Myrren's Gift (The Quickening, Book 1), by Fiona McIntosh

For the sake of an imperiled kingdom, the line between "traitor"and "savior" must blur . . . and vanish.

Though barely a teenager, Wyl Thirsk must now assume the role he has been destined for since birth: commander of the Morgravian army -- an awesome responsibility that calls him to the royal palace of the crown prince Celimus. Already a cruel despot who delights in the suffering of others, Celimus enjoys forcing his new general to witness his depraved "entertainments." But a kindness to a condemned witch in her final, agonizing hours earns young Thirsk a miraculous bequest, while inflaming the wrath of his liege lord.

With war looming in the north, Wyl must obey Celimus's treacherous dictates and undertake a suicidal journey to an enemy court -- armed with a mysterious power that could prove both boon and curse. For unless he accepts Myrren's gift, it will surely destroy him . . . and the land he must defend.

From Publishers Weekly
Fantasy fans will welcome Australian author McIntosh's gripping first installment in her Quickening trilogy, a tale of the eternal struggle between good and evil filled with magic, blood and jealousy. When 14-year-old Wyl Thirsk inherits the generalship of the Morgravian legions on his father's early death, he's fortunate to possess both the good habits and wise judgment that have helped the Thirsk family remain commanders of the legions for generations. These virtues will serve him well in his dealings with King Magnus of Morgravia's wayward son, Prince Celimus, whom Wyl is duty-bound to protect. After both boys achieve adulthood, the cruel Celimus orders Wyl to witness the torture and execution of a young woman, Myrren, accused of being a witch because she has mismatched eyes. Before her death, Myrren passes on to the empathetic Wyl a most unusual gift. Some readers may feel frustrated by the lack of information about Myrren or the purpose of her gift, though no doubt future volumes will fill in the gaps in an otherwise delightful and fast-moving story.

Original idea.....but oh dear.....what went wrong..?!!
By Mr. M. Russell
Bought the first 2 books in this series. Myrren's Gift is an original spark of an idea and suprises you when you find out what it is. The book isn't too bad but I can't fathom some of the choices the characters makes at all. Just when things are going well, there's sadistic executions, deaths and all goes awry again. You're just getting to like some new good characters when they're torn away, tortured ( count the number of good guys tortured then killed, or just killed brutally, it's unbelievable! ) and left to to rot while she goes back to her main character Wyl. As one other reviewer said, it's like she was making it up as she goes along and the threads of the plot just unravel on her and don't tie up. The main character lets slip the name of a destination which leads to more carnage and then does it AGAIN in book 2 even though he's twigged what he caused the first time !! I'll go on to review book 2 now....don't think I'll be buying any more, pity there was a third..I was hoping to struggle to the end of the second one, Now I'm thinking of not bothering. The good characters don't seem to have a brain between any of them, they're always reacting and aren't capable of plotting any revenge bar putting a severed head in the post, oh how headless they are !! Enjoy :~)

Dumb and Dumbererer
By Patrick
I was attracted at first instance to this book's cover and purchased it having read only the first page in the bookstore. It was engaging, easy to read and I found myself intrigued by the Thirsk legacy and how the King would drive a wedge between this great alliance.

If only I had known then what I know now.

I can honestly say that I cannot in all my years recall having ever read a book populated with so many alternately stupid or brilliant, one-dimensional people. Our hero Wyl falls into so many blatantly-obvious traps (traps that anyone old enough to read this book will see coming from a mile away) that quite frankly you'll either be laughing or tearing your hair out by the end of the book. I counted Wyl fell into, on average, 1 trap per 100 pages. If someone ever does a study on modern fiction's stupidist protagonists, Wyl has my vote for a top 10 finish. In fact, there could even be a medal.

After Wyl, there are the very bad guys, the rogues with the hearts of gold and the tom boys who populate this work with it's gallery of stereotypes. Oh, and don't forget the super genius toilet boy and psychic dog. No, really.

And quite beyond the cast of cardboard actors, the outline of this fantasy setting might have been scribbled on the back of a post-it, with room to spare: "Two kingdoms. Warring. Civilised barbarians to the north. Distances deceptive. Disregard time and space for pace." One chapter they're in the south, the next in the north, then they're in the east before a quick jaunt to the south brings them back to the east. Okay, there is fast paced and then there is this! If you didn't want to get bogged down in the details of every tall oak or leafy shrub by the by, you could have at least tried to flesh the story out a little so the heroes didn't have to traverse the continent 5 times in the space of the first novel. Or, how about just writing a stand alone novel? If you're story doesn't have the stamina for a trilogy, please don't pad it with irritating plot twists and trite encounters designed only to kill a couple of chapters. It's a novel, not a game of D&D. Or if you honestly have to pad, take a leaf out of books by the greats. Describe the minutiae and give the world some depth. You'll get a couple of books by us then before we complain about your padding.

Is it all bad? No. There is an interesting premise here which regrettably Ms McIntosh has decided requires her protagonist be an imbecile to showcase. Further, this book has all of the core requirements of a good fantasy novel. Unfortunately, they are not at all fleshed out or given real life. Sacrificing depth for pace, the book just darts from one scene to the next without any narrative flow or grace. I agree with a number of other reviewers who have said this book feels as though it was written on the fly. It may work for Stephen King. It doesn't work here.

If not for the gruesome torture scenes, this book belongs with the children's fiction. Adults who have experienced good fantasy will be quickly frustrated.

Better left on the shelf.

Of God and Man, by Zygmunt Bauman, Stanislaw Obirek

In this engaging dialogue, Zygmunt Bauman, sociologist and philosopher, and Stanislaw Obirek, theologian and cultural historian, explore the place of spirituality and religion in the world today and in the everyday lives of individuals. Their conversation ranges from the plight of monotheistic religions cast onto a polytheistic world stage to the nature of religious experience and its impact on human worldviews and life strategies; from Messianic and Promethean ideas of redemption and salvation to the possibility and prospects of inter-religious dialogue and the factors standing in its way.

While starting from different places, Bauman and Obirek are driven by the same concern to reconcile the multiplicity of religions with the oneness of humanity, and to do so in a way that avoids the trap of adhering to a single truth, bearing witness instead to the multiplicity of human truths and the diversity of cultures and faiths. For everything creative in human existence has its roots in human diversity; it is not human diversity that turns brother against brother but the refusal of it. The fundamental condition of peace, solidarity and benevolent cooperation among human beings is a willingness to accept that there is a multiplicity of ways of being human, and a willingness to accept the model of coexistence that this multiplicity requires.

Review

"Engaging and thoroughly thought-provoking, stimulating and brimming with a theological analysis that is ultimately enticing to say the least, Of God and Man, is many things – predominantly that of a search for clarity and some kind of behavioural understanding."

Jeffrey Archer – THE FOURTH ESTATE, 1996
By Herand Mackertichian
Lubji, alias John Player, alias Richard Armstrong and Keith Townsend are two extraordinary children who later in life become newspaper tycoons, working against each other with only one thing in mind: one to destroy the other. Jeffrey Archer is a superb novelist, concocting a masterpiece of a story. This is a long story spanning 68 years of hard work, building an enviable empire, only to crumble for one of them. The reader must show patience in reading this novel. It is easy to stop and put the book aside. What a miss would that be!

Chernobyl 01:23:40: The Incredible True Story of the World's Worst Nuclear Disaster, by Andrew Leatherbarrow

At 01:23:40 on April 26th 1986, Alexander Akimov pressed the emergency shutdown button at Chernobyl’s fourth nuclear reactor. It was an act that forced the permanent evacuation of a city, killed thousands and crippled the Soviet Union. The event spawned decades of conflicting, exaggerated and inaccurate stories. This book, the result of five years of research, presents an accessible but comprehensive account of what really happened. From the desperate fight to prevent a burning reactor core from irradiating eastern Europe, to the self-sacrifice of the heroic men who entered fields of radiation so strong that machines wouldn’t work, to the surprising truth about the legendary ‘Chernobyl divers’, all the way through to the USSR’s final show-trial. The historical narrative is interwoven with a story of the author’s own spontaneous journey to Ukraine’s still-abandoned city of Pripyat and the wider Chernobyl Zone. Complete with over 45 pages of photographs of modern-day Pripyat and technical diagrams of the power station, Chernobyl 01:23:40 is a fascinating new account of the world’s worst nuclear disaster. Amazon edition revised to remove typos.

Simply the Best Book About Chernobyl I've Read
By D. E. D.
I have read many books about Chernobyl, from dry scientific texts to often silly fictional accounts of its aftermath, yet this young author has done the best job of all of them, offering a simple-yet-accurate description of how Chernobyl's RBMK reactors worked and, ultimately, how one of them critically failed. But there is much more here than a factual account of what happened 30 years ago at the V. I. Lenin power plant. Mr. Leatherbarrow shares his deepest feelings about what he encounters on his all-too-short journey to Pripyat and the plant itself. His descriptions are excellent and without pretense, and, above all, his narrative never gets bogged down. His unpretentious and even-handed treatment of the main players in this oft told story is very refreshing. And I was deeply moved by his emotional responses to what he saw and experienced; I think that I too would have wept as I left this compelling place behind. In the final analysis, Andrew put together a superbly told story that turned out to be of sufficient length to ensure that the reader "got it" without going on and on with repetitious and unnecessary details. Simply put, it was an excellent read, and I found it hard to believe that this was his first book. I certainly hope it won't be his last.

A Disturbing, Compelling Read

I'm an engineer, so I thought my biggest takeaway would be, "So that's how they screwed it up." Instead I was fascinated by the tour of Pripyat, the nuclear plant, and the surrounding Exclusion Zone.

I'm way too old for computer games, but I did play Call of Duty 4. That was my first encounter with the strange melancholy that the author describes. As Leatherbarrow continued his exploration of the hastily abandoned but eerily preserved city, my melancholy deepened to match his.

Nuclear power plants are basically thermal heat exchangers that drive good old steam through the usual turbine generators. But Leatherbarrow goes beyond the simplified stereotypes of meltdowns and the "China Syndrome." Instead he capably describes reactor poisoning, neutron absorption and other phenomena that led to devastatingly wrong decisions during the accident.

Most damning of all -- decay heat generation and residual radioactivity (keyword 'activity') remain ongoing to this day, and will render the zone uninhabitable for THOUSANDS of years.

Imagine that on your conscience.

Leatherbarrow ends with the political fallout and the massive financial cost of containing the disaster. And he closes with the realization that this was one event whose cost in human life, ecosystem damage, medical treatment and containment continues to be barely manageable. Imagine what one thermonuclear warhead would do. Or a war.

The best single-volume account for lay readers
By S. M.Silver
A self-published amateur effort that does a better, more readable, job on the disaster than many professional accounts I have read. Yes, for technical information, do make use of other sources, but understand that those sources will have little of the human drama a non-technical reader might be looking for. I was doubtful of the usefulness of such a book, given that Mr. Leatherbarrow is not a scientist or engineer and does not speak Russian. I decided to give his book a read based on the recommendation of another self-published person, a retired engineer (caveat: in addition to being professionally published, I, too, am a self-published author). Making use of nearly all the translated Russian accounts, both personal and technical, he has succeeded. He makes the functioning of the reactor and its disaster very clear, and parallels the Chernobyl experience with Fukushima and Three Mile Island. His brief history of the development of the reactor gives a very good account of the decisions that set the wheels in motion that moved into tragedy. The story of the aftermath, which is still being written, is made more real by his own visit to Chernobyl and the surrounding area. If you can only get one book on the disaster, then make it this one.

From Library Journal
Historian and illustrator Reed here expands the time frame of two previous editions of The Illustrator in America, reaching back to 1860 and forward to the present. His previous editions included the periods from 1900 to the 1960s (the first edition, published in 1966) and 1880 to 1980 (the second edition, published in 1984). His son, art curator and writer Roger Reed, served as coauthor of the second edition and editor of this new edition. A side-by-side comparison of the three editions shows significant differences, so libraries holding the previous two will want this as a supplement. The selected "outstanding" artists have increased to almost 650, and the single examples of each previous artist's work are different. In addition, more reproductions are in color, and contemporary digital developments bring it up to date. Two aspects keep the work from being as useful to researchers as it could be: the pictures are generally presented without the text they would have originally illustrated, thus losing their graphic context. Also, the bibliography is a very general one the artist entries do not have individual bibliographies. Recommended for the ready-reference areas of public and academic libraries. From Booklist
This is the third edition of this standard art reference work, and coverage has been expanded and enhanced. The first edition (1964) covered 1900 to 1960; the second (1984) covered a century, 1880 to 1980. This version goes back to the Civil War and continues into the twenty-first century. The basic format remains the same. The history of American illustration is outlined decade by decade through a series of biographical essays on noteworthy artists accompanied by representative illustrations. The essays range in length from a couple of paragraphs to a couple of pages. The author packs a great deal of information into the brief entries: training, influences, life circumstances, career highlights, notable works, and lasting contributions or influences to the field. The illustrations have been well chosen and are crisply reproduced in a full-color process. One innovation in this latest offering is that now all of the reproductions are in color. As a result, almost all artists are represented by works new to this edition.

Entries chronicle the achievements of more than 450 artists, among them printmakers Currier and Ives; caricaturist Al Hirschfeld; Kewpie creator Rose O'Neill; graphic novelist Art Spiegelman; book illustrator Chris Van Allsberg; and Alberto Vargas, known for his pinup girls. A time line provides an overview of major artistic influences. A selected bibliography of print sources and an index of artists complete the work. There are no sources cited for individual entries because, as explained in the introduction, "the information is an amalgam from many sources," including questionnaires, reference works, and periodicals.

This new edition will be welcomed by collections that support an art curriculum. Those libraries that own the first two editions will want to update because of the expanded chronological coverage, the use of color throughout, the introduction of new art reproductions, and the addition of new artists to every decade. The vivid illustrations and historical arrangement make for delightful browsing. Recommended for secondary, academic, and public libraries. REVWR

Golden Age Illustrations in all their glory
By talos72
I have the original 82 publication of this book, but had to buy this edition because it has many additional artists from the civil war era all the way to the end of the millenium. I am glad there is a new rise of appreciation for some of the most under-rated artists of the past. This book contains a nice range of work with good reproductions. I only wish many of the images were printed in a larger format, but it probably would be difficult given the number of artists represented. In any case, I highly recommend this book for all lovers of art.

The Wait is Over -- A Classic, Thoroughly Updated!
By Rich
Walt Reed has done it again! This time, he's added another 40 years to his sweeping survey of American illustrators. If you own the previous two editions of this work, you won't want to miss this updated treatment of Reed's subject. He's provided sumptuous new examples of the art of old favorites, and added a fine roster of previously unprofiled illustrators. The reproductions are gorgeous (this time around, they're ALL in color) and the book is beautifully designed. The price makes it a bargain. Highly recommended!

Illustrators Unite
By T. Tennard
In my opinion there are not enough books available about the field of illustration. I am generally disapointed when I go to a book store and I see stacks of books devoted to graphic design and so few devoted to Illustration. When a book like "The Illustrator In America" comes along I will definately pick it up. This book is a wonderful addition to the library of illustrators as well as those who love this artform. As an aspiring illustrator myself this book is such a treasure. Not only does it provide history it is also a deep well of inspiration. Whatever field one may be in it is always important to know it's history. This book provides a great many examples of the work of prominent illustrators dating back to the 1860's. I was introduced to dozens of illustrators that I was not familiar with. Each artist is represented by one illustration and a biographical paragraph. The "big" illustrators like Parrish, Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth, C.F. Payne, Bernie Fuchs, Milton Glaser, etc are given 1-2 pages and 2-4 illustrations. "The Illustrator In America" is a good compliment to Apri Ermoyan's "Famous American Illustrators". Thank God for The Society Of Illustrators for putting these books together. I look forward to many more wonderful books like this in the future.

Mountain Man Hero
By Kindle Customer
This is the first book I have read by this author. I fell in love with the hero, MacGregor, mountain man, rough & tough with a heart of gold, everyone's dream hero. Now, Regina is another story, I had a hard time taking to her character. I kept wanting to slap her and send her back to England. This is a story of a mountain man coming to the rescue of a damsel in distress. They meet up with all sorts of trials along the way. It is a wonderful exciting story, in spite of Regina, couldn't put it down.

I read the printed version
By Nih
This is a really great book!! A gem I found at an used books store.

At first I was getting a bit mad at the hero, MacGregor, and was siding with Regina, but then we got to know his past a bit better and saw repeatedly how good he was, how gently he acted with his scrap of a baby and with her... mwell, my heart was completely lost to the man.

The plot was really interesting, with great characters appearing all the time, hot scenes between the main characters and there was also real development and growth from both of them.

I liked reading about the Indians at the time, how they suffered and fought. The author is very talented, indeed. Great descriptions.

At I was getting to the end of the book, Regina (or Violet) was starting to annoy me quite a bit, but I got her point of view, and she ended up redeeming herself... the end was really sweet.

I wish I could have Pierre and/or MacGregor for myself. I'll be reading it again soon. ;)

A quick, interesting, romantic reading.

A rough-edged mountain man and a rebellious English lady have to battle cultural differences, their own painful pasts and a host of evil villains to find their new beginning together. Full of delicious elements--seductive scenes, romance, an adorable baby, glimpses into Native American and Colorado frontier life, a legendary jewel with mystical powers and danger around every turn--this story is not to be missed.

Frigosians must be big fans of the Frankenstein movies
By Melnik
Ryn Biggleston is a notorious thief. After betraying her partner-in-crime, Ryn turns to Maz Kanata for safety. But Maz will only help her for one day, free of charge. If Ryn wants additional days, she'll need to pay some hefty prices and what thief would give away their precious hard work? Well, the Frigosian cryptosurgeons Laparo and Thromba might just have the answer, but will it bite Ryn in the back?

To be honest, I can't tell what this story is trying to set up for Episode VII. The other stories by Walker were made to introduce the audience to Ithano, Zuvio, and Bobbajo. As far as I know the characters introduced in "The Face of Evil" hasn't been revealed to be in the movie. Now, with how the story ends, Ryn's absent would make sense. The Frigosians, well, it's possible they'll make appearances. However, it feels more like the story was made to introduce us to Maz Kanata's castle than any characters.*

The notable characters are as follow: Ryn Biggleston, Laparo and Thromba, Drix, and BeeLee. Drix is the Frigosians' hunchback assistant while BeeLee is Ryn's former partner that she left for dead. There isn't much to say about the characters. Ryn is a thief who would do anything to keep her money. BeeLee screws over Ryn with her final breath. Drix is pretty much Ygor to the Frigosians while the two are excitable mad scientists.

Oh, speaking of mad scientists, their experiments are kind of hard to suspend disbelief, Now, the two making Ryn into another species I can buy. Ryn is human and the species they chose is near-human so it's not hard to see them alter her appearance in such a way. However, when we see Specimen Nine, it pushes it beyond the edge. Specimen Nine is composed of a mix-mash of various species. The Star Wars universe may have fantastical elements but even that is pushing.

Like the rest of Walker's Star Wars shorts, "The Face of Evil" is a fast read. It would probably only take you an hour at best to finish it in one setting. However, I just didn't care for the characters and the only things I liked about it was the Frigosians, their Frankenstein-like lab, and what they did to Ryn. In the end, it just feels like filler.

By-the-by, why is there a Duro on the cover? No Duro shows up in the story. I would have thought they would use an illustration of either Ryn or Drix. Where did the Duro come from?

Also, Biggleston? That's the least Star Wars name I've ever heard.

*EDIT as of 12/17/2015: Just got back from seeing the movie and the Frigosians do make an appearance, but only in the background.

Fun read but does not feel like Star Wars

Fun read but felt very pointless and not very much like Star Wars. Felt like a classic Universal monster movie, like Frankenstein. Put me in the mood to watch a movie like that. How much it actually has to do with The Force Awakens remains to be seen.

A fun, quick read!
By Robert F. Glass
If you are like me and want to delve into and read all things Star Wars, then take a half hour break and read The Face of Evil. It mostly takes place on a new planet we are introduced to in The Force Awakens and we meet our new characters. It's Star Wars meets Frankenstein as we get a clever take on the old tale! Our new characters include a thief on the run, a couple of scientists with a penchant for wild reconstructive surgery , their faithful yet maimed assistant, and of course their own monster they created in an ancient castle on a dark and stormy night! The read is fun and fast paced, but I admit I did see the end coming after halfway through. Overall it's a good story and we get to learn a little more about the planet Takodana and Maz Kanata's castle that are featured in The Force Awakens. Give the story a shot and relive the tale of Frankenstein Star Wars style in a galaxy far, far away...
