Great Habits, Great Readers: A Practical Guide for K - 4 Reading in the Light of Common Core, by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo, Aja Settles, Julia

A book that brings the habits of reading to life

Great readers are not made by genetics or destiny but by the habits they build—habits that are intentionally built by their teachers. The early formal years of education are the key to reversing the reading gap and setting up children for success. But K-4 education seems to widen the gap between stronger and weaker readers, not close it. Today, the Common Core further increases the pressure to reach high levels of rigor. What can be done?

This book includes the strategies, systems, and lessons from the top classrooms that bring the habits of reading to life, creating countless quality opportunities for students to take one of the most complex skills we as people can know and to perform it fluently and easily.

  • Offers clear teaching strategies for teaching reading to all students, no matter what level
  • Includes more than 40 video examples from real classrooms
  • Written by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo, bestselling author of Driven by Data and Leverage Leadership

Great Habits, Great Readers puts the focus on: learning habits, reading habits, guided reading, and independent reading.

Top 4 Tips for K-4 Reading Teachers
1. Habits begin at the moment of error, not the moment of success. Address student error when it happens, and you create opportunities for students to practice the right habits instead of the wrong ones.

2. Change how students talk about reading and you’ll change how they think about reading. Authentic literary discussions give students unequalled opportunities to do the heavy cognitive work of reading—and they’re possible even for our youngest students.

3. Students can’t fall in love with reading if they aren’t reading to begin with. Consequently, independent reading—a sustained block of time that all students spend reading on their own—is integral to the success of any reading program.

4. The Common Core asks us to accelerate our instruction. Our students need us to meet them where they are. With the right tools in hand, you can do both. Exemplary guided reading instruction will allow you to teach a continuum of skills while tailoring your instruction in those skills to the developmental needs of each child.

Q&A With the Authors

Let’s start with the big question: How will Great Habits, Great Readers help teachers prepare students for Common Core-level rigor?

That word “rigor” is really the key. As educators, we all want our students to be able to thrive in a rigorous learning environment where they-- not we--do the heavy cognitive work. And the Common Core standards only take us halfway to that goal. They’re a big step towards rigor, because they require students to master more complex skills by younger grades than ever before. But whether we actually reach rigor still depends on how we measure those standards. For example, the Common Core says third graders need to know how to identify character traits. But the third-grade teacher who asks “Did the brother really mean it when he said he was okay?” isn’t giving her students such rigorous instruction as the teacher who asks “What is the brother feeling?” It’s the second question that forces the student to do the thinking. So, in this book we’re bridging the gap between what the Common Core says on paper and how it looks in the classroom. We’re saying, here’s how to build classrooms that do what that second question does.

You mention in the book that while the Common Core requires a greater focus on informational texts, it doesn’t say we should stop teaching narrative texts. Can you tell us more about that?

One of the most dangerous myths about the Common Core is that it asks teachers to devote half of their literacy block time to informational texts. While the Common Core does support the NAEP distribution of literary versus informational texts--which asks that fourth-grade students split their time 50-50 between both--it also points out that this doesn’t mean we need to take literature away from our classrooms. A much better solution: support literacy in other content-area classes by using informational texts to teach science and social studies. You’ll fulfill—probably exceed--the NAEP’s 50% informational requirement, drive student learning in content-area classes, and still have plenty of space to teach students the narrative reading skills they need.

Literacy-driven content-area instruction is a vast topic--one that merits another book on its own! But, in brief, it would require students to read a text in order to understand specific concepts. Reading would also be the key to building new vocabulary: students would learn new words by reading increasingly complex texts, not by being assigned stand-alone vocabulary lists. It may sound like a tough order for elementary students, but in our own work in the classroom, we’ve been amazed by their ability to use their existing knowledge base to tackle more and more complex reading in every subject.

The book puts a lot of effort into showing teachers how to implement the Reading-by-Habit model--you’ve included videos, sample lesson plans, a chapter on scheduling with variations for the resources different teachers might have available, and so on. Do you believe that any teacher can use the model detailed in the book?

Absolutely! What’s most magical about great reading instruction is that, in fact, it’s not magical at all: it’s based on concrete actions that are replicable by any teacher, at any school. This is epitomized by the Guided Reading Prompting Guides we include in the book. When you see a master teacher prompt during a reading lesson, that teacher often looks like a mind reader--or, at the very least, like someone with years of teaching experience. But when you take a closer look at exactly what our most successful teachers say when they prompt, we come up with a comprehensive guide that any teacher can use to anticipate where students will struggle and plan how to help them back on track. We believe all students have what it takes to learn to read, and we believe all teachers have the power to get them there, too. It’s all a matter not of inborn talent, but of learning the right things to do.

From the Back Cover

Great Habits, Great Readers

Our students aren't born knowing how to decode words, make inferences, and cite evidence. In truth, great reading grows from great habits—a deeply learned set of skills and strategies that students can access the instant they begin reading. Great Habits, Great Readers is about the choices we as K–4 literacy instructors can make to teach every one of our students the habits of skillful reading. It outlines those strategies, systems, and lesson types that bring the habits of reading to life, creating countless high-quality opportunities for students to practice one of the most complex skills humans can learn.

This book, and the Reading-by-Habit model it proposes, provides concrete guidance. Great Habits, Great Readers is not just about finding the right texts (though we'll cover that); it's not just about making discussions more text-dependent (though we'll address that, too). At its heart, the Reading-by-Habit model is about transforming that moment when a child gets something wrong into an opportunity to teach the habits that will help him or her get it right. Inside this book you'll find:

  • The Reading-by-Habit model, which builds a bridge between the rigor of the Common Core and the real-life needs of your class
  • Five types of lessons: Read-aloud, comprehension skills, phonics, guided reading, and independent reading
  • The tools you need to address the Common Core across your literacy block in a sustained, meaningful way
  • Rich resources—from 40+ video clips to Professional Development workshop scripts to show you what truly game-changing reading instruction looks like

Praise for Great Habits, Great Readers:

"Great Habits, Great Readers brings the Common Core to life through real children, real teachers, amazing results, and an absolute clarity about what is needed in our elementary school classrooms. This book is a complete roadmap to excellence."
—Mark Murphy, Secretary of Education, Delaware Department of Education

"Bambrick-Santoyo and his colleagues have proven it's possible to create extraordinary schools for the children who need them most. In this book, they do something even more important—they show us how. Every educator in America should read, discuss, and act on the ideas in this book."
—Timothy Knowles, John Dewey Urban Education Institute Director and clinical professor, University of Chicago

Incredible Text -- MUST HAVE FOR EDUCATORS!
By Natalie Aronson
Great Habits, Great Readers is every educator's dream. In this incredible text, North Star's leaders explain the habits, strategies and steps that have led them to their proven track record of success year after year. Aligned to the Common Core, Great Habits, Great Readers takes complex material and presents it in clear, bite-sized pieces that can be implemented by any school.

Great Habits, Great Readers explains all aspects of successful reading instruction. It begins by teaching how to create an efficient classroom with seamless systems to promote a rigorous learning environment ("Habits of the Classroom"). It then outlines the steps to create college-level (and student-guided) conversations at any grade level, known as "Habits of Discussion." There is a section devoted to each aspect of reading instruction including a deep dive into Guided Reading -- planning, executing, prompting, and more.

This instructional manual's content is practical and easily implemented in any classroom immediately. Perhaps what makes Great Habits, Great Readers more valuable than any other book about reading are the resources included to support the text. To name a few -- guided reading prompting guides (explicitly linked to the CCSS), sample lesson plans, workshop materials, AND a DVD that provides countless materials and video clips of excellent reading instruction in action.

As a colleague, fan and friend of Uncommon Schools, they have truly outdone themselves with Great Habits, Great Readers. Whether you are a teacher, a coach, a school leader, a superintendent, or just eager to learn how to teach reading, you must buy this book --it is unquestionable that you (and your students) will be changed forever!

Great Habits, Great Readers. . .GREAT BOOK!
By Melody D.
This book explains, in clear, logical language, how to teach reading so that all children learn. The book is not theoretical. Instead, the authors have gathered best practices to put together a reading system that has been proven to work over and over again with students who live in poverty conditions. The authors don't propose what MIGHT work; they describe what IS already working in their schools. Great Habits, Great Readers explains how to establish classroom management that saves time and facilitates learning ("Habits of the Classroom"). It moves on to "Habits of Discussion", explaining how to place the Common Core speaking and listening standards in their proper perspective as the bedrock of reading instruction. The authors then explain each of the parts of reading instruction in clear, easy-to-follow terms. Each chapter is supported by video clips (on the DVD included with the book) of master teachers working with real students. The DVD alone is worth the price of the book. It's inspiring and very instructive: a picture is, after all, worth a thousand words! Another valuable feature is the prompting guides, which show teachers exactly what students should master at each reading level, and what to say when students struggle with a particular skill. The prompting guides include explicit connections to the Common Core reading standards.

We have ordered a copy for every teacher in our Title 1 elementary school (although many teachers insisted on buying their own copy) and intend to use it next year as the basis for a whole school book study. I also purchased a copy for our district's elementary language arts curriculum director. As a literacy coach and reading intervention teacher, I'm telling our faculty that this book is for anyone who works with needy populations of students. It's also for anyone who has ever thought, "I've done everything I know how to do, and they're still not reading on grade level." Great Habits, Great Readers is a career-changing book for teachers, and a life-changing book for students who receive instruction based on its principles.

A Valuable Resource for School Leaders
By Lagra Newman
North Star Academy's literacy program is among the most rigorous, highest quality programs in our nation. Certainly, the ability to elevate student academic performance from the lowest quartile to the 99th percentile on national assessments year after year emphasizes this fact; however, the power of their program is best exemplified by the enduring habits developed by their young scholars. It is a powerful experience to witness these habits in action - students maximizing instructional time by transitioning to literacy groups in less than 30 seconds, engaging in peer discussions drawing on evidence from their leveled text, and posing a prompt to support a peer's understanding.

As a rising school leader, I had the opportunity to visit North Star Academy on a few different occasions, and after each visit, I couldn't help but to wish that I had an internal guide for how to execute this model in the school I would lead. And lo and behold, Great Habits, Great Readers has been my wish come true. This text has broken the complexity of a rigorous literacy program into clear and digestible components that can be successfully replicated by schools across the nation. Aligned to Common Core, this instructional manual outlines specific instructional strategies and action steps that, when implemented, drive strong reading habits and success among budding elementary readers. Additionally, the resources included in the text, specifically narrative and informational guided reading prompting guides, sample lesson plans, and workshop preparation sheets provide a solid foundation from which to build high quality literacy tools. Further, a CD accompanies this text, providing targeted, authentic video segments of effective literacy instructional practices and strategies implemented by teachers and students in real time.

Indeed, Great Habits, Great Readers equips leaders and teachers to make effective instructional decisions within the literacy program that instill skillful reading habits in students. This book provides schools across the nation with the opportunity to get the complex art of literacy instruction, one of the most critical elements of a child's learning process, right! My school opens this July with an inaugural class of Kindergarteners, and our literacy framework is heavily based on Great Habits, Great Readers. Our founding instructional team is thrilled to have such a treasured, proven resource to support the success of our scholars!

Requiring no more background than plane geometry and elementary algebra, this book leads the reader into some of the most fundamental ideas of mathematics, the ideas that make the subject exciting and interesting. Explaining clearly how each problem has arisen and, in some cases, resolved, Hans Rademacher and Otto Toeplitz's deep curiosity for the subject and their outstanding pedagogical talents shine through. The Real Beauty and Exhiliration of Math
By A Customer
This is a superb book, and the best way to first sample the delights of math for its own sake. Don't let the subtitle "Selections from Mathematics for the Amateur" turn you off. True, the math involved is elementary, not going beyond high school algebra and geometry. But the material won't be found in most textbooks, having been chosen with elegance and beauty, rather than utility, in mind (which isn't to say that it doesn't have its important uses). Even the professional mathematician who has already seen most of the contents will profit from studying the book's exemplary treatment of its topics. The authors are some of the best math expositors who have ever lived. Each idea in the book is developed admirably, and strikes the perfect balance between conciseness and lucidity. You probably can't do better in choosing an introduction to prime and perfect numbers, the four-color problem, regular polyhedra, Pythagorean triples, pedal triangles, periodic decimal fractions, Waring's problem, the number 30 (sic!), and many other fascinating intellectual tibdits.
At Dover's low price, this book is a great buy. Get it! If you have more mathematical knowledge, then I also recommend "Proofs from the Book" by Aigner, et al., which is written for mathematicians in a similar style.

An excellent collection of problems at the elementary level
By Arif Zaman
Written by two top-notch mathematicians, requiring the mathematics that a high school student can do, this book takes you on a journey that is easy to follow and yet shows the power of mathematics. It is an excellent book for high school enrichement or early undergraduates.
Even if you are a mathematician you will be suprized at many of the results and enjoy trying to solve some of the problems. Many of the problems are quite hard. Even though some of the problems are the standard ones, many are off the beaten track. No matter what your level of expertise, I am sure you will enjoy this book.

So real, So painful
By Sandra Sunderland
Mixed blood Ojibwe writer Drew Hayden Taylor touches the heart with this two act play which relates the pain and grief resulting from government programs in which Indian children were virtually stolen from their parents to be adopted by non-natives.
The plot revolves around the newly found relationship of long-separated sisters who have been reunited; one from the reservation and the other an urban raised attorney. A short play of pathos and humor, the characters are very alive and will remain in the reader's memory
This reader found herself hoping to have an opportunity to see the play performed someday.

By Monique A. Gordon
I started this book. It's day two and I'm almost finished. What a page turner-laugh, cry, and get an education in one book on the Native People's culture. I now want to read the play that proceeds this one.

Limited access to notes and highlights. Awful.
    By anon
Like the previous (other) reviewer, I am annoyed that this ebook has so little portability. I bought the Kindle text so I could read it on the go, using my Kindle, or MacAir. Turns out, this book doesn't even load on to my Kindle or my lap top. It ONLY loads onto my desktop, making the ebook not more but LESS portable than the hard copy would have been. The buyer alert needs to more prominent.

Update: if you highlight or take notes liberally, don't expect to revisit your highlighted material except by laboriously clicking back (or ahead), page-by-page. This is true on the lap top (which finally loads the text) and the desk top for me. I've read through chapter 14, highlighting along the way. I've opened the sidebar along the left side and chosen "All My Notes and Marks" The function does NOT track highlights as I make them though. It shows the notes and marks beginning from pg. 1, regardless of where you actually are in the text. You have to scroll down to find newer ones. Problem is, the sidebar only seems capable of loading a limited number of notes. It is impossible (as far as I can tell) to re-access highlights on this bar after reaching (for me) about pg. 40. Try to scroll much farther that and everything gets wonky and then goes blank. The side menu never populates with the rest of the notes/highlights. I don't know if it the side bar is just loading very, very slowly or what. Regardless, I cannot use this text to study from. I don't have 10 minutes to wait for the stupid thing to find my highlights on pg 129 or 204 or whatever, when I could just flip to them in a second with a paper text. Very irritating. I will not buy another large electronic textbook.

    Excellent Text

The authors write clearly and eloquently. Excellent for any level of nurse looking to become more familiar with the politics of nursing... I think this book will become even more valuable in the years to come as we have even more say in healthcare.

A Long Bright Future, by Laura Carstensen

The twentieth century bequeathed us a fabulous gift: thirty more years of life on average. Supersized life spans are going to radically alter society, and present an unprecedented opportunity to change our approach not only to old age but to all of life's stages. The ramifications are just beginning to dawn on us.... yet in the meantime, we keep thinking about, and planning for, life as it used to be lived.

In A Long Bright Future, longevity and aging expert Laura Carstensen guides us into the new possibilities offered by a longer life. She debunks the myths and misconceptions about aging that stop us from adequately preparing for the future both as individuals and as a society: that growing older is associated with loneliness and unhappiness, and that only the genetically blessed live well and long. She then focuses on other important components of a long life, including finances, health, social relationships, Medicare and Social Security, challenging our preconceived notions of “old age” every step of the way.

    Chapter 1
Five Myths About Aging You Can't Afford to Believe

If we're going to develop a clear-eyed view of our futures, as a prelude to making old age better and longer-lasting, we're going to have to get rid of as many myths about aging as we can--and there are plenty. In fact, there is a very good chance that much of what you think you know about aging is wrong.
The entire aging process is fraught with unappealing stereotypes and discouraging myths, probably because few of us see aging up close until we're fully immersed in it ourselves. American society is so age segregated that the few older people we do know are usually our grandparents or elder relatives--a small and decidedly unrepresentative sample whose very status as close family often blurs the nuances of their personalities and their lives. We often appreciate just the roles they fill, not the people they are.
After all, how many of us have subtle and complex understandings of the older people in our families until we're older ourselves? I certainly didn't ask a lot of questions of my older relatives when I was young. I loved them, but didn't really try to get to know them as individuals. For their part, older relatives may not spend much time disclosing the details of their personal lives to the younger generation; a family's focus is usually on the young ones. Until my Aunt Mabel was in her nineties, I assumed she had been single all of her life. In fact, she had had a short and turbulent marriage when she was young woman. Until I was middle-aged, I didn't know her sister had been found dead in a hotel room, and I still don't know the circumstances that surrounded her death. I didn't know that my grandfather was the person in his small Nebraska town to whom everyone turned whenever they needed any sort of appliance or radio repaired. The man apparently had an instinct for electricity. Maybe it is no coincidence that his son, my father, grew up to study electromagnetic fields. But I didn't make these connections until I was aging myself.
In the absence of personal knowledge, we may expect all older people to be cut from the same cloth as the few we happen to know. I suspect that this is why aging stereotypes tend to run to one-dimensional polar opposites, either based on happy times at holidays with beloved older family members, or on negative interactions with people who seem extremely irritable or sick. Worse, when we imagine what we'll be like ourselves when we're older, we tend to extrapolate from our limited family experiences, and that's not always a pretty picture--it depends on whether your particular Aunt Betty baked cookies or had dementia. Time after time, I've given talks about aging and people in the audience tell me either that they believe a particular finding because their grandmothers are just like that, or they refuse to believe it, because their grandmothers aren't like that at all.
Few of us see the scope, the range, or the complexities of older lives. For purely selfish reasons, this is problematic because it makes it hard to know where we're headed ourselves, and to consider the vast range of possibilities ahead. The truth of it is that older people's life paths are anything but binary; there's a good deal of shading between saintly granny and sour grump. Their lives are also anything but bland. In fact, in terms of personality and life experience, older people are the most diverse part of the population. My dad likes to say that all babies are alike--as infants, they have little opportunity to differentiate. But with every decade of life, every twist in the life path makes people more individual, less likely to have been shaped by the exact same set of experiences as anyone else. Consequently, as a person grows older, chronological age tells us less and less about what they will be like. It makes no sense to embark on discussions about aging societies by reducing older populations to their lowest common denominators.
As a practical matter for people who want to plan happy, healthy long lives for themselves, or for a society that wants to engineer them for everyone, these myths don't just seed doubts, they are impediments to change. They create worries that cloud the imagination and blunt hope, even if they never pan out. They create social stresses and divisions between generations that don't really need to exist. They promote anachronistic expectations about old age that, as a species and a society, we have simply outgrown, and that are out of step with the way real people live today. Much of the time, they paint such a grim picture of the future that we dread thinking about it, never mind planning for it!
Let's start by getting rid of five of the worst myths:
    * The "Misery Myth" that older people are sad and lonely
    * The "DNA Is Destiny Myth" that your whole fate is foretold in your genes
    * The "Work Hard, Retire Harder Myth" that we should rush to exit the workforce
    * The "Scarcity Myth" that older people are a drain on the world's resources
    * The "We Age Alone Myth" that how we fare in old age is entirely an individual matter, and not a function of society
Myth #1: Older People Are Miserable
The biggest myth on the menu is that older people are inevitably unhappy, lonely, and dejected. If you've been dreading the passage of time because you worry that your happiest days are behind you, take heart. I've spent the last thirty years investigating the psychology of aging, and my research consistently shows that, in terms of emotion, the best years come late in life.
With the exception of dementia-related diseases, which by definition have organic roots, mental health generally improves with age. Older people as a group suffer less from depression, anxiety, and substance abuse than their younger counterparts. In everyday life, they experience fewer negative emotions than people in their twenties and thirties--the people we stereotypically think of as the most happy--yet just as many positive ones. Moreover, older people manage negative emotions better than younger people do. When negative feelings arise, they don't linger the way they do in the young. Many people, even social scientists, are shocked by these findings. They challenge our implicit understanding of happiness, which is that it flows from the esoteric qualities of youth: health, beauty, power. But if these naturally recede with age, why are older people so content?
This has been dubbed the paradox of aging, but I maintain there is more logic than paradox. The answer lies in something we might commonly call life perspective; a more technical term that I and my colleagues have introduced is "socioemotional selectivity." I'll discuss our theory about this concept in greater depth in chapter 4, but the crux of this idea is that human beings are unique in their ability to measure the passage of time against a sort of internal "life span clock," keeping track of where they are in the life cycle. When we are young, time seems expansive, and we focus on acquiring knowledge, seeking novel experiences, and enmeshing ourselves in a large network of friends and colleagues. As we age, we sense the clock winding down and our attention shifts to savoring the time that is left, focusing instead on depth of experience, closeness, a smaller set of goals, and a highly selected group of loved ones.
This change in perspective seems to bring with it a new way of evaluating what is worth one's time, attention, worry, or wrath. For many, this translates into a greater tendency to let go of life's negatives, and to focus on the positives. My mother managed to nail this perspective with a single sentence in an e-mail she sent me last week: "Still having terrible winter weather, but isn't that full moon beautiful?"
For most older people, simple pleasures expand in importance. Sticky interpersonal situations don't seem worth the trouble. Good times are cherished, and there is greater recognition that bad times will pass. People are more likely to forgive when time horizons are limited. Even the very experience of emotion changes with age; feelings grow richer and more complex.
Indeed, social circles shrink over the years, but it's not an indicator of loneliness. Usually this shedding of connections is felt as a beneficial change, as people distill their social roster to their most valued friends, weeding out the coworkers and casual acquaintances who took up so much time and effort before. Older people report being more satisfied with their social relationships than younger people do, particularly prizing their relationships with their children and other younger relatives.
Marriages deepen, too, starting around the time that the last of the couple's children leaves the nest; in fact, many couples reach honeymoon levels of satisfaction when the kids move out. One of my favorite findings about long-term marriages is that even unhappily married couples report that, after many years together, they are happier than they used to be. It's actually the relatively early years of marriage, particularly the points at which the kids are either toddlers or adolescents, that take the biggest toll on marital contentment.
Mind you, it's not that young and middle-aged married couples don't enjoy parenting or love their children--they do. Rather, children tend to produce tensions between mothers and fathers. Young parents suddenly have less time for enjoyable activities with each other and find themselves in frequent conflicts over how to care for the baby. Even in homes where the parents strive to be egalitarian, a more gendered division of labor arises. Fathers may feel left out of the close bond that forms almost instantly between mother and child, and feel pressured to work increasingly hard outside of the home to provide for the new family. Stay-at-home mothers often feel burdened and left out of the world.
Once the children are grown and launched from the home, couples reconnect. I try not to smile when the college students I teach at Stanford express concern about h...

Respect our longer futures by planning to take full advantage of our new possibilities
    By Tom Sales
I read this book after seeing Laura Carstensen quoted in Time Magazine's excellent multi-faceted March 2, 2015 cover story on aging. Ironically, I was reading this while waiting as my wife was getting cataract and lens replacement surgery that will enable her to see better than she's ever seen in her entire life. Along with about 30 other "old people" who were about to experience the same miracle of modern medical technology on an assembly line to fix their eyes for life in a 10-minute operation.

The previous reviews here for "A Long Bright Future"--while mostly 4- and 5-star--seemed somehow less than passionate, as was the audience to whom Carstensen presented in a 2012 TED YouTube video soon after "A Long Bright Future" was published. It's hard to be passionate about something none of us really understands nor appreciates yet ... that we are the first demographic cohort to really experience not just the government's plan for how Social Security, Medicare and 401(k)s will work together to sustain our after-work passage but also to learn how to make the most of additional years of longevity that we are all inheriting.

It's kind of a "be careful what you wish for" circumstance we find ourselves in. We are constantly guilted for not saving enough for retirement, but no one ever planned for us to live this long or to have access to medical innovations that are adding quality years if not decades to our lives. As a 65-year old who still enjoys working, I read much of the daily barrage of articles and books about preparing emotionally and financially for retirement and have posted several of my reviews on Amazon for books like "Falling Short" and "Unretirement." "A Long Bright Future" adds a broader perspective to the discussion by reassuring us that we're not stupid for not preparing. We just need to appreciate what's happening in a broader, more opportunistic way.

Several of the Amazon reviews here also raise the questions, "who is this book for?" and "who can best benefit from its message?" One reviewer was disappointed that Carstensen didn't describe what the future was actually going to be like. This reminded me of conversations I used to have with a colleague who also enjoyed science fiction movies that portray the future. He observed that most future visions were broken-down architectures from where we live in today, often bleak and dark, but with some cool new technology in the middle of the scenes. Think "Blade Runner." Carstensen points out that it's difficult for each of us to really envision a future that's not deeply impacted by what we know and do today. So, it seems to me that this book will benefit people of all age groups, but probably mostly 40- to 70-somethings will take the time to read it. But in doing so, we can all benefit in realizing that we can be productive and offer value to others for much longer than today's political debates and financial industry alarmists portray.

Because as difficult as it is to make good decisions, many of these debates and alarmists are correct that something must be done if we are to live into our 90's and beyond. Laura Carstensen helps to us to think and plan at a deeper level to take better advantage of the extra time we have to gain greater satisfaction in what we can do for others and for ourselves.

Loved this book so much I bought another one just to share!
    By mlc1955
This is the first time I have been compelled to submit a review of a book on Amazon. I just finished reading Dr. Carstensen's book and I am so excited to share it with others. Fortunately, I will be able to do so as I will be teaching a class entitled "Growing with Intention: Having the Life you Want after Age 40" through my local college's continuing education program starting in February 2011. Dr. Carstensen's book challenges baby boomers to change the way aging is viewed in our culture. I am so encouraged by her message. And, I am so thankful that I discovered this book just in time to share it with my students!

Only Read This Book If You Are Aging ;)
    By James D. Kirk
Dr. Carstensen has a sensible outlook for the future of folks as they get older. Her book is extremely well researched and annotated. Even if one is not particularly interested in the study of aging, "A Long Bright Future" would serve one well in helping to divine a clearer vision of the aging process, how it can be managed successfully for the individual and society as a whole.

This book is an introduction to many of the topics that an engineer needs to master in order to successfully design experiments and measurement systems. In addition to descriptions of common measurement systems, the book describes computerized data acquisition systems, common statistical techniques, experimental uncertainty analysis, and guidelines for planning and documenting experiments. It should be noted that this book is introductory in nature. Many of the subjects covered in a chapter or a few pages here are the subjects of complete books or major technical papers. Only the most common measurement systems are included—there exist many others that are used in practice. More comprehensive studies of available literature and consultation with product vendors are appropriate when engaging in a significant real-world experimental program. It is to be expected that the skills of the experimenter will be enhanced by more advanced courses in experimental and measurement systems design and practical experience.

The design of an experimental or measurement system is inherently an interdisciplinary activity. For example, the instrumentation and control system of a process plant might require the skills of chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and computer engineers. Similarly, the specification of the instrumentation used to measure the earthquake response of a large structure will involve the skills of civil, electrical, and computer engineers. Based on these facts, the topics presented in this book have been selected to prepare engineering students and practicing engineers of different disciplines to design experimental projects and measurement systems.

This book was conceived when a decision was made at San Francisco State University to upgrade the laboratory of our first experimental course from using primarily mechanical instruments to using electrical output devices, and to introduce the students to the acquisition and processing of the data with computer systems. The lecture was upgraded at the same time to include the new topics. A survey was made of available texts, and none was found to provide complete coverage of the material in the revised course. The primary deficiencies were in the coverage of computerized data acquisition systems, statistics, and the design and documentation of experiments. Consequently, we created a course reader, which was subsequently expanded to become this book.

The book first introduces the essential general characteristics of instruments, electrical measurement systems, and computerized data acquisition systems. This introduction gives the students a foundation for the laboratory associated with the course. The theory of discretely sampled systems is introduced next. The book then moves into statistics and experimental uncertainty analysis, which are both considered central to a modern course in experimental methods. It is not anticipated that the remaining chapters will necessarily be covered either in their entirety or in the presented sequence in lectures—the instructor will select appropriate subjects. Descriptions and theory are provided for a wide variety of measurement systems. There is an extensive discussion of dynamic measurement systems with applications. Finally, guidance for planning experiments, including scheduling, cost estimation, and outlines for project proposals and reports, are presented in the last chapter.

There are some subjects included in the introductory chapters that are frequently of interest, but are often not considered vital for an introductory experimental methods course. These subjects include the material on circuits using operational amplifiers (Sections 3.2.2, 3.2.5 and 3.2.6), details on various types of analog-to-digital converters (Section 4.3.3), and the material on Fourier transforms (Section 5.3). Any or all of these sections can be omitted without significant impact on the remainder of the text.

The book has been designed for a semester course of up to three lectures with one laboratory per week. Depending on the time available, it is expected that only selected topics will be covered. The material covered depends on the number of lectures per week, the prior preparation of students in the area of statistics, and the scope of included design project(s). The book can serve as a reference for subsequent laboratory courses.

Our introductory course in engineering experimentation is presented to all undergraduate engineers in civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. The one-semester format includes two lectures per week and one three-hour laboratory. In our two-lecture-per-week format, the course content is broken down as follows:

  • General aspects of measurement systems (2 lectures)
  • Electrical output measurement systems (2 lectures)
  • Computerized data acquisition systems (3 lectures)
  • Fourier analysis and the sampling rate theorem (4 lectures)
  • Statistical methods and uncertainty analysis (10 lectures)
  • Selected measurement devices (4 lectures)
  • Dynamic measurement systems (3 lectures)
  • Additional measurement systems and the material on planning and documenting experiments are covered in the laboratory. The laboratory also includes an introduction to computerized data acquisition systems and applicable software; basic measurements such as temperature, pressure, and displacement; statistical analysis of data; the sampling rate theorem; and a modest design project. A subsequent laboratory-only course expands on the introductory course and includes a significant design project.

There is sufficient material for a one-semester, three-lecture-per-week course even if the students have taken a prior course in statistics. Areas that can be covered in greater detail include operational amplifiers, analog-to-digital converters, spectral analysis, uncertainty analysis, measurement devices, dynamic measurements, and experiment design.

In this second edition, Chapter 6 on statistics has been significantly enhanced to include the Poisson distribution, multiple and polynomial regression, outlier analysis for x-y data sets, and linear functions of random variables. Chapter 7 on uncertainty analysis has been extensively modified to make it compatible with the latest ASME standard and to provide a simpler path through the material for large data samples. Chapter 5 has been modified to include the folding diagram for predicting alias frequencies and to make the nomenclature for Fourier series consistent with common current usage. Numerous lesser alterations have been made throughout the book to clarify, update, or enhance the material. Finally, the number of homework problems has been increased by 50%.

This book was useful for two of my college courses
    By Mixmasta91
This book was useful for two of my college courses, and it is a great reference book to have for anyone that uses any ME/EE lab equipment. Theirs a lot of material crammed into this relatively small book. Despite that this textbook is painful to read at times. I can't point out anything specific, but I hated using this book despite its useful-ness.

One of the best books about engineering experimentation
    By Jason P
This is one of the best books about engineering that I have read. It shows the principles of experimentation. It also describes the equipment and its variables that an experience engineer can built its own.

    Helpful

I'm doing an Engr. Experimentation course and I found this to be extremely helpful. Helps you understand the basics and the concepts, so much so that I was surprised how much more I understood in terms of technical esoterica.
