I'm going to write a DUMMY book called Growing old for Dummies. Heaven knows we need one.
By Will o' the Wisp
I love this book. My grandchild gave me this for Christmas and I didn't tell her I was already getting one from AMAZON. I didn't have the heart to tell tell that. In reality, I am sure she was tired of me asking so many question about computers and that's why I got this. Or she could have seen the many DUMMIES books I have on the shelf. I have one for beading, jewelry making, etc. etc. I love them all cause they make learning easy.

I am a retired senior citizen and live in a beautiful retirement village. I read the book and highlighted the things I thought some other seniors might not know. I'm going to be the Bill Gates of THE LAST RESORT if I keep reading these computer books. My next one (I also got from AMAZON) is one I was also glad to get ,,,, it's for learning WINDOWS 10. I started on it today and I'll do a review on that one when I finish.

This PC FOR DUMMIES I found easy to read and comprehend. We old folks did not grow up with computers as did our kids and grandkids. However, I did work for GE in Louisville, Ky, when the first huge computer UNIVAC was installed. It took up a whole floor; the floor had to be kept at a certain temperature; and it was noisy. It's astounding to know now that what was in that huge monster is now what is in our phones (the phones have even more that UNIVAC did). So, I at least got to SEE something that our kids did not get to see nor have a hand in the making of it.

So, anytime you see a book for DUMMIES, take a look....you might learn something fun.

PCs For Dummies
By new yorker
I'm not the intended audience for this book , being somewhat computer literate on multiple platforms. That said I found this overly simplistic. The lack of detailed troubleshooting sections on the installation of Windows 10 upgrades is a major shortcoming. If you are buying a first computer with Windows 10 ore-installed this may be of help. It could be a good companion to the computer you bought your Grandparents to Skype on, but it fails to mention Skype in the index. Only for the totally clueless.

Great Book for the Certain Dummies
By Arnim Zola
This is a very good book for teaching your kids or grandparents about PC's. There is a wide range of topics and it goes in depth in hardware and software (Windows 10). Don't get this book if you are interested in Macs. The author refers to Mac users as "crybabies". You should get this book instead if you have a Mac Macs For Dummies

I particularly like the frequency and detail of the diagrams which makes the book more approachable. The chart that shows the difference between the many types of USB connectors may be helpful to some. The writing itself is clear with occasional humor. It is obvious that the author, who has written many other Dummies books, is very knowledgable and good at conveying that knowledge in a way that is understandable. This edition has been updated to cover Windows 10.

This was a difficult book to rate since I can't figure out the target demographic. Is it for seniors? There are already several Dummies books for seniors (Computers For Seniors For Dummies). Is this book for kids? If it's for kids, it should be for older ones (like 10 and up) who enjoy technical writing and don't mind the outdated Dummies book formatting.

So I'm rating this book 5 stars for the very narrow demographic of people who don't know how to use PC's, whoever they are. Enjoy the half page dedicated to the concept of a computer cable.

Personally, I think the Dummies series is in need of an overhaul. I have bought more than I'd like to admit over the years and the format has not changed much. There is still the ugly brush script font used for the section headings and the same icons in the margin. Also, it's obvious that some of the diagrams were re-used from one of the previous 12 editions of the book such as a diagram that has an IBM XT desktop computer (or maybe it's just a bad choice of clip art). Lastly, the diagrams that have photos in them (such as some illustrating Windows 10) aren't great due to the low resolution black and white printing common in Dummies books. If I were able to deduct 1/2 star for a tired book format, I would.

FYI: if you already know your way around a PC computer and need to learn about Windows 10, you may want to try one of these instead : Windows 10 For Seniors For Dummies or Windows 10 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)).
