About the Author
Scott F. Gilbert, a Senior Research Associate at Swarthmore College and the Finland Distinguished Professor at the University of Helsinki Institute of Biotechnology, teaches developmental biology, developmental genetics, and the history of biology. After receiving his B.A. from Wesleyan University, he pursued his graduate and postdoctoral research at The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Gilbert is the recipient of several awards, including the first Viktor Hamburger Award for excellence in developmental biology education, the 2004 Alexander Kowalevsky Prize for evolutionary developmental biology, honorary degrees from the Universities of Helsinki and Tartu, and the Medal of Fran�ois I from the Coll�ge de France. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists, and has been chair of the Professional Development and Education Committee of the Society for Developmental Biology. His research pursues the developmental genetic mechanisms by which the turtle forms its shell.

David Epel is the Jane and Marshall Steel Jr. Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at Stanford University s Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove CA. He did his undergraduate studies at Wayne State University and then graduate and postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Epel has been a Guggenheim Fellow, is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the California Academy of Sciences, and an Overseas Fellow of Churchill College and Life Fellow of Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge. His honors include the Cox Medal for Fostering Undergraduate Research at Stanford and the Ed Ricketts Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Marine Sciences. Epel s research focused on cell biology of development, especially the activation of the egg at fertilization, the unique physiology of the embryo and the cellular mechanisms of embryo protection. His current interest is high school science education. One area is highlighting early development of the sea urchin embryo to capture the imagination and interest of high school students. New curricula focus on the science of climate change and how students can help to solve this problem.

The Best Hitchcock Juvenile Collection

When I was a child in the 1960s I took this book out of the library several times and it seemed to cast a spell over me. The illustrations were creepy and marvelously done, and it ran chills up my spines just to look at the pictures. This was the first book in the Random House Hitchcock "juvenile" anthology collection--I put the "juvenile" in quotes because the majority of the stories in this collection weren't written for children at all, but for adults. In fact it was above my reading level at the time and I could never get through it. As an adult I've since collected all the juvenile anthologies, but this one, and Haunted Houseful are by far the best of the series. If you're an adult thinking they might be good gifts for the young people in your lives, think again. I gave copies of these to my nephew when he was a child and I don't think he even attempted to read them. The kids now-a-days don't even know who Alfred Hitchock was, nor is it likely they've watched any of the Hitchcock movies or tv shows as we baby boomers did. I think this book is great for nostaligia and just some plain old scary stories with well known authors for the most part. In fact, I can honestly say, the entire series is better and more enjoyable than Hitchcock's adult anthologies--which were mostly forgettable pulp authors.

Not just for kids...

I first discovered the Alfred Hitchcock anthologies when I was in about fourth grade. Recently I found _Ghostly Galleries_ and _Haunted Houseful_ in a bookstore, and snapped them up for my kids to read when they get older. Of course, I had to read them again for the sake of nostalgia, and I found that I still enjoyed the stories as much as when I was 10. The collections feature some of the greatest names in fiction writing. _Ghostly Galleries_ has stories by H.G. Wells ("The Truth About Pycraft"), Robert Louis Stevenson ("The Isle of Voices"), Algernon Blackwood ("The Valley of the Beasts"), F. Marion Crawford ("The Upper Berth") and Lord Dunsany ("In a Dim Room"). Less well known, but a personal favorite of mine, is Robert Arthur ("The Haunted Trailer," "The Wonderful Day" and "Obstinate Uncle Otis"). He also helped edit the book, and was responsible for those great "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" anthologies, like _Stories My Mother Never Told Me_. If you're considering this book for your kids, most of the stories have a very mild 'spook' factor, and some are more humorous than scary, like "Miss Emmeline Takes Off" by Walter Brooks. "The Upper Berth" is probably the spookiest, but a ten year-old should be able to handle it. I did. If you're considering the book for yourself, rest assured that the stories are classics in the genre of pulp fiction, that is, stories from the old Weird Tales type publications that mixed horror, mystery, sci-fi and humor. There's more emphasis on humor than horror, but you should find the reading enjoyable.

Breaking out of the rut

This is a very good book for breaking out of the rut when you find yourself totally stuck for things to photograph. While some of the images remind one of those you might take in an introduction to photography class, that's not all bad. It gets your creative juices flowing again. Book helps you break repetitive image making and promotes creative thought processes, and it's not as dull as this sounds.

severely disappointed in lack of substance

This book is virtually content free.

96 pages and most of them are pictures.

Which IMHO any average snapshooter already can do.

And if you can't this isn't the book to start with.

This book is barely an outline of a few topics concerning how to see.

The only substance, and I speak loosely, was to break the rules.

Use different angles. Look at parts instead of the big picture.

I infer that if most of your pictures are colored blue that that must be good as the author had a lot of blue pictures.

A good book on composition, and admittedly those are very rare too, would tell you more about seeing. At least then you could look for elements to put together.

This book spent a lot of its few (about 48) pages of instrution doing a second rate job on composition versus actually seeing.

Read it at the library, as you will feel cheated if you spend $20-$25 for this to buy it.

A Must if you really want to take great pictures

A friend of a friend asked me to "teach her photography". I asked her if she wanted me to teach her how to use her camera. She said yes, but she wants to learn to take photos that help her express her "artistic side". I told her that, that was difficult to teach but she can truly start the process by reading this book. It is a very straightforward book with lots of photos and explanations on how to help make truly mundane scenes, very interesting. I read it a long time ago and Kodak stopped printing it. I was so lucky to find 2-3 copies from a used book seller. Truly an awesome and inspiring book. If you ever see someone with a camera pointed toward something you don't understand, don't get or wonder "why the hell is he taking a photo of that", perhaps he/she sees something that you don't and is trying to capture it: they probably read this book and are taking great pictures. If you feel that the photos you post on FaceBook of your latest meal are mundane (seriously, no one really wants to see the sloppy mess you are about to masticate and then digest), then read this book and you will begin to notice things that you haven't before and take awesome photos. I wish Kodak could make an updated version of this

Mart�nez L�pez has been an activist-researcher in the squatting movement for more than a decade. He is one of the founders of the SqEK (Squatting Europe Kollective) network.SqEK is a network of activist-researchers which started to meet in 2009. Hugo Grotius the great Dutch international lawyer and theorist, is often portrayed as a man who, in his most famous work De June Belli ac Pacis, indulged a passion for the abstract by constructing a theoretical model of international law and international society divorced from reality. In this pioneering book, the work of a team of distinguished Japanese academics, a very different interpretation is proposed and defended. Grotius had in mind not a bookish theory, but above all a practically oriented treatise which aimed at regulating and restraining war. By scrutinizing the text and its key concepts, the authors demonstrate that this was in fact the case and that Grotius was largely successful in his aims. In this powerful and illuminating set of essays the authors also take the opportunity afforded by their study of Grotius to reflect upon the Eurocentric bias of the historiography of international law, tacitly shared even by contemporary academics.
