't do through speech.
But the book is more than just these tricks. It's also a guide to the performance art of magic itself. Nothing, according to Mr. Pogue, is as important as the panache you can exhibit. And of course he's right. Pogue teaches you that the projection of confidence is, more than anything you do with your hands, responsible for the creation of illusion.
He also gives you a real sense of the history and tradition of magic. There's an introduction to famous magicians and a listing of resources to help you continue your exploration of the craft. I was also impressed to discover that there's an attempt at a "trickography"-something like a bibliography attempting to credit, where possible, the inventors of the included tricks. This trickography goes into some detail about the responsibility that magicians have towards each other, even though there's nothing in the magician's trade which can be copyrighted.
All in all, it's a fine work, well worth your money. Still, it's worth mentioning that the style of trick included here isn't necessarily everyone's idea of "magic". This is simple, sleight-of-hand stuff. It's not, for the most part, stage magic. There are no rabbits drawn from hats nor beautiful assistants sawn in half, here. Of course, to many readers this will be considered a virtue: these tricks can be done anywhere with minimal investment. But if you're hoping to make a career-or at least a paying hobby--of magic, this book is probably just a baby step along the way.

Magic for Dummies is an excellent book for a beginning magician or an intermediate looking for new tricks. There are 100 tricks in this book that will leave your audience floored. It also provides great photos and patter and the format is very easy to read. And it is written in a lighthearted sense and is very funny. It also gives you a glossary of terms, things to say when someone asks you "How did you do that?", places to learn about magic, buy magic stuff, etc.
Bend a regular spoon, make a saltshaker disappear, do a reflex test on a volunteer and always win, keep track of money even when your back is turned, or locate your volunteer's card without even looking at it. Whatever you want to do, pick up Magic for Dummies!
