Ultimate German Beginner-Intermediate (Coursebook)

I must start off by saying that I have never had a German class, neither at any formal institution nor with a tutor, friend, or the like. Therefore, I cannot judge this text against any formal course of German.
But, I am very interested in learning languages, and have used many textbooks in the past, even some made for use in a school environment. So, I feel that I can give a fairly good critique of this book.
Out of any foreign language textbook I have used, I find that this book is, if not THE best, one of the best I have had the experience of learning a language with. I am self-taught in all of the languages I have been learning, except for three years of Spanish I took in school. Therefore, I know that textbooks need to have certain aspects to be able to be used sufficiently for self-study, and this book has them.
Although there is no CD, many resources can be found online for the pronunciation of German, and the pronunciation notes in the beginning of the book, I find, are very good ones. Therefore, I do not feel that pronunciation should be much of a struggle to learn.
I very much like the structure of the chapters in this book, and find that it works very well for learners. Each chapter begins with a Dialogue or two, and their translation(s). These are not too difficult and not too long or too short, and they are written to be able to be mostly understood based on knowledge from previous chapters. Following the Dialogue, there is a section for Grammar and Structure, which teaches material a reader has not yet learned from a previous chapter. There are then vocabulary lists and exercises, to reinforce the material. By the end of a chapter, a reader should be able to understand the dialogue, or at least almost all of it.
The book also provides review quizzes after every ten chapters, as well as practice readings written like articles one might see in the news or on a blog, et cetera.
Overall, I find that this book is a very good introduction to the German language for anyone interested, whether a student, or just a casual learner such as myself.

Excellent for a German "over-the-counter" course!

The best way to learn german is by living in a German-speaking country. If you can't do that, this course will take you a long way toward proficiency in German. BUT, I would say that the accompanying CD's are a must for the novice. I took 4 years in college, and still read German newspapers on line, but wanted something to brush up. I have used several language courses (Barron's, Pimsleur, Tell Me More, etc.) I would rank this one in the top 2. Somehow, they strike a good balance of natural conversation exposure, phrase-learning, useful vocabulary, grammar, and culture tips. They pack more into their course than most. As far as how advanced you can go with Ultimate German, they do a good job there, too. Normally, passive voice, subjunctive, and other more difficult grammar structures are either not covered by other language courses, or given shallow coverage. The Ultimate German advanced book, and even the beginner-intermediate levels cover these, and in a very natural way...much earlier on than other courses. My library had both sets. I ripped the CD's (legal) and burned them onto discs, as well as put them on my MP3. I then bought just the book on Amazon. That way, I got a great course for pennies on the dollar. I can't imagine that the "new complete course" can do much better, so I went with this last version before they changed over. Glad I did. Viel vergn�gen!

It tottaly worth the price

I already read the "The Everything Learning German" (more than twice...) by Ed Swick and I would say that the Swick's book is more didactic and easy to read for a truly beginner, even though I'm still in lesson 11 in the "Ultimate German". There are some points that are said in the "Ultimate German" book that Swick's doesn't covers and vice-versa and appears also that the Swick's is more updated. But anyway, the book is a good "next-step" and a cheap one, you would spend some months to fully study it.

Oh Baby, This is A Good Read!!

I am always attracted to colorful covers and this book looked like a comedy. But we all know you can't judge a book by its cover! Although this story had its humorous moments it was a pretty serious read.
Jake Chastaine had it all. He was a partner in a prestigious law firm, he had a beautiful wife, home and in-laws who loved him dearly. He had wealth and happiness and he and his wife were about to start a family with the help of a fertility clinic. Then disaster struck and his wife and his parents were killed in an auto accident. Now two years later Jake discovers that his doctor at the fertility clinic used Jake's one and only back up sample to impregnate a single mother. Annie Hollister and her daughter, Madeline, live on a ranch in Lucky, Oklahoma. Annie's life is happy and peaceful until Jake shows up on her doorstep and claims to be her child's father! She knows he is telling the truth because Madeline is a tiny replica of Jake. Will she be forced to share custody with this stranger?
This story is a pleasurable read. It is well-written and that alone will hold my attention whatever the genre. Jake and Annie are intelligent characters and work through their problems with that same intelligence. I have a fourteen month old nephew so I know how a child that age should act and the author perfectly portrayed little Madeline. I usually don't read stories with children in the lead roles but I have to admit that this child is so cute and adorable. The secondary characters are Jake's in-laws, Annie's ranch manager and his wife, Annie's lawyer and a dachshund named Hot Dog.
There is good interaction between all characters and lots of dialogue. I found it refreshing that the plot wasn't based on some major deceit to be resolved at the end of the story. This story is about everyday, ordinary people trying to rebuild their lives after a tragedy. I think that Ms. Wells' style of writing is similar to that of Barbara Bretton. I also think that this book will be one of this year's sleepers, so buy a copy now before it becomes too hard to find. Enjoy!!

What a Beautiful Story

I wasn't sure if this was a novel I wanted to read or not but after reading brief description of it in "RT" I took a chance and purchased it anyway; I'm so glad I did. In the normal scope of life first comes love, then marriage and then baby. This novel does not fall into the normal scope.
Beautiful and eccentric rancher, Annie Hollister decided to leave the high paced life of advertising and return to the ranch her grandparents left her to enjoy a life she loves, fresh air, trees, grass, animals, etc. After returning to the ranch Annie's biological clock is ticking loud and clear but she sees no man she'd want to have a child with so decides to go to a fertility facility and have a child on her own. Annie has a beautiful baby girl, Madeline, by means of artificial insemination believing that the donor signed an agreement stating that he would not be a presence in her or her child's lives. Things don't always work out like we want.
Handsome and determined attorney Jake Chastaine discovers he has fathered child (in fact Annie's child) because of an unscrupulous doctor who uses Jake' sperm which Jake and his wife had hoped to use one day but sadly that day never comes as his wife is killed before the deed can be performed.
Once Jake finds Annie Hollister and has gotten a look at Madeline who happens to be the spitting image of himself he decides he wants to be a part of this child's life is every sense of word and will do anything to attain that goal even if it means a court battle.
Annie's afraid of losing Madeline and initially wants to leave town as she wants no part of Jake but she gets sick and guess who ends up taking care of Madeline, right, Jake and that's when things slowly begin to change to the normal scope. Jake has a tough time dealing with a very active 14-month-old baby who gets into everything a toddler can get into but Jake eventually gets the hang of things. When Annie is released from the hospital she realizes that it might not be so bad having Jake in Madeline's life. The story continues in the normal scope: first comes like, then love, and then marriage but getting there is no easy road for these two very different people but they do say that opposites attract. This is a wonderful novel filled with much humor and love that will leave you feeling wonderful all over. I enjoyed it Baby Oh Baby so very much and you will too.

A Pleasure to Read

Jake's wife, Racheal, has died in a car accident. Before her death, the two of them had been going to a fertilty clinic. When he finds out that his "deposit" has been used, a baby born to someone, he must find them, both...Jake goes to the home of Annie, a rancher, a tea-leaf reader, a mother, but not a wife....
At first there is antagonism between Jake and Annie. Eventually, there will be a friendship, a romance. These two characters are opposites--Jake, a "stuffed-shirt" type, and Annie, a "kook". Somehow, though, you see them working together for Madeline's sake, (Baby), and maybe, each other, too.
The cover of this book made me think comedy. Yes, there are funny moments; but, the subject is a serious one. Also, there's a sweet secondary romance, that held my interest.
One of the things I liked about this book is the origin of the title. When you read about it, you will understand what I mean. Something I didn't like was a bit of the comedy directed at the villianess. Maybe a bit too "slapstick" for me. However, this book really was a pleasure to read.

The future of microelectronics

This book consists of two parts (its not formally laid out that way, it just naturally organizes into two parts). The first part is a qualitative introduction to integrated semiconductor electronics (with emphasis on transistor junctions). The second part focuses on solid state quantum physics with emphasis on optical as well as electrical properties. There is also a smattering of material on super conducting materials and some basic material about how a digital computer works. The author's intended audience is the high school student or first-year college student who wants to pursue a degree in the sciences. An alternate audience is the informed layman who wants to be up to date at a qualitative level with recent advances in electronics and future directions in research and development.
I believe the book is well written for the intended audience. Turner has an easy-to-read style, and he manages to explain things (generally) in a technically accurate way without the use of mathematics. Without the mathematical details this book is not what you'd expect in a design reference - and that's not what it's intended for. But it is an excellent book to read in advance of a rigorous quantitative class on the subject. I think it's much easier to understand physical phenomena in mathematical detail if one first obtains a qualitative "feel" for what's going on.
Turner opens his book with two short chapters on matter and the origin of conductivity. He spends the next few chapters describing p-n junctions, how they are used to make transistors, and issues that limit their size and speed. Along the way he shows how transistors are used in computers both in the fabrication of basic logic elements, and also in the venerable "flip-flop" memory cell. His descriptions are clear and concise, making liberal use of figures and diagrams so that the concepts can be grasped with no particular pre-existing skills in physics or electronics.
The explanation of present semiconductor physics sets the stage for later discussions about the motivation for semiconductor devices at the quantum level. He does a good job of illustrating the fact that quantum-dominated semiconductor devices will not simply be miniaturized versions of the devices populating current integrated circuits. The physics would not allow it. Rather, they will be unique devices that are designed and custom tailored using quantum theory from the ground up. The result will be new devices that have similar - though often dramatically different - operating characteristics, and that are orders of magnitude smaller than present devices, as well as faster.
In illustrating the classical and quantum semiconductor circuits, Turner does a nice job of laying out the basic ideas behind these devices. In qualitative prose, he explains the exclusion principle, how it applies to fermions, and how the exclusion principle in conjunction with quantized energy states results in many of the phenomena that we observe in semiconductor devices. Turner's description of the optical properties of semiconductors flows naturally from earlier discussions. He describes the basic ideas behind a laser, though in this regard I found the descriptions somewhat lacking. Other interesting groundwork is provided in his descriptions of tunneling and Compton pairs (which are involved in super conducting).
A nice feature is the glossary of terms, along with a nice list of further reading material and a good index. The book is also well illustrated throughout, with figures that add considerably to one's level of understanding. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in a qualitative introduction to solid-state physics, electronics, or semiconductor optics. I found it enjoyable to read and rich in the sort of qualitative imagery and description that makes learning so much more enjoyable.

Great book of future technology for the Lay person!

Turton has done a wonderful job descibing the technicalities of today's computer/electronic technology. His descriptions allow the lay-person to understand the current technology and to understand where the future is taking us - probably to the Quantum Dot - and other devices. I highly reccomend it for anyone interested in the nanotechnology field as a primer

A little dry but great references

I love the fact that the author included definitions of various Scottish groups and their various beliefs. I lack the ability to give a really great review as I have no other historical books that I have read to compare to this one books.

Thank you to the author for giving additional references on great books to read about Scotland. I look forward to reading much more.
